Defense steps up today

The Patriots didn't give up every 3rd down today. No NFL defense should. So improvement? Yes. Improvement to the caliber where this team shows any signs that the D will be good enough to contend for a Super Bowl at the end of the year? No way.

This Jets offense had no business scoring as many points and gaining as many yards as they did today. The Patriots did not force a turnover, which even Jacksonville's abysmal defense did.

The defense was fully responsible for 14 points today. The special teams takes most of the blame on one of them.

News Flash: YPG is the is the one defensive stat that matters the least.

I'm not saying the D has been good all year because it has not, but I look at PPG and turnovers before YPG.

Will be interesting to see how the defense plays against a QB with his back literally to the wall in Romo

Romo has been hounded the past 2 weeks on whether he is good enough to continue as the Cowboys QB into the future.

We will see a determined Romo out to prove the critics wrong....can't wait for this matchup.

The Jets had 144 yards total offense when the 4th quarter began.

San Diego had 127 yards with 2:55 left in the first quarter when they played the Pats three weeks ago.

Absolutely, but in big games you have to be able to hold them to a FG and stop momentum even after big plays.

I am not negative, just calling it like I see it. This thread and board are sometimes way too positive about this team. This defense will not win more than 1 game in the playoffs against quality teams. Even when Mayo was healthy, the linebacker corps have been below average, particularly at taking away the quick slant and open field tackling. The secondary can't cover an intermediate throw to save it's life, which was exposed again today at least 3 times.

Just saying. Have a good night, gentlemen.

The Defense played one of their two best games for the season and was instrumental in keeping the Jets Offense grounded.

Whilst it's easy to throw stones today's performance deserves recognition as it was an improvement on three past efforts, even for yardage alone.

Look, nobody should be saying the D is perfect right now. Heaven knows there are lots of issues to be worked on.

But the question is—are they playing better than they were a few weeks ago? Absolutely. As somebody pointed out, they had as many 3-and-outs as they've had in the first four games combined. That's improvement, and a fairly noticeable one at that. So long as they build from this going forward, they'll be OK.

Hell, if you take away Joe McKnight and his returns this game I think the Jets only score 10 points.

Two big returns, set up two of the Jets TDs. If you forced that offense to drive down the field a long way for the TD, I don't see them getting those 2 TDs.

The lack of pressure is still EXTREMELY discouraging. But the defense played very well today.

I'd be happier if it was against a real qb, that was mark snachez out there, a back up on most nfl teams.

Agreed, it was great to see Haynesworth on the field....however the double team constantly neutralized him and neither Ellis or Carter made any particular headway on their single coverage when next to 92

Carter didn't do anything!!! What game were you watching? He was in the backfield all day, something like 7 tackle. I would call that making some significant headway!

The defense did its job, but the Jets have a **** offense with only one legitimate playermaker. Playing well against them is a good start, but not a cause for celebration.

These threads on the defense is pointless.

Until patsfans.com can come to grips that an opponent might

Gain yardage
Earn first downs
Horror- actually score some points

Evaluation will be futile.

It's amazing that the defense can go into Oakland and give up 13 points with a minute to go and generate such yakking while the "vaunted" Jets defense gets lit up for 34.

You can stop fronting now and actually admit that you liked what you saw today more than what you saw in Oakland or Buffalo.

Today the defense was good. They played one game today, not 5. How well or poorly they played in the first 4 games has nothing to do with evaluating how they played today. They played well.

Looks like the team is rallying around the loss of Mayo . . .

The players have been telling us for a couple weeks now that once the defense is healthy and they've had an opportunity to gel as a unit, they're going to be dangerous. I'm cautiously optimistic that they just might be right.

1) We have a solid run defense.
2) We will have little trouble against a QB that can't challenge the safeties.
3) We don't have a free safety.
4) Ihedigbo won't be starting at safety against Romo, or we'll have problems.
5) That being said, Ihedigbo did well. He was as effective as Brown or Barrett. That's a low bar, but Ihedigbo is a STer and nto expected to have major reps at safety.

I have no fundamental problem with either effort.

The Patriots had two sacks and even more pressures in this game. The pocket was constantly collapsing on Sanchez. The intermediate throws might, unfortunately, be a problem all season because of the safety position. But improvements were certainly made today. I also liked how much Haynesworth stepped up his playing time today.
Not only the lackluster safety play--the Jets safeties play a lot more effectively, and I'm not just saying that because Eric Smith is a State product--but the slowness of Spikes in covering ground during pass plays.

Guyton is a tremendous player in covering ground, but Spikes is a downhill thumper for the running game. He's a liability for a QB who can better exploit it, and the Jets did a little.

With both Haynesworth and Wolfork in in the second half the Jets running game halted. But I can't believe how out of shape Haynesworth is. He had those muscle cramps when he had hardly played. I give him credit, though, he came back.

We desperately need the Invincible Wolfork to have more rest. I was happy to see he had at least a few plays off in the second half.

And Carter is a notch above Tully. Anderson is a pass rushing specialist.

Why didn't Fletcher play? He seems a better pass defender than Spikes but a better run defender than Guyton?

We've improved for sure. The run D is solid. I wonder how Mark Anderson would look if he started a game as opposed to Ellis. However, part of the success was also due to Sanchez not going through his reads. Many times, LT was open in the flat but Sanchez was looking the wrong way. Also, we need to defend better on crossing routes. Spikes might be a great run stopper but he can't cover himself with a blanket.
