ESPN New York: Jets now the team to beat in AFC East

Re: Pats reign is finally over - ESPN

If I were Belichick I would print that article and tape it to the wall above every urinal in the locker room.

I'd tape it IN the urinals...

Remember how deliriously pumped everyone was about the Jets after they got Favre? It might happen, who knows, but it's a little early to say either way.

Favre actually KILLED the Patriots TWICE in 2008 - He led the Jets to a superb OT drive to win in Foxboro 34-31 and lost to the Dolphins with boneheaded mistakes that eliminated the Pats for good....Favre was a good reason why the Pats failed to make the playoffs in 2008 so in retrospect that Favre signing was a destroyer for us as well as for his own Jets team.

Yep, good point. Both fans and media tend to take a superficial look at the previous year's final standings and not much more. They also tend to put too much stock in recognizable names that get their hands on the ball, and not enough attention to what is going on with team's offensive and defensive lines.

Yep,A Parcells team is always a sneaky one that is a move or two away from serious playoff contention....Miami was in transition last season switching to a new QB and trying to lessen the Wildcat when teams no longer were fooled by it and that schedule was 3x harder than it was when they won the division in 08,you knew they were going to decline last season, this season I think they will make some noise.

I really think Henne is going to be a Matt Schaub or Matt Hasselbeck type of QB in the near future,I like what I saw from him as a starter.

Hate to admit it but barring some unforseen improvements by 2nd year guys we could be in for a rough year. I don't think NY will win it all but I'd have to call them favorites for the division as of now.

:explative Favre. He's cost us multiple playoff berths. I remember one season we needed him to beat Miami in an afternoon game and he got smoked by like 21. The guy always wails us.

When's the last time the Raiders or Redskins made it to a conference title game?

When was the last time the Jets made it to the AFCCG after an offseason filled with acquisitions of players with high name recognition and question marks?

The 2009 Jets and the 2010 Jets are two very different teams already. They're having a very interesting and active offseason, but let's hold off applying last year's success to this year.

The Jets won the offseason Superbowl after Favre was signed, then after Sanchez was drafted, and now this offseason too. Does this officially make the Jets a dynasty?

Have you also forgotten the SB in 1996?

The Jets have by far the best defense in this division,if not the NFL...if that is not reason to assume they will be tough to beat to win the East then I don't know what will.

The jets talked smacked all week the week they beat the pats last year...

oh yeah, the sb that favre threw a touchdown and took his helmet off and ran around the field, thus creating the "favre rule" of not being able to take off their helmet on the field.

holmes is a decent receiver, when he's on the field.

Have you forgotten Desmond Howard?

Howard was the MVP of that game but Favre had his share of the win with a good game as well

14 of 27 for 246 yards,2TDs and 0 INTs was pretty darn good

Why are 2nd year improvements by the Pats players (Butler, Chung, Edelman, etc.) unforeseen? Shouldn't some of them improve significantly with a year of experience and a full offseason knowing what they are doing in the program?

Better question...why is it assumed that the Jets 2nd year players (Sanchez, Greene) will have significant leaps in productivity this year? Sanchez had "minor" surgery and still isn't running 2 months later. His target went from full participation in the offseason program to being ready for the start of training camp.

As for Greene, you really don't know how he will react with full-time responsibilities. While it seems to be a universal opinion that he had a great rookie season, it was really a rollercoaster. He did really well against the Raiders and in the last 2 games against Indy/Cincy. Hard to evaluate using those games because he was likely running against teams not giving max effort (look at the Raider tape...they checked out early in that game). Other than that, Greene had about 60 carries for a 4 ypc clip and no TDs. In the playoffs, he did well against a terrible Cincy team and was averaging under 3.5 ypc against SD until his new teammate Cromartie escorted him to the end zone for the clinching TD. Against Indy, he didn't make much of an impact and really wasn't used much once the Jets got the lead.

I actually like Greene, but I'm not sure what to expect as his carries go from around 100 to closer to 300. He gives high effort but isn't a burner and will take a lot of hits. Expecting Greene and LdT to give you 2000 yards may be a stretch.

Sanchez is the key though. If the running game isn't as prolific in 2010, then Sanchez will need to win some games. In 18 starts, he has exactly one game with 20 completions (and lost) but 5 games with at least 2 completions to the wrong team (all losses).

The Pats have a ton of young players that could step up big this year. Around a third of their roster after the draft picks are made. If even a handful make a big leap forward, the Pats are significantly upgraded from 2009. The Jets have only 2 and they are at two of the most visible and impacting positions for them. If both of them don't make huge strides in 2010, the Jets season will almost certainly be a disappointment.

I think Tomlinson (why didn't we get him?) will have a great year behind NY's great offensive line but I just don't see them being the team to beat. Sanchez is still a big question mark.

Depending on what we do during and after the draft, I think the Pats will either have a great year or a mediocre one.

It seems to be an unforseen conclusion that a QB who showed pretty much nothing is going to evolove to a good QB this season.

I guess our rookies who actually were decent are going to evolve to instant pro bowlers than? This is too funny to read, I love the hype it's only going to set these morons up for failure.

Personally I find the Jets additions exciting, bring it on!!! The more rivalry games the better. I would much rather watch a fiercely competitive divisional game than the scrimages the Bills give us every year.

I agree, truly satisfying wins come when you are able to beat the best of the best.

May the best team win.

This whole thread is kind of ironic, I can remember last year people on here *****ed that the Patriots were still the team to beat even after the Dolphins won the division.

It all depends on how you want to look at it. You could say the Patriots are the team to beat due to them being the reigning division champs. Or you could say the Jets are the team to beat because they look better on paper, which they do in quite a few areas. More than they have in the past.
