Darius Butler with #23?

I really don't know much about either player, but from the Combine Numbers at nfl.com:

20-yard shuttle:

Darius Butler: 4.19
Connor Barwin: 4.18

3-cone:

Darius Butler: 6.92
Connor Barwin: 6.87

Butler weighed 183, Barwin was 256
Now you've done it.

FWIW last night on "Path to the Draft" they said several NFL scouts said Butler's pro day was the best CB workout they'd seen in years.

Wouldn't surprise me, he looked head and shoulders better than any other CB in the Combine drills.

I'll go out on a limb and say Butler will go ahead of Vontae Davis.

I saw that, too. It's now quite possible that Butler is gone before #23.

That's what I was saying a week ago! The kid is rising up the boards. If we can get him at #23 I'd be thrilled.

Did we really just riff for 44 posts that an unnamed scout for an unnamed team wouldn't be surprised if the Patriots considered drafting Butler at #23 based solely on Belichick's presence in Storrs for their Pro Day?

The fever's burning hot and spreading fast this year.

I've got an intuition about a hankering regarding this idea that conceptually thinking Butler might just possibly be one of the alternatives that we could conditionally be considering at 23. But it's just a thought.

That's a mighty bold statement.

Mike Mayock had this to offer from Peter King's CNNSI column:

Matthew Stafford, Brandon Pettigrew, more on 2009 NFL draft - Peter King - SI.com

10. If you need a cornerback in this draft, sit it out. There are no corners even well above average, never mind great.

Doesn't sound like he's particularly on the Butler bandwagon.

And he must be calling Jenkins a safety. Jenkins might have been the top CB off the board last year, in what is acknowledged as a very good corner draft (Cason, Flowers, Wheatley, McKelvin, DRC, Lowery, Jenkins, Porter, etc)

I think the reason they were saying that is that he has ball skills, he can track, leap and snatch a ball. He was UConn's best receiver, which isn't saying much really, but anytime a CB can do that, it means he has some skills. And that's what he showed at the combine. He looked better than a lot of WRs snatching those balls.

Reiss just reported that the Patriots could go TE with their first pick and might target Brandon Pettigrew.

And dryheat44 is reporting that they could go QB and target Josh Freeman.

OH noez! I don't even have him on my board! Quick, who has a draft profile? :help:

If we hadn't signed Chris Baker, Pettigrew would have been very high on my list (as a predictive choice, not my preference). He fits. A good football player. Projectable. A position Belichick likes. And a need with Watson a disappointment and an upcoming FA plus Thomas struggling to make an impact.

The need is somewhat lessened now but with the no better than above average Baker to go with Thomas and Watson, Pettigrew could easily fit.

He wouldn't be my choice but I think we'd all better be ready for the possibility.

Problem is, Pettigrew is not the least bit special. He's the consensus top TE this season, but I doubt he would have been as highly thought-of in any of the last four drafts. So why draft him if there's no TE need this year? I can see if there's a guy with a special skill set (such as Jared Cook), which BB recognized in Ben Watson. But we appear to be set at TE this year, and next year will probably be a better TE class. Heck, Gresham by himself makes it a better TE class in 2010. I think it's possible in the sense that all things are possible, but unless Belichick sees All-Pro potential in Pettigrew, I just can't see it.

I think you guys will be saved by Philly who I think will take him.

I don't think he has to be considered "special". For example I don't think Warren was considered special but we took him quite early. Belichick likes his TE and Pettigrew , while not special, would be attractive to Belichick at #23 IMO because he's above average across the board except for his 40 time. I'm not saying we'd trade up to get him but he's comparable to Graham coming out, Belichick has drafted two TE #1, as you know, and wanted Kyle Brady back in Cleveland at #9 overall. Watson and Thomas are both FA after this year and neither is exactly kicking butt.

Would I take Pettigrew at #23 ? Almost certainly not. Would I trade up for him ? Absolutely not. But while I expect him to be gone, I think he would be strongly considered at #23 if he were there.

I think even the consideration of him, or any other offensive player at #23 or #34, says a lot about our lack of any serious 'needs.' We are in a lot better shape right now then a lot of people realize, I think.

I think Belicheck came away impresses with - OLB/E- Julius Williams. Don't be surprised if he takes Williams in round4-5 area. Tall,Angular, pass rusher with good speed.
