From Dan Pompei:

Bill Belichick makes every other coach in the league look bad if they can't do loaves and fishes. Considering he may be the best coach of all time, he could win the Coach of the Year award almost every year.

We're starting to take Bill Belichick for granted. | SportsonEarth.com : Dan Pompei Article

Pompei argues that BB has set the bar so ridiculously high that it numbs everyone to how brilliant a job he does:

What's funny is he might not be voted Coach of the Year because, since 2001, Belichick is expected to paint the Sistine Chapel every time he takes out his palette. "Bill has set the standard so high with his past performances that he is at a disadvantage with the way he is perceived," said NBC information man Scott Pioli, once Belichick's general manager. "What he has done this year has been absolutely remarkable, but people almost expect it from him."

Just like everyone yawns when the Pats put up 10+ wins and make the playoffs every year, even if it takes wire and duct tape.

EVery word of this is absolutely true. He could win every single year and it is totally taken for granted. Or perhaps not taken for granted by most, but severely resented.

He's brilliant, he's the best all-time, it isn't close and all others can shove it.

It really goes to show how most things are a popularity contest. What Belichick has achieved is what every coach strives for. As long as he maintains this level of success he should win every year by default. Handing it off to the most recent rah-rah guy that lucked into a turnaround season doesn't make sense when you have such an obvious choice.

That really is the criteria for a lot of the CoY picks, isn't it. A rah-rah guy that lucks out into a turnaround season. It's so true.

Pompei stole it, someone on NFLN threw this out about 3 weeks ago. It is obviously not going to happen while he is coaching and if it does there will most likely be opposition to it from Herr Goodell . He certainly would deserve it because he has been setting the standard but I think his run would probably have to go for a few more years with another SB to really put it over the top.

Either way, I am sure it would be well received in Pitt and Baltimore, and oakland, and Miami, and NY, and Buffalo....................................

...as demonstrated by much of the discussion that takes place on this forum.

'He can take His'n and beat your'n, than he can take your'n and beat your'n'.... Bum Philips

Now old Bum never said that about BB, but if it applies to anyone it applies to him. Who else could get such flawed teams to the playoffs and Super Bowl year after year? Some years he has a great offense but suspect defense, other years he had a passing game with no running game etc. And if you notice how many players that leave this team have success with other teams... almost none. Why, imo because in many cases they weren't that talented, but BB and his staff got the best out of them. He knew what their strengths and weakness are/were and put those players in the right position to win. The problem is (if i may call it that) this team is always picking near the bottom of the draft which makes it harder to get talented players.

I think that will be a fitting tribute for BB when he finally retires. Just name the damn COTY award after him. He will end up with the most regular season wins by a coach and the most wins in the postseason when it is all said and done. And I'm hoping he'll win at least 5 or 6 Superbowl titles for us.

We all know that there's no way he's going to win COY every year. That's just not how human nature works. Him not winning the award in a given year is nice talk show fodder, but it's not some slap in the face. He's won the award 3 times in his Patriots tenure, and he was voted the coach of the decade for the 2000s. He's an all-time great, up there with Brown and Lombardi.
