Which direction do you want the Pats to go at QB?

Last 3 years as a starter, Mayfield was 6-8, 2-8, and 9-8 (and a good playoff game 1-1). That "good enough to sneak into the playoffs" was with Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Trey Palmer as his WRs. If he had started on the Pats this past year with everything that was going on, I'm not sure he gets 1 or 2 more than the 4 they ended up getting.
That’s my point. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt, best case scenario. We Both agree he’s not good enough.

I swear I might be the only one here who wants to see Zap as the bridge QB for a year while they draft a QB high-ish.
I commented on this in the Wolf thread today. I could see him competing with a veteran to be the starter for a year or two while the QB sits. He fits the AVP scheme a lot better than BOB’s and he has solid toughness and leadership traits. Obviously his arm is only so-so, but it’s probably good enough. He launched a few beautiful deep balls last year, so he has enough arm.

I would be down for a Zappe AVP year, as long as there was a veteran there too that he needed to beat and to step in as needed.

I watched Mayfield a lot last year. He's a good QB, getting better, and a good leader. A good QB is going to cost you between 30-40/year. You want good players, you have to PAY good players.

Rookie QBs are a crap shoot, even highly-drafted rookies.

I very much like the idea of not HAVING to take a QB at 3. Shiny toys. Mayfield is a seasoned vet - AVP knows him well, so I'll trust his judgment on this one, certainly. if the Pats nab Mayfield in FA, I'm not losing sleep over it.

And I reject outright this notion that "he's not going to get you to a Superbowl." Purdy got there. Goff almost got there.

Draft a rookie that you need to count on and you might be looking at shiny new QB toys in three years.
The scouts are all over the place with this year's crop of QBs - I read someone trashing Maye today. The only one I hear is consensus NFL starter is Williams, and he's got other problems (and almost certainly won't be there).

This class has fool's gold written all over it, I fear.

You only get a guy like Baker if you think he can be THE GUY for you; I think he is too good/expensive for a bridge, not good enough to say he is the guy I want to pin my teams hopes on.

Both of the examples you listed, Goff and Purdy, play in the NFC. The AFC is loaded with star QB power. It’s not the same. Mayfield is not ever getting you to a Super Bowl in the AFC.

If you’re going to hunt for the Mahomes killer, he’ll be out of the league before you find him.

Will Josh Allen ever sniff a Super Bowl?

He is still young enough to be the guy if you want him to be. Lots of years left. He’s only 28. Some of these guys we are talking about drafting like Penix are 23 or 24 already.

The Brady killer was down syndrome Eli.
The Mahomes killer is not gonna be something special. A good team a tuff defense a good qb.

I’m just not on-board with signing a 20m QB that you know is not the answer. If we are saying we’re going to draft Maye/Daniels/JJ and have them sit for a season….why in the world would you not roll with Zappe? “Because he isn’t a bridge”….a bridge to what? Another high round draft pick? Which sounds great to me while the rook sits.

I don’t want to spend 20m+ per year for an 8-9 QB season while the rook learns. Is Mayfield going to bestow great knowledge to the rook? I highly doubt it. Go with Zappe or a late 30 yr old over the hill cheap vet that has been around…a lot.

Zappe should not be on this team let alone as a starting qb even for a single game

Where is the 'Other' option?

Would rather have Gardner Minshew or see if the Bengals would take Zappe and a 5th/6th for Browning.

Browning is a 28 yr old ERFA. Why would you trade Zappe AND a pick for him?

Because Browning showed he was a more capable NFL QB in his 7-8 game stint than Zappe has. Just my opinion. Trading Zappe and a 6th round pick doesn’t seem like much to me for a decent/good bridge QB. That’s just my opinion.

Also using the eye test. Watched most of the Bengals games because the had an Illini on the roster. Thought Browning was poised and did looked pretty good back there. Could be wrong

This team isn't ready for a $40M a year QB.

With a $40M QB, we would be signing a 2nsd rounder and expect to be in the SB hunt this year or next.

We're not ready.
