Celtics 2023 - 2024 Discussion

Yea the 86 team is right there with the 04 Sox, 84 Celtics, 11 B's and 01 Patriots as my favs.

The biggest matchup problem for the 86 team would be JT. Too fast and strong for Larry and Kevin on the wing and too big for DJ. I don't see David Thirdkill having much of a chance either.
These guys are so much stronger now than players were back then. Bird might be able to get away with it due to having such a high BB IQ but Tatum would just overpower him I think.

A different thread for another time, but my Rushmore would be much like yours: 86 Celtics, 2011 B's, 04 Sox, and 01 Pats.

The common thread for 3 out of 4 is they were winning for the first time in a long time (for the Pats ever). So there's always going to be a huge emotional attachment linked to relief.

If we could somehow take that out and look at just the body of work, my Rushmore might be different.

The 2018 Sox were an absolute juggernaut in the playoffs, beating some pretty damn good teams on the way to the podium. The 07 Sox were pretty special as well, with unexpected contributions from kids like Lester, Pedey, and Jacoby.

The 2014 Pats team was freaking incredible and broke a mini-curse. Forget the Butler play, they were down 10 in the 4th to the best defense in football and didn't blink.

The 2013 Bruins team might have been better than the 2011 team. Had they not run into the buzzsaw that was the Blackhawks at the time, they might be on my Rushmore.

Finally, if this Boston team closes the door on Dallas, it will be hard not to put them up at least as a 1A to the 86 team as the best Celtics team ever.

It honestly feels like a wild stat to me. You’d think someone would’ve pulled it off.

I don’t know how many teams in that situation have taken it to 6 or 7 but you’d think the team leading would have the tendency to get tight and choke away a game or two and lose it.
It's been done, just not in the Finals. It's going to happen at some point.

EDIT: Oops, no it hasn't. Thanks for the correction.

I agree on the 2013 B's team.....d%#*!@t.

I always overlook that 2013 Sox team and I shouldn't. Out of nowhere to win it all.

JT and JB are the core and have a solid ~5 years left in their prime. As long as Brad can keep adding a solid supporting cast, this team has a chance like the 80s Celtics to win a few titles. I really believe that.

Never been done in the NBA. Only four teams forced a game seven

Also would you guys hold off on the memory lane stuff? We’ve got a finals to win tonight. FOCUS PEOPLE
Thanks for the correction. For some reason I thought it had happened. Google is free, I should have used it!

For me the memory lane stuff is really about finding the relevance for this current team. It's so damn good that comparing it to the rest of the league doesn't do it justice. It needs to be held up to history.

Luckily for me I'm not a player or coach, so I don't have to be as focused as they do. I have no doubt they're going to come out and put these posers to bed tonight.

Damn did that 13 team capture lightning. Sometimes a championship is just about being in the right place at the right time. My favorite moment:

Interesting…I actually just saw that spread and was coming here to post.

It takes a lot for Vegas to move a line 2.5 points. Either the public hammered the Celtics line extremely hard to move it (which is unlikely within just a few hours) or there’s something else at play. Maybe an insider update on Luka’s health?
Luka not taking his pain shot is something that could limit his abilities even further though he has been MIA on the defensive end. If he were to miss the game the line would shoot to over 3.5

KP is officially out (edit) available for this game.

You do know what FOCUS stands for, right?

Probably Celtics want to play him a few minutes if victory is imminent, and have him in uniform for photos

I saw the ESPN idiots were discussing the Celtics place in history assuming they close out the series (not necessarily tonight). I couldn’t hear it because I was at a restaurant.

Top 10 all time in point differential
64-18 regular season
15-2 (currently) postseason

Would be difficult to argue this isn’t a top 10 all-time team if you don’t include multiple yearly variations of the same core teams.

I know. Some day a team will pull it off. But it won't be this year.

I think last years Celtics had the best chance of doing that... Because I legit think they were the better team. If JT doesn't get hurt in game 7 they probably do it.. Huge what if that nobody will probably ever think about. This mavs team is just outmatched so they have no shot at all.

If they win tonight we'll need some serious time to discuss where they rank amongst the all time greats.

Right now I put them in the 1983 Sixers category. Elite but not quite GOAT-ish

Don’t need to blow them out in the first half, just play good defense and take care of the ball.

Second half, let Tubby Luka get worn out, keep the pressure on, extend the lead and bring it home
