Suppose the DBs are:

CB
McCourty
Dowling
Arrington
Moore

S
Chung
Gregory
Wilson
Barrett
Allen

Ebner to the PS. Ditto Dennard if he makes it through. Ventrone again if one of those doesn't.

Could that be enough? Arguments for No include:

  • Just about everybody on that list is a clear risk for injury, non-performance, or both. (Arrington may be the solitary exception, although of course everybody can get hurt.)
  • There are sets with 6 DBs. So it would be nice to have 8 active for game days; 7 is pretty much the minimum.
Still, I have trouble thinking of another DB to put on the roster who would be as good as many of the others cut at other positions to open up his spot.

Dennard won't make it to the PS. He'll either be on the roster, on IR if his injury continues, or some other team will pick him up. He would never have fallen to the 7th round if his off-field incident hadn't come a few days before the draft. Teams over-reacted.

I don't consider Barrett a given by any means.

4 CBs just seems too little. Especially considering the number of plays the D will be in sub defense. or is Earthwind Moreland still in shape to come in and play/shadow roster .

Given the number of sub packages I don't see any way we keep just 9 DB. Especially given the injury history with DB's on this team.

Yeah this is very possible, Barrett is on all 4 ST units so he could stick. Allso the day I was at camp he was the 1st string punt gunner (along with Slater).

If healthy I think they keep Dennard, doubt they could get him to the IR or PS.

Certainly, these 9 could be enough. List Allen and Moore as CB/S and the analysis is easier to take. I would note that have Edelman and Slater as the emergency active defensive backs in case of 2 injuries. 7 active, not including Edelman and Slater, seems to be enough.

The 25th defensive roster spot could be a DL, LB/ST, or DB as is always the case.

What's the weird fascination with Barrett on this forum?

I agree. Either he starts out on the 53 or he's unavailable this season (if ever).

Good point on Edelman being another extreme emergency option.

As for the year-in, year-out bad luck with injuries, making it necessary to bring in street FAs -- you can only protect against that by keeping guys who are, in fact, better than street FAs. Who, other than the ones I listed, meets that criterion?

Given the recent injury history at the position, I don't think this team's going into the season with just four CBs.

Don't be dense now.

Almost everyone keep Dennard as a developmental DB or expecting contribution this year.

I don't think it unreasonable to keep a developmental player.

top gunner (along with Slater)
top special teamer
starting 2011 safety until he was injured

This is enough for me think that he is a reasonable choice as the #4 safety.

I guess the real question is: will these 9 DBs suffice?

So, call Allen a CB.

Fencer's proposal includes Allen, who presumably is good enough to be our 5th CB as well as our 5th safety.

I can call him a zoobersnuiut, but it's not going to change the fact that Allen's been playing safety.

Not to mention the fact that BB went out of his way to STEAL him from Denver, when they tried to slip him through waivers to the IR in preseason!!! Mcdaniels connection also.

Ill say Dennard makes the roster since Barrett will be on IR before the season starts, anyways.

And FWIW, I'll go on record to say we'll be kicking ourselves if we let Dennard go.

I'm sure there will be multiple cuts we feel that way about. We have that kind of depth again.

But here's the thing- what are the odds we'd be kicking ourselves by letting Josh Barrett or Will Allen go??
