You can have any qb come in off the street and take the pats as far as hoyer....if familiarity is significant, then so be it, but that’s all there is

And that’s the value I saw in keeping garoppolo until after the season.....if Brady got hurt, garoppolo had a decent chance of finishing the job

But then again, that’s probably the exact thing many were afraid of
Then you get nothing for garopolo.
Not trading him before the season was insurance against a brady injury.
Trading him at the deadline said the risk if a brady injury in half a season was worth getting something rather than nothing in return.

Would you be happier if he sat in the bench the whole season and walked for nothing?

do people also realize we are looking at Jimmys 6 games vs. bradys whole 17years of excellence?

Not saying he wont be a good starting QB in this league, but there are plenty of QB's out there who have done more in the NFL who havent been able to keep up their run of success.

for example: Nick foles once threw for 27TD's and 2 interceptions in a season..not sure people are calling him TB12 2.0 right now.

yeah, pretty much. I don't see how anyone cant see this. Jimmy was the highest QB picked by the patriots and obviously was the most skilled backup. Brisett didnt have the passing ability of Jimmy but he clearly belongs in this league.

People act like the patriots cant draft a QB high in the 2nd round this year with skill and develop them to be a good player in their system. as if Jimmy was it....Im sure Bill already has his eye on someone they will draft this summer.

I'll go out on a limb....I bet they are 75% sure they have a short list of who they REALLY like. The next 25% will be interviews, more film, combine, etc.

They were wasted draft picks

In terms of where they were selected and the value/production they got in return, yes.

You could argue Jimmy and Brisket kept the 2016 rolling with their play - which was very important but in terms of draft return, suspect.

But thats the draft.

Right which made the idea of keeping jimmy until after the season relatively inconsequential when it comes to the draft

Insurance is more important

See Cyrus Jones vs Jonathan jones

There were other factors accounted for which in Bill's estimation, made trading Jimmy now a better decision as opposed to chewing up $47m in cap space for two QBs and finding $40m in by cutting/re-doing current contracts just so they can tag and trade him.

If they were $100m under the cap then maybe they keep him till March or whenever

Garopolo filled exactly the role he was drafted for and got back a pick higher than the one used for him. That pick was a rousing success.

Trading Brady would have been wonderful. It would have been so fun debating for the next 20 years if Brady (the greatest f'ing QB ever) could have won 6..... hell, maybe even 7 SB's.

Now we have to watch him try to shatter all-time records. Damn, this sucks.

So you value insurance that was not needed over the 41/42 pick?
I bet you have Aflac and a lightning rod.

Yea they moved up ~20 spots.

He certainly didn't devalue.

Jimmy's cost to SF will be around 23 million per. Our second round pick will be what... around 1.1 million with 4 years guaranteed at this rate. This thought relieves my disappointment, at least a little.
