Drake Questions

I do not even want him as the backup until the left side of the line is solidified.
Keep Zappe as the backup if Jacoby is injured ... feed Zappe to the wolves.
Keep 4 QBs? Or Milton gets sent to the PS with a prayer for safekeeping?

Because I think this year (as last year should have been) is, given how low the team has fallen, all about next year and years following, and not at all about maximizing wins, I hope they are very patient with him. Even if he seems at some point to be a better option than Brissett, I would remain patient, keep him safe and learning, and comfort myself with the fact the every loss boots you a little up the draft order. I will enjoy this season, that is, to the extent it offers promise for next season and seasons following. It's an adult thing, "delayed gratification."
I also think there will be many interesting things going on, even if we are losing, because new everything is in place. We get to watch Mayo and his coaches, the development of other rookies like the WRs, Drake in practice and his progression, how the new systems look, etc. I'm going into this year with a completely different mindset: this is about setting the stage for Drake and seeing how the new regime works out. I hope we lose a lot so we get that premium LT. Then we can get excited for winning.

I agree with everything but one thing, I think we are one top 5 wr or top 5 tackle from being a good team.

A top flight wr or tackle will accelerate and raise Mayes ceiling.
We almost have to trade for one of Wirfs or Higgins and Aiyuk, and I’m going to say it should be Wirfs.

You can find really good WRs in the draft but top flight tackles dont fall from the sky you know.

Top 5 WR AND top 5 LT. We only disagree on the conjunction, haha. At least he can throw the ball out of bounds if no one is open. If we have a running game, play action can get guys open, too. But yeah, having that WR1 getting open (and helping get the other WRs open because of the doubles) will really take the offense to the next level.

I'm looking forward to howe the new guys other than QB look this year, namely the WRs, the Drake can sit and learn until the team is solidified.

The bye is not until Week 14.

While I hope that I am wrong, I fully expect Jacoby Brissett to be immobilized by one too many blind side hits well before then - so yes, Drake Maye will be starting prior to the bye.
I'm going to stand on my take that Drake will be starting week one. His receivers polk&baker will have a Deon branch, David givens impact this season.

I say this because if Drake shows AVP that he's just as good if not better in camp than say Brissett. I don't see how mayo doesn't start him.

The situation is completely different than UNC. Players in the NFL are better, bigger, faster and stronger. He will have less time to throw and take more sacks. His value to UNC and his value to the Pats are not even in the same solar system. He's gone from UNC after a few years, but for the Pats he's the franchise for 12-15 years, if he pans out. Elite QBs are rare in the NFL. Even good QBs aren't drafted very often.

Finally, he's a young QB learning the NFL game. Do you really want to put him under that kind of duress, knowing that it could hamper his development, instill bad habits, ruin his confidence, and, in the worst case, cause a major injury? Why? So you can see him play? What's the value proposition? He's 21 years old. There's time. The Pats are likely going to suck this year, with or without him. TB12 didn't start until age 24. Let the kid develop and keep him safe until the line is solid.
Yes I do want him starting , because I believe he’s that special a player, I believe, based on analyzing every play he’s made, and comparing it to other QB prospects he’s at an all time prospect level and is more advanced than any first year QB since Luck and plenty QB’s have played for bad teams and had good rookie seasons. I want to see him play because with him they have a chance to make the playoffs in year one. Yes I actually believe that because Maye is that good IMO.

I get that consensus opinion doesn’t have the same opinion I have for Maye.
I felt this way before the patriots drafted him. I mentioned several times I would send 3 number one picks to make sure I got Maye. He needs way less work than people think.

I did the research on the QB’s and when I do research I’m pretty obsessive about every detail and do it without bias so I’m completely confident in my view but I completely understand why others don’t have the same view.
The fun thing is when he does play we’ll see pretty quickly whether I’m right or not.

I'd keep 4 QB's. Start Brissett, and if he gets injured, play Zappe. I wouldn't play Maye this season and keep Milton as a #2 of the future (if they put him on the PS, they'll loose him).

It is awesome to see someone feel this, regardless of if you agree.

Respectfully disagree and Mayo already said we are cutting down to 3 QBs.
My guess once Milton and Maye show comfort they are shipping Zappe for a late round pick or a jag depth player.

Cutting Rourke was interesting any word how he’s doing?

Their will be the possibility that the Patriots Oline and WR’s are better then what UNC had last year…so the difference may be star systems apart..but we shall see.

Keep 4.

Send the 3rd and 4th QBs to the practice squad. No one is signing Zappe or Milton... If either is signed away, so be it. No big deal. Milton is not going to play anyways. Just like with Cunningham, you won't even notice he's gone.

Mayo also said they were going to burn some cash. I would take any pronouncement by him before the season with a large grain of salt.

I agree no matter how bad it is at QB, Drake should sit assuming his still raw.

I think the hardest part of picking your franchise QB is getting the right person-character/ leader/demeanor/temperment
He'll start before the bye for sure, only 4 games left after the bye that would just be stupid and a waste of development time.
I'm going with week 5 because it is at home, Miami's defense is not world beaters. He can still CJ Stroud them to the playoffs at that point.
After a month of sitting for regular season games he's not going to develop much sitting on the sidelines. He has to play to develop.

The reality is the kid is special, he should start day 1 without a doubt, but think they won't do it because they've been told they shouldn't and don't want to be criticized if they do it and does not go well.

Maye will see way less pressure, no matter how bad the LT is, than he saw this year in NC. He'll think he's died and gone to QB heaven with the Pats line. He'll be wondering why there is only a free rusher every 6th dropback, instead of every 3.

The Lamar feud is a different Drake. Easy to confuse the 2 though. Ironically the Wikipedia photo of Drake (rapper) looks a lot like Caleb Williams. Hmmm, what does it mean?
Brady and Mahomes both sat a season and were ready to go for year 2. Sit him until the line is strong, then let him go from there.

I previously posted the analysis on sitting a QB or not and how it concluded sitting a QB has zero benefit and top 10 drafted QB's on bad teams do better starting year 1. So historically and statistically Maye should start.

We have no idea how Mahomes or Brady would have done year 1. Brady was a 6th round pick behind Bledsoe (with a huge new contract) so made no sense to start him.
KC was a playoff team with Alex Smith. I contend if they played Mahomes year 1 they might have won that years Super Bowl and they blew it by not playing him. That extra playoff experience might have made Mahomes better and he beats the Pats in the OT game the next year, so KC might have 2 more Super Bowls if they had played him year 1.

You can sit and play and be good, you can play right away and be good, you can be bad and get better etc. but you have to go with the odds, the odds say top 10 QB's should play 1st year, especially on bad teams.
Get the most out of the rookie contract and you do that by developing the QB which has proven to be done fastest by playing the QB.

I'm good with Zappe going. Prefer that Maye not play this season, and they keep Milton to develop him. I understand that Rourke is on another team (Giants). I don't know how he's doing, but at present, he's on the Giants.

It's interesting you mention Luck, because his is the cautionary tale the Patriots should take to heart. He was absolutely slaughtered in his first year, taking a lot of big hits. Brady was also sacked a lot early on, but I don't recall him taking many big hits like Luck. There were a lot of "no one's open, time to turtle" sacks. Luck was a special talent, gone in 6 years. I realize it wasn't only the sacks.
