Crap, McDaniels May be Raider Top Choice Now

Isn't it true that the Raiders haven't even been able to speak with McDaniels yet? I still wonder if this is just conjecture to some extent. Isn't Josh basically just a few years removed from being a coaching assistant? I like him but what makes him such a highly regarded candidate. Nothing he's done makes me think he's all of sudden gonna be a great head coach. Not yet at least. I really think the Raiders are reaching with this one. And it's starting to get embarrassing that no one wants the job.
it is true .they cant talk to him or anybody on a team thats still active.

I don't see McDaniels taking this job. He is considered a star on the rise among NFL circles and the Raider's job is the worst head coaching job in NFL if not all of professional sports. Here's why:
  • You got an owner who is in charge of personnel and seems to has lost touch with reality.
  • He has a lot of players asking for a trade (Moss and Porter), but Al Davis is very likely to let them rot on the team rather than trade them.
  • McDaniels would have no control over selecting his assistants.
  • Davis is very impatient and could fire McDaniels after a year or two. The Raiders has had three Head Coaches in the last five years and who ever takes this job will be the fourth in six years.

The Jets' job when Mangini took it had a lot of negatives, but he knew that Tanenbaum was likely to take over the GM job within a year and the owner would give him time to turn around the team.

Where has that been said?

New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is another rising star in the Belichick ranks, a John Carroll grad whispering offensive thoughts into the great Brady's ear. Brady and McDaniels are building the kind of relationship you hope a quarterback and coach build, the kind Brady's had only with Charlie Weis since entering the league in 2000.

Josh McDaniels, offensive coordinator/quarterback coach for the New England Patriots. McDaniels is another one of those young coaches Belichick puts under his wing and develops. He came to the Patriots at 25 years of age, and after the departure of Charlie Weis to Notre Dame, he quickly became Belichick's guy on offense much like Eric Mangini did on defense when Romeo Crennel left for the Browns. McDaniels also coaches the quarterbacks and would have to be considered on the fast track in NFL circles. Coaching Tom Brady isn't hard, but helping with an offense that passed on the opportunity to re-sign its top two receivers is a challenge. New England is the first team to sweep a division opponent this season, and sooner rather than later we are going to start hearing about a 30-year-old coach up in Foxborough who grew up in Canton, Ohio.

McDaniels' lack of overall NFL experience is probably hurting him, but how many years coaching did Mangini have before he got the Jets' gig? McDaniels did an exceptional job last year helping Tom Brady throw for a league-leading 4,110 passing yards. This year, despite losing some of his receivers, the Pats offense continues to find ways to get it done. In Brady's first two seasons with McDaniels helping him, the star QB had his top two passer ratings of his career.

This was said about Mangini and the Jets a year ago.
Not by me. Besides, this isn't Mangini we're talking about, and this is certainly not the Jests we're talking about. This is Al Davis.
Where has that been said?
In many places. People really started to take JMcD seriously once they heard of your disapproval.

Edit: and bravo Rob0729.

One of the worst jobs in pro sports. Josh would be dumb to take it. In this case, there is some value in being patient. He is no where near as old as Romeo or Weis. Much better opportunities would come along later.

Isn't this what we said about Mangini last year? A bad organization, rebuilding etc..

But the Jets were not nearly the disaster that is the Raiduz right now. It would be a daunting challenge for a young relatively inexperienced guy like Josh.

If Josh produces with the Pats for a couple of more years, he'll get another chance for a HC position. There are openings every year. No worries about that. Right now, though, he'd be a child walking into the lion's den bare-handed at Oakland.

I cannot imagine anyone wanting to take the Raider job. If I remember correctly, Al Davis had this same problem trying to find a head coach last year. I think he turned to Art Shell because no one else wanted the job.

If a guy like Jon Gruden -- whose personality seems made to order for that organization -- cannot get along with Davis, it must really be a hell-hole. Like working under Steinbrenner but without all the money. Major bummer.

Isnt it amazing how many of these so called experts can be fooled, and duped?

Charlie got accolades too...but never got hired as a HC in the NFl.

Josh, IMO, doesnt even come close to Charlie Weis as far as football knowledge and instructional capability.

Your view is so clouded about Josh, as it was for Charlie, that you need to step back and take a long look at what has happened this year. McDaniels has been fine in his role, and under the guidance of BB this team has put up a lot of points.. they have used their running backs as needed, now that we are in the final two games of the tournament.. they are healthy and ready to go. Our passing O has been fine, much better towards the end of the season. Whether or not he goes to the Raiders, which I doubt, McDaniels will be a very good coach someday.. needs more seasoning. Not sure who you would like as an O coord, aside from Grogan.. but whoever we have, they will always be wanted by another team because of our team's success.

And Mangini turned down the Raiders OC job a year earlier.

I had forgotten about that, thanks for the reminder.

Mangini was willing to go to the Jets, but correctly recognized the Raiders job as horrible.

Here's hoping Josh sees the light as well.
