Cooks traded to Rams for 23 overall pick

Are we really much worse off with edelman, Mitchell, and Patterson
Haven't seen much "retooling". That implies they've added quality pieces to replace guys who are gone

They're much worse at WR.

I'm really late to this thread and I sure as hell not going to read all 19 pages of a thread focusing on a freakin' WR. But I do have as many worthless opinions and speculation as the next guy. So here are my 2 cents:

1. I was among the few that really appreciated what Cooks brought to the Pats, both as a productive receiver, an important decoy to open up others, and a hard working unselfish player that epitomized the Patriot way. That being said he was just a WR, and his impact on THIS particular offense was never going to be worth paying him like a #1 WR at today's market value for that kind of player. I always figured he was a 2-year rental at about $5MM/yr and gone after this season.

2. So like so many, I think this trade was a really good value. I also believe that, while the WR position could still be upgraded, I'd be happy going into the season with that group and a much stronger defense.

3. I think @DaBruinz made the best post that I read in the 4 or 5 pages I skimmed. In case you forget, be detailed all the loses the Pats suffered on defense over the course of last season and wisely reminded people that regardless of the defensive players we may draft, the 2018 version of the Pats defense should be much better (on paper) simply because of who is coming back,

4. The addition of the 23rd pick isn't some kind of earthshaking event that will somehow change the direction of the franchise like it would if it had been a t0p 5 pick. What it DOES do is give the Pats much more flexibility to do what BB does best in his great drafts and that's getting more shots in his sweet zone, which is in the 20-50 range. It allows him to take chances and not have to take the "safe pick" For example:

We don't need a safety to be an impact player this season, but this trade will allow Bill to pick one of the top guys anyway because his current top 3 guys are all reaching their dotage, so to speak. It's a luxury pick that he didn't have before.

Similarly, he doesn't need a high-end TE either for THIS year, but now if they like that kid from ND, they have the luxury of grabbing him

5. This also allows Bill to move down with any of his top picks see what he can pick up if he likes the depth of this draft. Again, lots of flexibility.

6. If I were CPatterson, I'd be calling Brady and Edelman on a daily basis finding out when the 2 will be working together. The more I think about it, Patterson really could be the key guy here. He has a rare size/speed talent. He doesn't have to be as productive as Cooks to be effective IF he is productive enough to open up the field for others.

7. I'm intrigued by PDorsett. I dismiss his lack of production last year when his snaps were limited by the fact his skills were redundant to Cook's abilities, and Cooks was doing a good job. As with Patterson, I'd like to see him take the initiative an do the extra work to FINALLY make the leap from first-round bust to a productive starter.

So what it boils down to is that you have 2 WR's on the team who have first-round talent, and we only have to hit on one of them to make this offseason a huge home run.

8. The Rams will be a really interesting team to watch this season if only because they are giving us a classic lab study of team building. They are certainly adding talent, but are they building a team that can win in the marathon that is an NFL season, and even if they can, will they be able to sustain it.

9. I think the thing that surprised me the most about this trade was how universally it was applauded by a fandom that usually idolizes WR talent. Could it be that people are FINALLY coming to understand the true value of the WR position in the great scheme of total team building??????

I'm not going through all 19 pages so if this has been said I apologise. But, while I see the value in this deal and get why it was done last year and this year; I am kind of sad we never got to see the Cooks/Edelman/Gronk/Hogan/Lewis offense on the field.

Thank you! I get the need but the OT class is crap. Don’t reach and let better players slip down.

No. The OT class isn't crap. It just isn't especially deep. There are 3 legitimate 1st round LTs that have been talked about, though people grade them out to be Good to Very good talent. Just not top 5 worthy. The rest have a lot of questions.

Agreed wait and see. It seems like Dorsett can learn most of the limited route tree that Cooks ran and add some toughness, all at a lot less $$s? If true, that is the value option which is usually the best choice with the salary cap.

Yeah, I look at this trade and I see more than one possible reason for it:
  1. Unknown problems with player (Edit: reported "problem": inability to agree on extension terms)
  2. Simple disappointment with the results the player produced
  3. Need for that 1st round pick to make a move BB considers crucial
  4. Trade just considered too good to pass up
  5. Team confidence in the rest of the receiving corps
  6. Other shoe going to drop

Since I can't really rule any of those out at this point (though #1 seems unlikely given what's come out over the course of recent months), I'll wait for more info.

I don't know about better or worse off but, with regards to your question, I think it's fair to say:

  1. Edelman's an unknown at this point, even if he looks great at this point in his rehab
  2. Mitchell's crystal knee seems as if it could end his career at any moment
  3. With Cooks gone, Dorsett is the only wide receiver on the team that has a similar set of wheels and style
  4. Patterson's a gadget player who's got his work cut out for him if he's to be a quality WR in the Patriots system

don't you?

So we have
Edelman (off torn ACL)
Mitchell (looked good rook year but needs to prove himself still)
Dorsett (done nothing in 3 years)
Patterson(good special teamer, been a bust of a receiver)
Britt (maybe could be decent?)
Gronk (superstar)
Allen (awful season)

Missing anyone? Gotta think BB has some ideas in mind, because this could be a 2013 type of struggle if things really go poorly. Losing Dola hurts a lot more down Cooks. Really need another reliable pair of hands.

Wes wasn't "Wes" in 2010. JE has a 4 month head start on rehab. I'm hopeful but your kids are in their early 20s . JE is in his 30s.

Patterson will catch 25-35 balls. Nothing more.

Agree on Patterson. Wes wasn't *WES*, but he was still damned good. 86 receptions for 848 yards (9.9 avg) and 7 touchdowns. One of the best slot receivers in the game coming off a torn ACL. At age 29. Edelman is 30.

My kids were 17 and 20, respectively, when they tore their ACLs. So yes bodies bounce back quicker. But they're also not world-class athletes with world-class medical care. And it's not their full-time job to tend to their bodies. I'd be shocked if Edelman isn't EDELMAN in 2018.

Is Randy Moss coming through that door?

Ya you're missing a guy that had 130 yards and 1 TD in the SB. Chris Hogan, a guy that has proven he's good in this offense

Didn’t Moss get top money?

Entirely different situation. Moss was on the back end of his career when the Pats got him.

on the other hand, your kids also weren't competing against world-class competition, so it probably didn't matter so much if they weren't 100%.
.

Cue the fake news media report that Pats r making offer for the jackazz wr w dyed blonde hair for the nyg

Very interesting trade.

I’ll miss cooks because of his speed and he kept defenses from choking our offense with a single high safety.

But I remember that cooks does not run a complete route tree and is not a great yac guy.

Bottom line is bb will trade a guy a year early rather than a year late. I think bb redeemed himself after getting fleeced by John Lynch in the jimmy trade.

Edelman, Hogan, Mitchell, Britt, Patterson and Dorsett. There's been worse WR crops in NE.

Also while Patterson hasn't been much at WR that's with Minnesota and their terrible QB play and the Raiders which Del Rio and his staff aren't what anyone would call great.

Cooks got knocked for his run after catch, well Patterson is basically a run after catch guy. I guarantee McDaniels will try to get him the ball on some short passes and screens 5-6 times a game and probably a couple more on handoffs just to get the ball in his hands and let him run with it. So why Patterson isn't some #1 Elite guy he maybe a useful player to the offense.
