D'Qwell Jackson

From what I have read some consider him a liability against the run but a plus at generating pressure not sure if he'd be a good fit or not.

I would love the Pats to sign him, but I don't see it happening because he will want too much and want to be in a place where he is guaranteed to start.

That is my concern as well, Rob.

I'm not so sure that would be my analysis, but then again--I'm no expert.

I have always assumed that D'Qwell Jackson has been an excellent tackler, and a decent enough coverage LB as well. He's a former 2nd round pick who had 115 tackles in a season (with 41 assists), and 95 in another (with 59 assists).

Denver also has a lot of big shoes to fill and a ton of important free agents.

Decker
Moreno
Rogers-Cromartie
Both of their centers (Koppen is a free agent)
Quinten Jammer
Sean Phillips
Zane Beadles
Robert Ayers
Wesley Woodyard

They're arguably in worse shape than we are ....

I would have to move on from Bailey for that kind of potential savings. It seems silly not to strongly consider it.

I think I would probably side with you a bit more than 50 yd line though, as it seems that DEN isn't in anything of a "bad" situation, depending on specific opinion. I think he makes a nice point that we could potentially be in better shape with some moves down the road. I think it's a tough call either way, but I also think that DEN will be strong contenders for some of these key players, as Elway has stated that they'll be quite competitive in free agency.

As far as Welker goes, we've heard coach Fox and Elway both say that he's definitely staying. We'll have to see if they were lying or not.

well, that means the Denver locker room is gonna be pretty gassy with the corned beef(Manning) and cabbage(Welker) offense for another season.

If I'm Elway, I'd have a hard time changing too much up on that offense while I still had Peyton Manning around. It seems as though they are already expecting Decker to walk (and I'd let him too), so I think it makes sense to keep Welker another year myself.

141 tackles 1.5 sacks 7 pass def and a INT, he is not going to sign for pennies IMO his out of the pats price range the guy has had better number then Patrick Willis and Jerod Mayo over the last 3 years someone will give him a nice contract

Of course. The thing that has to be recognized, however, is the brain trauma Welker suffered THIS season, the noticeable degradation of his speech and cognitive processes and the spectre of more brain trauma THIS coming season as Manning hangs him out to dry every game. With Decker adios, Manning will be throwing even more short passes to Welker than last season leading to even more smashing, crunching hits from LB's and safeties.

I'll make a standing bet with anybody on this board that Welker doesn't make it through the season. Make it a donation to the Jimmy Fund or whatever charity deemed worthy.

Referring to the bolded section, less than two weeks away from unrestricted free agency, the New England Patriots have yet to cut a roster player, let alone renegotiate one contract.

And something like 28 other teams are in the same boat. Most things don't happen until after the combine. Notice within a day or 2 of the combine ending we see major action? It's the first time teams get to spend major time with agents since the season ended.

As the poster above me noted, there haven't really been many moves at all to this point around the NFL. Even the 2 teams who are over the cap (DAL, PIT) haven't attempted to do anything to this point.

Hopefully, we will see something in the next 10 days, and I'd imagine that we may.

This is what D'Qwell Jackson has said he wants from his new team:

“I'm willing to go to 31 other teams at this point,'' Jackson told the Northeast Ohio Media Group. "Obviously I'm looking for a place that has some type of stability, some place that a guy that's been around and you know he's not going to be out in two years. I don't have a crystal ball or anything but ideally that's going to probably have a lot of weight in determining my decision in where I go.''

We can certainly provide him with stability.

And FWIW, BB calls him one of the best coverage linebackers in the league

Prior to playing Cleveland last year, Belichick called Jackson "one of the best pass coverage linebackers in the league."

You see D'Qwell Jackson back there, sometimes 20 yards deep in coverage, tipping a ball or being in the passing lane and forcing the quarter to throw it down," Belichick said.

Any move that frees up Collins to attack the QB gets my vote.

he will not be in the pats price range, especially from a value standpoint....

Yeah, really. We have 66 players under contract. Denver's best D-Back, best WR and beast TE end their rookie deals next year. Their other best D-back, O tackle, both centers, two starting LBs, and second best WR are FA now. And if they cut Bailey, they need to replace him, too.

The Pats have a lot of room to maneuver with Wilfork, Sopoaga, and Connolly, and easy restructures in Gost and McCourty, and restructure/cuts with Kelly and Gregory and Wilson. Heck, Mankins has already hinted that he'd talk about a restructure, though I hope they wait until next year.

Looking at the top line number and saying how much someone is under the cap is like looking at Cooper's deal and saying he's $5/year against the cap.

The Pats are in good shape - they'd be in GREAT shape is if wasn't for Lucifer.

The more I think about it, the more I want us the sign Jackson. This D could really use "one of the best coverage linebackers in the league".

This D could really just stand for their linebackers to get more athletic as a whole. More leadfoots like Hightower and Spikes on third down are not what they need. That's easy pickings. Jackson, Mayo, and Collins would be a nice trio on third downs. Insert Hightower on obvious running situations or let him try his hand at DE.

Jackson has quite a few visits set up with teams that have a clear need for a starting LB. That would seem to indicate that he shouldn't have much trouble getting paid like a solid starting LB, in which case he should be out of the Pats' price range.

I get that people love the idea of adding a coverage LB, but I don't think Belichick is about to go replace both thumpers with two coverage guys in one offseason. And I know having three coverage guys in subpackages sounds great, but Belichick's defenses have typically used 4-2-5 subpackages. There aren't three linebackers there.

To me, Jackson just seems like an worse version of Mayo, and I'm not seeing why so many people want to get both of those guys on the field together. Depth is great, but not at a starter price tag.

I like this idea I think with Spikes leaving depth at LB is definitely a need. Fletcher is OK depth but there is room for D'Qwell and he would IMO be higher on the depth chart than Fletcher. I think we all expect Mayo, Collins, and Hightower to be the starters. We need at least 2 capable back ups and a third who likely will be more of a STer.

I would really like to add a guy like Jackson. He is reputed to be good in coverage, and we need more players like that. There's a reason the Pats aren't talking to Spikes in the offseason, great player, but he's a LIABILITY in coverage. If the money is right, I absolutely would like to see a coverage type linebacker such as Jackson signed for the Pats.
