Drake Maye WEEI Interview 10/21 (He sounds more like a leader than Mayo)

Keep in mind his age. My son is just a couple years older and he sometimes says some head scratching stuff. This kid says all the right things, he can articulate his thoughts and seems to possess wisdom beyond his years. He has the physical and mental talent to be elite he just needs to be developed/refined by good coaches and the sky is the limit with him.

He is very sharp on the field too. He processes his reads remarkably fast. I rewatch a play and can see him going through a full field progression as fast as a seasoned vet. That’s impressive. Just needs to get those mechanics refined down that little bit more and get a better feel for the NFL game.

I heard Bedard say he cleaned up most of his issues he had in his first start against Jags showing he is a fast learner too.

Again, I had concerns about starting him too quickly could lead to him developing bad habits. The fact that he is showing observable improvement week to week is a very positive sign and relives a lot of my fears of a bad team ruining a young QB.

You know who is soft as a babies arse?

Mayo said that its OK for his players to get on social media, but that he wishes that they would keep team problems in house.

You do not wish or ask anything. You tell the players flat out how it is. Allowing the players on social media will amount to nothing but problems.

What’s the limit if he’s left to grow without being developed/refined by any good coaches?

Meanwhile who is talking to the press using the bully pulpit for throwing his team under the bus?

Lead by example!

One play that stood out came on a first down in the second half. Instead of looking panicked when the Jags came after him and forced him to his left and he was on the verge of being sacked, Maye alertly flipped the ball at the ground in JaMycal Hasty’s direction for an incompletion.

Instead of being a sack, he avoided the negative play, and the commentators even noted that it was unusual for a rookie to be that smart in that situation. This kid is really good and, unlike Jones, doesn't look like a deer in headlights when he's under pressure. That was among several moments that stood out, but that was actually a veteran move and one he made in just his second NFL start.

Kids got 5TDs in 2 games.. he's the lone bright spot in a gloomy season... as every one is ****ting on Mayo I have to give him credit for Developing Drake to have him at this point when he was expected to sit, and not even play this season.

Absolutely agree! I tip my hat the the HC for allowing his coaches to develop Drake since was drafted here. Where everything has fell apart Drake is the lone reason to tune in the rest of the season..I'd say he's good for at least 2 TDs a game. That's impressive for a rookie. So glad we have Drake.

I mean Brady would have won at least 8 if it weren't for Bill. I know this because there is small but very vocal minority on this board that makes sure to repeat this over and over again in thread after thread. Therefore they have convinced me that coaching doesn't matter and thus we have nothing to worry about.

Very articulate, quick answers, gets to the point, no bs, avoids digging a hole for himself, and projects a can-do attitude. I can see why teammates really like him, and I agree that I wish Mayo was more like him in interviews.

The facial expressions while he's listening to the questions are hilarious. I mentioned it in the thing that I wrote, but he talks like Brady but looks like Gronk when he's listening to reporters ask him something. It's pretty funny.

That's a great question and all I can do is guess. I still think he gets to his ceiling because of the type of competitor that he is showing us so far. I am seeing his improvement thus far in a less than ideal situation for a rookie qb and he showed similar at UNC. I just think his progress will be slower if he has to figure things out on his own or seeking outside coaching in the offseason. Regardless of how he gets there I think he will be in the top third of QBs. Can he be an elite top 5 QB...just have to wait and see but so far I don't see a reason to say he cannot.
