As a rough approximation, I always assume people deserve at least the honor that is one level below what they achieve are awarded.

So, since Edelman actually took quite a few snaps from Welker last season, I conclude that Edelman at least deserved to be serious competition to Welker for snaps.

Edelman had just 21 catches in 9 games.

It's a new season, though, so here's to a healthy Edelman getting a full 16 game season to show what he can do.

I agree with Deus. Edelman didn't do much last year--despite what some seem to think. That said though, he did show flashes and is obviously very talented with the ball in space.

I think he's an excellent punt returner, and is definitely able to turn some bubble screens etc into nice gainers with his YAC abilities. He does have knowledge of the system of course, so it's good to have that. The thing I appreciate about him the most I think, is his ability to take over for Danny Amendola should he go down for any length of time. I am a firm believer that our bread and butter will still be utilization of the slot and the quick timing passes, so I'd feel a lot better about having Edelman on the squad to take over that role should it come down to it.

It's pretty obvious that he lacks the proper tools to be an actual outside wide receiver, at least at this point in time; hopefully he can improve in that area because I do think that he offers some nice attributes that the team can take advantage of.

I'd certainly feel much better if he were here this year, than if he were gone.

Yeah I'd have to think that you're right, especially after losing another important cog in the machine in regards to AH.

Of course Belichick is going to say that Edelman's severly behind, and I'm sure he's right to a degree, but I don't think his job is in jeopardy either.

He still has to show that he can produce in the role of wide receiver though, especially with Belichick seeming to be fine with having some hungry rookies compete.

Edelman's role as punt returner is more important than as a WR. Amendola's production and odds of staying on the field increase if Edelman can handle those duties.

Also, the clear decision to be big and physical at WR and TE to combat big corners and even bigger safeties, makes Edelman less essential in the passing game.

Washington as Edelman as a tandem of specialists in the return game is impressive and versatile. Each can do other things on offense, and each will be valuable as "hands" players on on-sides kicks.

"He wasn't able to do much [in the offseason] and he hasn't done anything in camp, other than work individually with the [athletic] trainers and stuff. He watches and goes to meetings, but he can't participate in anything," Belichick said. "I certainly don't think it puts him ahead. He has some ground to make up. We'll see how it goes."

Maybe I'm reading too much into this but this doesn't exactly sound like a ringing endorsement of Edelman's chances to make the roster. Sounds like Bill is telling him "stay healthy or else".

The interesting part is that if BB doesn't like a player, he just doesn't say anything at all usually. One day the player is cut and it's all, "We're here to talk about the players we have."

The fact that he's actually made a point to criticize (in his own way) the status of Edelman, leads me to believe that (like Brady) he LIKES Edelman as a player on the field. He's just getting fed up with the lack of reliability.

Very unlikely. Meriweather would have made the team worse and the safety position was settled by the time the playoffs rolled around.

They probably would have beaten the Giants in the regular season, though, so that would have changed their SB opponent.

He is the senior guy this year, so it's different in regards to him having playing time. He was already seeing the field more than Wes Welker last year, so all he has to do is get back on the field and into the swing of things, and have a productive camp like he has been doing and he'll be fine. 5 years of experience in the system, and after the offense has signed Deion Branch, Brandon Lloyd, Chad Johnson and others since his amazing rookie year filling in for Wes Welker, he finally gets time to shine in the offense. I personally love the guys skill set and believe he can line up anywhere and do anything on the field, as long as he is healthy. And to me, he is far more "explosive" then Wes Welker, and better in open field and with the ball in his hands.
