Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions

Interesting that you say that. The game plan is always created with the QB's skill set in mind.

As for that ridiculous 3rd and 13 conversion - that was actually a check down to the RB. There's no way you can blame play calling on that one. Guyton got no depth on his drop. He gave him a push and the just ignored him for whatever reason. And the other 7 guys dropped too far and weren't able to tackle him. That's poor execution and not poor play calling.

QUOTE]

On the first, do you mean the Pats spent the last 2 years collecting cornerbacks who cannot cover unless they play 10-15 yards off the line of scrimmage?

On the second, the 3rd and 13, it was a bad play call. The Pats called a timeout so they could come with no pressure. That let Sanchez go through his reads while standing there calmly and then hit the RB in stride. Guyton may well have just stayed in his zone and the RB may have just done a good job of finding the soft spot underneath. Either way it was too easy for Sanchez. Any zone has a soft spot and given time, just about any QB can find it.

Well, if it was a bad play call it was certainly on BB since he's the guy who called the TO to review the coverage...

+1 to FIRING PEES.

Crennel rocked. Remember when we moved around, were creative, confused people?

Now we're boring, unimaginative, predictable.

FIRE PEEEEEZZ.

Tremendous insight there.

I do remember. I also remember the veteran talent we had then. Law, Milloy/Harrison, Poole, Bruschi, Johnson, Vrable, Willie/Rosie, Seymour, Warren, Traylor/Wilfork. I watched most of it get injured and/or age out.

For the last two seasons the cry has been we got to get younger and faster. Some of you don't seem to realize that's a process.

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

The Jests were 3/11 on 3rd down conversions.
The Jests were forced to kick FGs on 2/3 redzone opportunities.
The Jests managed 254 yards of total offense.
The Jests scored 16 points.
All at their place, with the fanbase whipped into a frenzy and thinking it was their Superbowl.

Think about it. Are you really going to stand on your soapbox and call for someone's head with stats like these starting you in the face?

Now if you were ranting about the Special Teams I could understand it. Or even the Offense. But ranting on the defense after this game? Makes very little sense.

Great post. I posted the gameday stats a couple of days ago, which spoke for themselves. We lost because an offence, which is having some understandable problems clicking, missed a lot of chances to convert redzone chances. We lost by SEVEN POINTS.

They don't speak for themselves. (previously posted): Would these numbers make you satisfied w/ the defense?

Sanchez: 14-22 294 yds 2 touchdowns 26 points

Time of Possession - Jets: 36:02 Pats: 23:58

Total Offense - Jets: 398 yds

These numbers are false and are just shown to illustrate that when the Jets decided to unleash Sanchez, the defense responded with a terrible half of football...We were sitting there at the half proud of the defensive effort and hoping that the offense would get untracked in the second half then the defense was below average (putting it nicely) in the second half:

Sanchez: 3-5 15yds 3 points (1st half)

Sanchez: 11-17 147yds 1 touchdown 13 points (2nd half)

Time of Possession - Jets: 11:09 Pats: 18:41 (1st half)

Time of Possession - Jets: 18:01 Pats: 12:09 (2nd half)

Total Offense - Pats: 197 Jets: 55 (1st half)

Total Offense - Pats: 102 Jets: 199 (2nd half)

These numbers are false and are just shown to illustrate that when the Jets decided to unleash Sanchez, the defense responded with a terrible half of football...We were sitting there at the half proud of the defensive effort and hoping that the offense would get untracked in the second half then the defense was fairly average (at best) in the second half:

Sanchez: 3-5 15yds 3 points (1st half)

Sanchez: 11-17 147yds 1 touchdown 13 points (2nd half)

yes i agree that they keep the handcuffs on Sanchez

until the 2nd half but even whit that said

13 points when the O keeps going 3 and out

is not to bad there is no more all pro player's on this D

its a D that with out mayo only has 2 first round picks on it

the rest are all 4th and 7th round picks and undrafted FA

did we think they would be the 2000 ravens over night

and the D is still playing good a nuff to win games

the O only needs to put up 20 to 25 points a game to win

and last year with a high school QB who is not half as good as brady on bradys worst day put up 26 points a game

so even if the D dose not get any better they will still win a lot more games then they will loose

This isn't a defense full of rookies. The D-line are veterans, at linebacker Tully and Thomas are veterans, at D-back Bodden is a veteran, Sanders and Merriweather are 2+years.

I agree that the talent is as much a problem as the play calling. The old defensive stars made plays all the time. They laid hits and jumped routes and chased the QB around all day. Most of these players don't do that.

It remains to be seen weather or not this defense ever approaches the status of those teams. Not to take away from the legacy of Belichick, the defenses of those teams wouldn't be great without Bruschi, Rodney, Willie, Vrabel imposing their will on the games.

For the Patriots defense to become great again, they need a couple more players who can impose their will on the game and make big plays. I think Mayo, Wilfork and Meriweather have that ability, I haven't seen it out of anyone else yet.

That's my take on that play, too. Guyton got no drop whatsoever, while the RB floated about 7 yards behind him. In fact, Guyton just stood behind the DL and did absolutely nothing - he didn't rush the QB, he didn't cover anybody, and he wasn't even covering a short area because he was too ****ing close to the fatbodies. An absolutely horrible piece of LBing.

What really blows my mind is that this was eerily similar to the 3rd/15 during OT last year. Have these guys not learned anything from their past ****ups?

captain, how do u know guyton wasnt in a qb spy? but yes i agree pees should blitz more but that third down alot of teams would have thrown a rb slip screen so its an iffy call if he would have chosen to blitz there
