To expect players to have that amount of time in this industry is insane.

The percentage of playerss that last that long is infinitesimally small.

And to make matters worse, the minute amount of players that do play for ten years shouldn't need any financial help - while a running back that was tackled thousands of time in his four years in the league before being forced to retire due to injuries could truly use those benefits.

That's a bad reflection on both the owners as well as the NFLPA.
Not sure where that info is coming from. Googling it said this:
  • The Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle NFL Player Retirement Plan provides a pension to players after they retire. Players become fully vested after three years on the active roster or injured reserve. The amount of the pension is based on the number of credited seasons played and the player's average salary. The average annual pension is around $43,000, but can range from $19,800 to $201,453. Players can start receiving their full pension at age 55, but there are penalties for receiving it before then. Waiting until age 65 can significantly increase the benefit.

Former NFL players also receive access to other benefits, including:
    • A joint replacement program

    • Life insurance for players under 55

    • A prescription drug discount card

    • A Medicare supplement program

    • A neurological care program

    • Access to assisted-living facilities

    • Work/life resources, including counseling sessions, child/parent support services, and legal services

    • A monthly Medicare subsidy of up to $160 for players 65 or older who enroll in a Medicare policy

    • Two free visits with a psychiatrist
