Finally: 5 NFL OT's

Just so everyone remembers, last year the Pats tried to get Ronnie Stanley in FA as option 1 and couldn't and we're forced to take the top rated OT in the class to fill the position as a rookie.

That same team that was 4-13 the year before went to the mother ****ing Super Bowl with that rookie LT who acquitted himself quite well before the injury despite playing next to a very green rookie playing out of position at LG.

The recentcy bias of the Super Bowl needs to be put into perspective. Maye's shoulder was ****ed, Brown should have started at LG over Wilson and given the injury, Campbell should have gotten more TE help on the edge. JMcD's game plan/ in game adjustments were pretty piss poor.
Yes, Campbell did very well at LT. That doesn't mean that he should be our LT for the next four years. Campbell is a core player io our line and will continue to be so. I don't know why folks think that Campbell has to be a LT forever to be the best value for himself and for the patriots.

I agree. If it turns out that Campbell, when healthy, can't refine his technique enough at tackle to earn and keep that job then by all means do whatever is necessary.

I just don't agree with those writing him off post injury year one before any evaluation of year two.

I wouldn't write him off, but I wouldn't anoint him either.

I think Campbell will become at least an average starting LT, if not better, for years. The Pats were seeking a top RT in this draft, and it didn't work out when Miller & Max got taken early, so they pivoted to a top LT in Lomu to be be a swing in 2026 and a RT in 2027. Not perfect but a pretty solid plan.

However, Lomu moves like a natural LT and the coaches could decide that he's a better LT than Will could ever be, and move Campbell to RT. That's also a pretty solid plan and I think very possible. If not for all the bs about arm length, that would probably fly under the radar as a common-sense move.

If Crownover were to simultaneously show monster potential at RT, I suppose Campbell could move to guard - he seems like the only one of the 3 that could play a good guard. I don't know if Crownover could show that much growth in 1 year though.

In the spirit of long term aspirations, I wonder if Moses could become a coach here eventually. I love that guy.

Using the #4 overall pick on a LG would have been a poor use of draft capital

I am pretty sure they stick with Campbell at LT unless he flat out fails like he did in SB

Keeping Campbell at LT strictly because you picked him #4 overall would be very dumb. I don't think Vrabel is a dumb guy (football wise, not personal lives wise). If no one on the roster is better then you roll with it, but if Lomu performs better, then you do what's best for the team.

After Lomu was drafted he was asked and he said he would play anywhere the Pats wanted to play him.

I don’t recall if Campbell was ever asked that. At the time he was clearly drafted to plug the gaping hole at LT.

I would hope that Campbell would also be open to playing wherever the Pats felt he could help most.

In 2011 we had Matt Light, Sebastian Vollmer, and rookies Nate Solder and Marcus Cannon at OT. We had Logan Mankins and Brian Waters at guard, and Dan Koppen at center, with Dan Connolly and Ryan Wendell for depth. We rode that OL to the SB, with a very flawed team.
You even forgot Donald Thomas at guard, a sneaky capable stater.

Man I loved that OL. Deepest we’ve ever had. Never understood why Bill never signed more vets at guard the way we did with Brian Waters that year. He was a stud.

should we start from scratch and throw them all in a bucket and see who plays best where or do we start with our foundation from last year and plug and play with wilson moving to C and plug in AVT at G. with lomu redshirting 'til needed ? i'm torn but i do like the competition.

Until training camp opens and injuries or other things happen, I see it as:
Will Campbell (LT)
Alijah Vera-Tucker (LG)
Jared Wilson (C)
Mike Onwenu (RG)
Morgan Moses (RT)
Lomu is the swing Tackle, Ben Brown is the Guard back up. Hopefully last year's draftees make a 2nd year leap, the new guys look good too.

Sounds familiar.

2011 was one of their best O-lines along with 2018. Waters was a massive addition and he played at a high level for his age.

We have the strongest, deepest, and most versatile OL that we've had since 2011. Finally.
I'm optimistic too, but let's pump the breaks on comparing the OL to that 2011 group. The 2011 OL had two pro bowlers at T and all pros at G. We have a promising rookie and two second year guys who need to make a jump.

2011 was the standard.

The OL was never that good, but still mostly solid through 2016-2017. It was allowed to deteriorate to unacceptable levels.

Now is not the time to stop investing in the line.

THIS OL has the talent to be a fair big improvement over last year's version. I will state my case in the next paragraph, but it will be 2027's OL which has the chance to be a top 5 OL than year and for a LONG-time beyond.

1. Let start with this seasons' potential group.

LT- Will Campbell - It is easy for the slow witted to take easy hot take from the shaky last image of Campbell in the Superbowl and try and engrave it as the ONLY image for the entire season and dub him a failure as a LT. The Pats may have played against some pretty bad offenses, but they DID play against some of the better defenses. Teams like Cleveland and Atlanta may have had QB issues, but their D's were rated among the best when the Pats played them. I think I read somewhere that while the offenses the Pats had to contend with rated in the bottom 3 of the league, the defense rated in the middle of the pack, like 12-15 IIRC, I can't remember exactly. So will Campbell (along with Wilson) must have played some pretty good OL to help create a top 5 passing offense for those first 13 games.

Players DO get better, especially motivated 21-year-olds who are now 22. When the OTA's start, I'm hoping to hear that Cambell's looks to be a bit bigger and plays a bit stronger when pads get put on. He will absolutely look better simply because AVT will be playing next to him as Willson's own issues only magnified Campbell's

LT is Cambell's job to LOSE. It's his job, and having Lomu taking snaps at LT shouldn't even be a talking point since HIS job will be as the swing tackle this year, so it only makes sense for him to work at both positions.

AVT LG- We are going from a young rookie playing out of position to a PROVEN all pro talent who has yet to prove he can stay on the field. But lets assume that the 3rd time is the charm and he manages to play 14+ games and is available for the playoffs. Not only will we see an obvious impact, but we will also see how HIS good play will benefit Campbell's

C- Wilson. Wilson is an uber OL athlete and is perfectly built to be a plus C. He is more athletic than Bradberry and stronger run blocker. Bradberry was a sold pass protecter but a average to subpar run blocker. Wilson has the physical ability to be better a both. It might take a half the season before he starts to reach his potential, but he won't be worse and could actually be better.

RG- Owenu had a VERY good season last year and probably was the most UNappreciated on last season's team. He is going to be on this years' team, and I hope we hear how much slimmer he looks when TC starts, but either way he will give us solid to good RG play on a very consistent basis.

RT- Morgan Moses - One of those FA surprises that made last season possible. OLmen who make it to Morgan's stage of his career do NOT "fall off cliffs". So I fully expect Moses to give us again, a solid if unspectacular effort at the RT and compete what I suspect will be a better OL than last season's which was good enough to put up some top 5 stats AND is going to be improved at their skill positions as well.

But what REALLY gets me excited about this next season is who they will have for depth for this season and what it will mean for the future.

Lomu - Will immediately improve the swing tackle position. This is another 21-year-old who will have the luxury of NOT having to be thrown immediately into the mix like Cambell and Wilson did last season. I have no doubt that his is going to get snaps every game and probably start 5 or 6 because of injuries. He was rated by several scouts as the best pass blocker in the OT class, but probably not as ready as he can be for the grind of the run game. He needs to add strength and bulk, and he likely will as he is still a boy among men currently. For him, coming to the Pats and their OL situation couldn't have been more perfect for his long-term career.

Crownover- He was the only 3rd day pick that I really liked and thought he was a steal in the 6th round. Now I look at his immediate future as a backup to Owenu this season. I know he doesn't exactly fit into the old profile of interior OLmen, but I see that profile as shifting a bit as we are seeing a lot more OT's being used as OG's recently. Or maybe I'm looking for a role for him and would like to think that what we saw from Bryant last season won't be wasted and it will be BRYANT who will be Mose's back up if both Moses and Campbell get injured.

Brown - A solid professional who has proven he can back up at both LG and C and not be a liability at either position. Another very underrated asset.

Wallace - I'm thinking the Pats will keep 10 OLmen this season. The 5 starters plus Brown, Lomu, Bryant, Crownover, and Wallace Maybe it will only be 9 and Wallace will have to beat out Bryant for a roster spot, I don't know]

The bottom line, it has been a LONG time since we have had this much talent along the OL, and all of it is YOUNG talent that should really start to peak in '27. VERY exciting stuff if you ask me.

My bold predictions:

1. Caleb Lomu will start as the swing tackle and in jumbo sets, but sometime during 2026 Lomu will take over at LT and Will Campbell will move to RT. I don't know when or why it will happen, but I think it will. I think it will be analogous to the Chargers keeping Rashawn Slater at LT, and putting #5 overall 2024 pick Joe Alt at RT. I think Lomu's superior footwork and agility are best suited at LT, and Campbell's nastiness, physicality and run blocking are better at RT.

2. I think by the time #1 happens, Dametrious Crownover will have developed into the swing tackle. Crownover and Ben Brown will give quality backup depth outside and on the interior.

3. I think Morgan Moses retires after the 2026 season, and the Pats move on from Mike Onwenu.

4. I think the Pats need one more versatile, athletic OL in 2027. I see 2 extreme longshot veteran possibilities, but around 7 top-100 candidates in the 2027 draft.

I'm hopeful that 2026 will resolve a lot of questions, and if the Pats continue to develop and invest in the OL, 2027 could be special.
