Celtics 2024-2025 Discussion

I like Donovan Mitchell but those obvious attempts to get a flagrant foul by rolling on the floor in agony were a bit much.

Good game.
But stupid foul by JT on Mitchell with 14 secs left and up 5.
Why would you even attempt a steal in that situation?
Looked to me that JT was pissed off bout sumpin and lost his cool.
He's usually more level headed than that.
But he coulda cost us the game
I am happy to see Tatum get pissed off and to lose his cool. I really like passionate Tatum.

Yeah I've always liked Mitchell's game but that was over the top.
But not as bad as Niangs ridiculous flop
which the refs of course weren't buying as JT nails a 3. Tatum looked disgusted by Niangs flop too.
And Niang had a good game

Me too. Just like I loved pissed off Tom Brady. But there's a time and a place for that. Can't blow your call on that situation and potentially give your team a loss.
Especially after playing a very good game to that point

Cavs are a really good team. Barring major injuries, I expect it will be these two teams in the ECF. Cavs were missing some good players tonight too.

Mitchell is a great shot creator / scorer. Beyond that, he doesn’t do much but they’ve surrounded him with all the right players. Allen and Mobley are more concerning to me than Mitchell and Garland.

Agreed they are. Though I think if we have KP we can get some more comfortable wins against the Cavs. Queta was a -20 at one point while Al was like +17/18 or something.

One role player being exposed on the floor turned a 15-20 point win into a 3 point win.

Yeah that’s one way to look at it.

Garland went 3/21, Cs shot scorching 53% on 3s, and only won by 3 points.

What the hell happened to Tillman? He’s the kind of big body grinder needed against that Cleveland duo. Porzingis would help defensively but it’s power guys like Allen that cause the most problems. 6’9” and not some Gumby big, likes to bang around in the paint, but he’s quick too.

Is Kornet still injured? Queta was so bad I couldn't understand why Joe didn't put him and/or Tillman in. Mobley was just killing us

The referees couldn't decide what was a foul in this game so maybe JT figured he could get away with it? Brown was fouled 4 or 5 times on drives to the hoop. On one of them, they called it and overturned it on review, even though it was obvious that Mitchell had a hand on Brown's side, pushing him away from the hoop.

There was an offensive foul called on Queta where the defensive player had a foot in the restricted area, which is supposed to make it an automatic foul on the defender.

Edit to add that the refereeing in the 3rd quarter was especially atrocious on the re-watch. The foul called on Holiday with about 4:30 left was bogus. The offensive foul on Tatum was BS, as the defender was clearly leaning into his path to the hoop. Mobley shoved Tatum 8 feet away on an offensive rebound with no call. Just over & over, the refs did everything in their power to let the Cavs get back into the game. Jaylen Brown couldn't buy a foul on his drives. Just horribly inconsistent refereeing all around. Even the Cavs were *****ing about it.

Agree about the bad officiating BUT ....
..that has NOTHING to do the fact that JT made a bone headed play that could've cost the C's a win.
You're up 5 with 14 secs left, Mitchell was almost trapped and would've had to force a bad shot in another 3 secs or so. C's rebound, game over. Thered be about 10 secs left and Cavs have to foul. Make even one ft it's over.
Even if Mitchell made the shot- it had to be 2pointer given his location at the time-
There'd still have to foul and only 5 or 6 secs left. Plus Cavs were out of timeouts and would have to go the full length of the court, probably down 4, so game over anyway, but even if Cs miss 1 ft, lead is 3 with 5 secs left and Cavs have to go the full court. Given how good Cs perimeter D is it would pretty much impossible for them to hit a 3.
JT knows this, he just lost his cool.
He's gotta be better than that.
Dude had a great game but it still could've cost the C's the game.
You don't attempt anything defensively that possibly result in a foul to stop the clock. The clock is your friend.
You play defense with your feet, not your hands.

The broadcasters had a great point last night about the NBA stats leaders. It really should be about total points, assists, steals, etc and not about a per game average. Might as well do a points/minute if you’re going to do PPG. No other major statistical leaders uses this metric. Soccer’s leader in goals / game? Football’s best QB in yards / game? The HR/game baseball leader? No one even thinks about this.

Kind of encourages the superstar players to sit out a bunch of games with no repercussions. We’ve seen the extreme case with Embiid.

I’ll take it a step further: Jokic is a more valuable player, but if Tatum plays in 5 more games, I’d say MVP is wash. If it’s 10+ more games, I’d definitely award it to Tatum. Availability matters. In that scenario, Jokic is providing zero value for all those missed games.

I disagree. I am glad JT lost his cool. I wish he did it more often. JT needs to express a killer instinct like MJ, Bird, and Kobe. More passion and aggression from JT is OK with me. I do not care about one game.

Did you catch the play in the 4th quarter where Tatum took a 3 and got smacked in the face with no call? I still think that hard foul on Mitchell was an "FU" to the refs. Watch the replay of that uncalled foul. Tatum didn't even say anything to the refs after that, which was very unusual for him.

A player can't say anything about the refereeing or they get fined and probably even worse treatment the next time those refs do a game so you have very few avenues to state your dissatisfaction with their ****ty calls. I wonder if, after that hard foul, Tatum said to the refs, "Now that's a foul".

Except when MJ,Bird and Kobe were pissed off, they didn't attempt stupid plays that could lose a game.
They were all about winning.
What JT attempted on that one play was the opposite of "killer instinct".
Killer instinct is staying laser- focused on one thing- winning.
Let's not blow it out of proportion though- Tatum plated a GREAT game and w/o him, C's lose. He's been the 2nd best player in the NBA so far this year after Jokic.
And I love when he gets aggressive- it's almost always channeled into punishing other teams- strong drives and finishes to the hoop, tough defense.
And that one dumb play was out of character for him, which was why it kinda shocked me.

Good points. Refs sucked all night and Tatum had a right to be pissed off.

Who cares about 1 game? Maybe you will not be shocked if Tatum continues to express his competitive nature going forward.
