First, my apologies if this (or something similar) has already been discussed at length.
So let's rewind to Sunday Night. The Bills with 2:17 left in the fourth quarter and three time outs are lining up for a potential game tying field goal.
My wife says "oh man, PLEEEEAAAASEEE miss it!"
To which I then to say the my group "this might sound crazy, but I actually want him to make this."
Was I rooting against the Past and for the Bills? Absolutely not! Here was my thought process.
If he misses this FG, sure the Pats get the ball back WITH THE LEAD. But they would be in a PROTECT/PLAY IT SAFE mode and likely punt after three runs. Between the timeouts and two minute warning the Bills would get the ball with probably just under 2 minutes. They likely would have the last possession to tie or even win the game.
BUT if he makes it.....well, the game is still only TIED but now the Pats have the ball in the final two minutes and looking for a game winning field goal.....and it palyed out perfectly in the manner.
Watching the NFL these days it just alwasy seems like the last team with the ball (and reasonable amount of time, like 40+ seconds) tends to win the game.
And while i have no statistical support to back this up, I just feel like in a NEED TO SCORE TO WIN scenario where the offense knows they have all four downs to work with, I just feel that offenses have a greater advantage to be successful than the defenses.
Do you guys feel this way to. Would you rather the Pats be up by 1 playing defense at the end of the game or down by 1 with the ball?
To be fair, I honestly felt this way in the Miami game as well in which I WAS DISAPPOINTED when Achane was rule out of bounds on his "touchdown run". With him scoring, I thought that gave us enough time for the Pats to get our own winning field goal. In that case the defense did come up huge and close it out.
