Money is dictated by the market. Besides, the issue is total resources and value: cap money AND draft picks. In the past, Belichick has chosen to spend more free agent resources on some positions (LB) and more draft resources on others (DL).
The patriots have always spent a lot of resources on linebacker. McGinist, Vrabel, Thomas, Mayo and Phifer all say hi.
BOTTOM LINE
We already spending relatively less money on the line with Seymour gone and one more high-priced lineman going next year.
In the past few years, we have spent a lot of top draft choices on the secondary.
