They showed on the broadcast (at least early), both McCourty and Arrington were bumping receivers off the line of scrimmage. Collinsworth pointed it out and they showed highlighted tape of both sides doing that. Maybe they did it less and less as the game went along.

I don't get where Law is saying this because at least at times the Pats were playing press coverage. Towards the end they got soft and went into a deep shell.

Hafta admit its mind blowingly strange statements like this that make me very skeptical of most stuff from ex-players and I like Ty.

This is exactly what I saw too.

Rob is probably correct when saying that they may have started doing it less and less and the game wore on.

However, I certainly do not agree with Law that they were playing "prevent" the whole game.

Both of them had off games. The secondary couldn't stop the Baltimore arial attack to save it's life. In essence, they were left out to dry by the front seven's inability to get pressure. How much of that was due to how much they were held is up for debate.

they barely called holding in the game last night, and there were plenty of times they could have. i guess these refs just dont look for it at all.

i will admit, while almost every penalty seems to be overcalled now...though holding seems to be missed alot, even when its blatant.

but then...the refs also missed cary williams punching edelman...so...meh.

This is two years in a row. We all know that PFF is a joke when they rank McCourty as the second worst CB in the NFL last season. There is NO WAY any other CB could have been worse that McCourty last season !

Sadly, it is more of the same this year. I'd much rather see Dowling get a chance. Hard to see how it could be any worse.

Who cares what PFF ranks anyone. Their data collection and stats are a joke.

But whatever their rankings last season means nothing to this season. Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees were arguably the best two QBs in the league last season. Through three games, they are closer to middle of the pack than elite. In fact, Rodgers is 16th in QB rating and Brees is 25th.

Why does everyone rate PFF and their weird stat scheme? I think they're terrible...I paid for one year and never went back. Some of their contributors really know their stuff, but the ratings I could care less about.

Secondly, Tom Curran knows jack. Arrington has been hot and cold so far but McCourty hasn't been bad at all until Sunday.

Is it any confidence that pretty much our whole secondary had a rough day when our D Line had ZERO sacks and ZERO QB hits?

On top of that, McCourty had four pass break ups. He had a couple of bad plays but so did the whole secondary...and I'd put my bets on the D Line play having a hell of a lot do do with it.

Tom Curran is one of the worst mediots going.

1. If the game plan was to contain Ray Rice, then the mission was a miserable failure.

2. Baltimore's O-Line only looked that good because they were raping our DE's the majority of the time.

The defense didn't stop a thing in the Ravens game - run or pass. I do know that they left at least three interceptions out there - two by McCourty and the slip by Arrington. If they pick off those three passes, the Patriots blow the Ravens out.

As far as hand-to-hand combat, we're back to the officials again. They called 24 penalties in that game - 14 against the Ravens. The game was a brawl and by the time they started throwing flags the animosity was out of control. Mankins was insane out there. Both teams got in their licks. If the big boy refs had been there it would have been a different show altogether.

Like I said earlier in this thread, it was funny how the defense DID play lights out the first three drives in the first quarter, but it all turned to mush after the 3rd down phantom PI call on Jerod Mayo.

McCourty sucked the whole entire game and he's sucked for the most part of the other games before this one. I keep seeing these post where some are saying he played well except for a few plays, but I keep asking, when and where was he playing well? I'm gonna guess he supposedly played well when Flacco chose to toss the ball elsewhere hoping for a PI call.

I am on the fence about the DMcC situation.

I don't think he played too poorly up until Sunday, but he certainly can be better. Hopefully this isn't a step in the wrong direction again.

Those who are saying that he didn't play too poorly vs BAL are referring to his 4 pass breakups.

I don't think he lacks confidence. I think he lacks skills some of the time.

As bad as our secondary was the other night and was last year, you are right. What are the alternatives?

We saw how bad the secondary was last year but the only change is Gregory and even he wasn't a starter before coming here.

A few things that need to be done are

1) get pressure on the QB. If you can't get it with just the front 4 then bring more.
2) if Arrington or McCourty continue to struggle, then swtich things up. Try McCourty at FS and lets see what we have in Dennard or Dowling. At the end of the day performance should indicate who plays.

Troy Brown sat there and basically agreed with everything Ty said too.

I thought it sounded a little too strange but I also thought that Ty is not one to question. I'm still baffled.

He may have thought that the mix of press versus 'prevent' was way too weighted in favor of the latter. It's OK to say that Ty. Really, if that's what happened then it's very OK to say it and then follow up with your personal feelings about it.

Yeah, I certainly don't mean to sound argumentative or nit-picky in my disagreement, but there were certainly some things that they did do right at the same time, and if Law/Brown are going to use an overgeneralization like that then they should be taken with a grain of salt too.

At the same time I would certainly be the first to point out that I am by no means anywhere near an 'expert,' at anything, and would usually defer to their football smarts and experience in breaking things down.

In this case it was probably just a poor case of wording or simply using an overgeneralized way of describing things.

Eugene Wilson started in Game 2 of the 2003 NFL Season as a rookie and never looked back.

If you don't like Dowling, start Moore at right cornerback instead.
