DRAFT Cole Strange-Welcome to the Pats

Hey, one thing that has worked out well for BB & Co. is they regard the mentality/character as highly as physical traits. Which means we don't have a lot of guys flaming out early because of stupid life decisions (Hernandez aside). Strange appears to be another very solid human with good ethics and potential captain material by the time Andrews leaves.
Oh the mass murderer aside.

Haynesworth, Winslow, Floyd, AB... there are plenty of other counterexamples to what you're saying.

Everyone makes mistakes, but it really is the most honest info on what other teams thought of the pick. Not necessarily the player but the pick. And it was both McVay and the Rams GM. It was a very real response. Not the calculated sort of I don’t want to offend a fellow coach response. It shows that it’s not just draftniks and ESPN hosts who thought it was a huge reach. Contrast that with rumors or maybes that some other team might have drafter him before 54.
BB had OL as priority # 1 and the Pats were on the clock. Mcvay has no clue if Strange would last 100 picks.

Jones was under a lot of pressure last season. Stands to reason that in year # 2 he will be running for his life.

I just heard on the radio that the Bucs and Titans had first round grades on Strange. The Bucs are the first selection today.
Seriously? Rumors on the radio to buttress the Pats reach. And the Bucs have a legitimate need at L guard and could’ve drafted him at 27 if they really thought he he was a first round talent.

Anyone remember the outrage over the Cowboys drafting Fredrick and Martin? Both picks were highly criticized.
I thought Martin was considered by most a solid selection and the cowboys were praised since they avoided taking the splashy pick in Manziel.

Indefensible for where they picked him. Just once couldn't they trade up to get the guy they wanted? Lions traded up from 32 to 12 to get Jameson Williams.
The Lions have had so many great seasons too

I completely agree with you except that I don’t think Mankins was a reach in 2005. If I remember correctly, I think he was considered a top 50 player
Nope. Mankins was considered at late 2nd/early 3rd by many of the draft mags but Draft Scout had him Rising.

Kiper also state that he had a top 50 grade on Strange.

So people can compare Mankins measurables to Strange's.

Even if it is true, it’s still a bad pick
Ok. Why? If you remove the “they could have taken him at 54” argument, tell us why taking a high upside player at a clear position of need is a bad pick.

Given the weakness at D- line, speed at linebacker and the lack of quality cornerbacks. It’s concerning that was the number 1 priority especially at a position that is routinely filled in the middle rounds

Who said it? The source matters.

They weren’t taking a ****ing guard at 33

Just because they are your favorite team doesn’t mean that you have any clue whom the Bucs were, or are, drafting at 33. None. Zero.
Isn’t Deus going to be angry that his gimp is spending time a Patriots-centric thread? You best hurry back to the Tompa-Gronka 2022 thread, before he really gets upset.

Well, the Pats were winning after an eternal drought...this message board back then wasn't toxic. This message board wasn't Felgerized until the end of 2019, other than a couple of non-stop complainers.
Everything you said is true. But the reactions were pretty much the same. People saying that the Patriots need to hire a GM.. That the Pats reached for Mankins. That BB the GM is hurting BB the coach. yada, yada, yada.

I remember it vividly because when the news broke about the 49ers having wanted Mankins at 33, all the naysayers either went Silent or kinda tried to back-pedal. It was very very few who admitted to being wrong about their take on Mankins.

This is next level homerism. We passed on several 1st round graded players and reached for an OG so we could make other teams burn picks?!?

Another troubling aspect of this pick is Belichick on record saying Strange "wouldn't have lasted much longer" ...what a complete lack of awareness. Bill, your pick is being publicly laughed at by your peers.
Graded by whom? You? Kiper? Mcshay?

Wrong about what? He could be a Pro-Bowler and it still was not a good deal to trade Mason + 1st for Strange + 6th
That wasn’t a trade, you just made that up.

So 29 is too early, but he may have been taken by someone else in the 30's. Sounds like 29 wasn't too early.

Apparently on this forum it's only "too early" if Mel Kiper says so...

Karras was who I was talking about. The Mason move I didnt love but I understood why they did it. Karras was cheaper and apparently good enough to hold off Onwenu all year. Bill made him an offer then allegedly dropped it by $2 mill and Karras ended up signing in Cincy for more than either offer Bill made. I think Bill made a miscalculation and this pick was his correction.
There’s a big gap between Shaq Mason and Thuney quality versus Karras… who was serviceable but wasn’t Pro Bowl quality. Strange has that kind of upside, he’ll cost about 3 million per against the cap for the next 5 years. That’s a win assuming he works out.

That's an explanation I'm open too.

But here we are with Gordon and Booth still available, likely to go in the next 10 picks, and then who?

There's a massive drop off.

We'll be looking at the guards too, like Rhyan and Kinnard.
Is there really a "massive drop-off" from Gordon/Booth to Woolen, Jones, etc?

I remember these talking points when Jordan Richards was drafted. What a stud he was.

The next jersey i will order is from COLE fore sure. ooooops and f.uck the RAMS and of course their coach. THX

Plays the position with an uncoachable edge. Loves to somersault defenders.” Rams reported to have liked Strange and would have taken him at #104, a compensation pick at the end of Round 3.
