Cooks traded to Rams for 23 overall pick

Wow, I love this trade! I absolutely loathed the red zone concepts this team used with Cooks as their focal point, despite his obvious value to stretch the field in other scenarios. After the Miami game where Gronkowski was suspended, it became obvious that Cooks is a very good luxury to have but absolutely not a game changing player who you can build an offense around, and you'd need to value him like that if you are willing to meet the WR market. I asked myself this several times last year after seeing both of them present and absent: overall, is healthy Brandin Cooks really that much more valuable than healthy Chris Hogan? The answer was probably yes, but not by a margin of roughly $12M annually.

I can't believe the Patriots are getting #23 for him. That is an absolute robbery, considering his value HAS TO BE less than it was last year when he had a lower likely extension value and had two years, not one year, remaining. In addition, if both the Saints AND Patriots have decided this guy is not worth the long-term investment, why bite? The Rams are clearly all-in on building a team to win immediately, no matter the cost. Overall, though, the NFL is insanely overpaying the WR position, or just insanely overpaying veterans at the cost of of team depth...I mean, if Sammy Watkins got that type of money, Cooks will likely get more. This is where the Patriots edge over many teams is most apparent: basic supply and demand economics.

One scenario I can envision: QB X is the top rated QB in BB's board and he is available in the teens. BB will trade up. Don't think he would give up too much, so I don't see him going all the way into the top 10

I don't care about draft prospects, so I won't speculate... Still, it's an unlikely scenario. I'd be thrilled if we get a Wombo-Combo TE and OL or LB and DL with our first picks

The value is very good and I like it provided we fill holes in the receiving group. Only reliable receivers left are a 32 (?) year old Edelman and Hogan, both with a long history of injury problems.

Who knows if Mitchell will ever return to form and become a bigger contributor. The rest of the guys are JAGs. Let's not have another 2013 passing game.

per 98.5

Also exchanged a 4th for a 6th
Like this trade. Patriots need to get younger and more athletic. This gives them 4 picks in the top 60+. Would like to see them use all 4 and draft LT and then LB, safety, edge rusher.

Dorsett is a fringe roster player. Its 50/50 he makes the team
Our WR room needed to get younger, he'll make the team or someone better will. WR's are plentiful in the draft, every year they make up the largest group in the draft. Dorsett made the playoff roster last season, he already made the team.

I think anything is at play here.
Knowing BB he will do the unsexy thing and draft O line and D line with a mid round QB.

I feel like many are blithely underrating a 1000 yard reciever. I don’t get it
He is a very good WR in this league. But WR is the most replaceable position in the NFL, production-wise. His catches and yards can be distributed by all the rest, because Brady

I love the idea of calling the Browns and Vikings about their bust wideouts.

It'll be someone better

Mcglinchey at 23 isn’t a reach. it’s a great pick

Highly unlikely he’s even there at 23. So leaves us with what Conor Williams or Kolten Miller? Imo there’s better players on the defensive side available here. We would need a wilfork type miracle slide to see McGlinchey.

so... picks 23 and 30... and 2nd rounder at 63, they could move up to a top ten and get one of those QB's.

In theory.

Dorsett can do what Cooks does for substantially less money, guys like Riley McCarron can make the team now.

Our GM is wicked smart...
You are kidding...right? Dorsett is a bust, Cooks is a 1000 yard receiver (multiple times).

It's a little sad that people are still holding out hope that Phil will be a significant contributor, if he even makes the team.

Not sure I love the trade as much as some people, liked Cooks but figured he'd be gone next year. Good to see us finally gets a first rounder in return.

Was wondering wasn't Tavon Austin supposed to be a free agent? He's kinda Cooks-esque.

Nah, Cookos was a great addition. But the WR market is insane - do you think they would have/should have kept Cooks after this year for 14-16m+? because that's what it would take.

The Mosses, Johnsons of the world would be worth that. There aren't many of those. Cooks was not one of those - a guy you can throw to any time and likely get a catch.
