Brissett is now paid more than Tom Brady and more than Andrew Luck was scheduled to make.

The story is that this an “early franchise tag,” except that $20M is guaranteed, so if he flops (or say, goes 4-12 again), the Colts are now chained to this contract and likely can’t be in the QB market until at least 2021. Meanwhile, it underscores that the franchise tag would have in fact been an option if this was the route they wanted to go at the time. In other words, there is zero reason to take this risk. Seems that Ballard has finally come around to seeing things the Colt way.

If he actually is good and leads them into the playoffs well with double digit wins, then they can live with that.

If he’s only adequate and leads them to 8-8ville, then it’s basically the Tyrod Taylor era of the Bills again. That’s the worst and most likely outcome.

Th issue is you already have the franchise tag or ability to extend in-season. Now you’re stuck with a $20-30M commitment for a guy who has never in his life shown he worth close to that kind of money. I could understand if they extended for a year for around $15M. Both team and player give some and receive some in that situation. This is like buying a Honda for $60,000 and hoping that’ll make if perform like a BMW, or bragging to everyone that you own a $60,000 car that’s worth a drive in, even though it’s actually priced at half that.
