The NFL is more and more giving me NBA free agency vibs where athletes just don't want to play in certain areas. Like Boston for instance since it is cold and not a party town. However with the hard cap it will never be as bad. The problem is when it comes to the absolute top end players who can get paid at any number of locations... it seems like it is hard for the Pats to get them unless they excessively over pay.

Even then at what point does the money stop mattering to these guys. If the Pats offer Ronnie Stanley 28M/year (making him the highest paid tackle in the NFL and some other very good team offers him 25.... does that extra 3M a year factor in that much to him when he gets a choice between chilling in Miami or in Boston for the next 5 years?
Exactly! If you were Stanley would you rather play for KC at 25 or Pats at 28
Choice is obvious

$28m in MA is taxed 5% but everything over $1m is taxed at 9% so it's close to $25m anyways.

Lie.

I use to work with someone who on occasion was in the same social circle as a very famous Red Sox player back in the 2002-2008 time period.

When asked about Boston women, the player's response was, "Too cold up here. They wear too may clothes."
There's a reason the term 'Boston 6' exists.

I'm not excited, but he's a good player that will get paid WAY MORE than he should.

Nobody on this board should complain if the Pats were to give up a 2nd round pick for Metcalf or another premier WR. The Pats have been historically dreadful drafting WR's and yet we're worried about draft capital?
