Celtics 2023 - 2024 Discussion

If not, then he's very close to it.
He's a heckuva player and has shined playing a larger role.
It seems most guys in his situation become less productive when they become key starters, as holes in their games are exposed. But Derrick really doesn't have any holes.
He has the best decision-making of any Celtic and that's saying a lot.
He's the kind of offensive player I'd hate guarding because of his footwork. You never know which foot he's gonna shoot off.
IMO he is definitely better than Jrue at this stage. Really hope we can get him extended.

Jaylen Brown is on fire, just took over in the fourth and put the nail in Orlando. What a great stretch of games for him. Offensive, defensively he’s doing it all

Team looks amazing.

One of our concerns at the beginning of the season was if Pritch and Hauser could be become solid contributors off the bench. Seems they are turning into exactly that. I've been super impressed with the leaps they've made forward this year.

As for the Jays, less and less hero iso ball, and more team ball. Jaylen Brown's turn around fade away has been money recently.

What a fun team to watch right now.

Big test coming up to see if they’ve leveled up. 4 game road trip: GS, SAC, LAC, LAL. Would love to see them take 3 of 4 (but would take 1-3 if they beat the ****ing Lakers.)

Big test coming up? They just won 5 at home in a row against three teams that are all over 0.500, and that was supposed to be the big test. Now the Celtics have big tests back to back?

Where are your update stats on JB?

100%

Missed the game but looks like JB has continued his hot streak.
Led the C's in assists with only 2 turnovers. They need him if they're gonna win the title. Don't need the spectacular game every night from him, just be consistently good all-around. He's got a nice run of games going now.
One stat that consistently jumps out at me is Pritchards rebounds. Another 6 tonight. Always smallest guy on the court and he's a beast on the boards

Brown had 17 points in the 4th Q to lead all Celtics scorers with 31 total points. I do not know if he missed a shot in the 4th Q. I am not exactly sure of Brown's latest stats - I am waiting for Ice-Ice to update us

I’ll post them tomorrow when site updates. JB has been on fire so obviously I have to give him props, though he’s still way behind in overall season efficiency. At the same time, true to what I’ve said all along, the Cs don’t win games because of him and he typically goes off on these huge margin wins. They’re so much better than Orlando and they’re 2-1 against them. In their toughest game, on the road in the IST, he went 0-14 in the 2nd half. Decent chance they’d be 3-0 without him and that’s where the counter intuitive stuff - the great stuff in sports - comes into play.

Better shot selection, less dribbling, still needs improvement but he’s doing fewer dumb things. He shoots 20+ times per game. He should have games where he dominates. The key is the stuff he’s doing beyond just the shooting.

As for the big test, I just mean they’re 6-5 on the road and I’d like to see if they can maintain this exceptional level of play with all their starters healthy. I’m not saying they should be 25-0 and have won every game but 20 points, but I think Cs fans underestimate how great this team is.

I have NBA League Pass and always listen to the opponents broadcasters, and the level of praise for their talent is like Beatles Mania level. I honestly think this team has the talent to win 65+ games and wipe the floor with their opponents almost every night. They’re that good. They should have a better road record and hopefully they’ll correct some of their issues coming up. It seems they’re still gelling given most of them have still only played together for 25 games.

2nd best start winning home games in C's history after Russell's '58 squad.
But nobody will ever touch Bird's '86 home record. 50-1!!! Including playoffs which is,even more mindboggling!!
Greatest home team in nba history,

I can give you this update. Jaylen Brown has been at his offensive peak these last four games.

His on/off is +29
Sam Hauser is +54

Hauser plays less minutes and almost never plays with the full starting lineup.

Laugh it up chumps
@Kdo5
@jimnance

That said I’m thrilled with the way Brown is playing lately but remain very concerned they’re giving near max minutes to the wrong player and it will continue to manifest at the worst times.

You are a good sport. We love you.

Speak for yourself
Nah, Ice is ok. A little obsessed with one guy, but he's a C's fan just like us.
Deep down, he knows that a solid Brown makes this team the favorite to win it all.
I've been very frustrated with Jaylen at times, myself, but I believe he's a quality player.
I just wanna see consistency from him.
I don't care about the contract- he doesn't need to be All-NBA, which he certainly is not.
The contract is not his fault. What is he supposed to do,turn it down?
And I don't blame Stevens either.
It was just about the timing,as so many things are. Celtics really had no choice at the time, imo.
His contract will be bypassed by many, very soon.
Just focus on your strengths,Jaylen like you've been doing for the last several games and Ice will be among your biggest fans. Heh.

There was no pragmatic way around the contract due to Brown’s 2nd Team all nba selection. I would say the CBA is stupid to base contracts on an imperfect accolade opinion rather than the market. Brown had a good season but come on, there are numerous players you’d sign for more money who didn’t make all nba. So no, I don’t blame the team or him, but the system is nonsensical and it seems like teams are getting lucky or unlucky due to weird loophole or whack years in the cba (Warriors with Durant, Heatles, etc) rather than by strategy.

I give Stevens every accolade imaginable for this offseason. Absolute Kasparov style stuff to land Porzingis and Holiday, plus White last year.

Just think the team needs to seriously consider the FACT that their record is about .150 winning pct points (!) lower when Brown shoots 20+ times and over a full season their efficiency increases with his decreased minuted and especially usage. It’s not thaf he sucks. It wasn’t that Nomar sucked. But it’s the same issue. And this will be more apparent against the best competition. I do like that they’re experimenting new ways to use him.

I don’t love that Tatum is iso’ing as much as he is either but it’s less of a problem. If they go into the playoffs with Tatum and Brown shooting 45 times a game, they won’t be that much better than last yea, meaning it comes down to small margins and game 7s and luck. They have capabilities that other teams don’t. They could have 5 players averaging like 20 ppg theoretically. If they figure it out they’ll be unstoppable and will roll through the playoffs.

Earlier I said we needed, oddly enough, Pritchard and Hauser to step up. They have and what a difference.

Have to learn how to get Porzi the ball in the low post. Porzi backing in with his dribble is not the answer.

Holiday has to get more involved. More Jrue and less Brown and, dare I say it, less Tatum.

More in and out ball movement, more back side cuts, and more feeds into the low post. Need all of that to perfect the "in and back out" ball movement. Celtics go left and right well, and have to add going in and out well.

Almost there. Great team.

It’s almost unchartered territory because they have almost paradoxically:

-The best scoring duo in the NBA (Tatum and Brown)
and
-The best backcourt in the NBA (White and Holiday)

And these two things aren’t always symmetrical but certain games they have been incredible in tandem.

Plus Krystaps Porzingis…lol

This is really unlike any team I recall. Most are assembled in a fairly easy way to coordinate and assign workloads.

Figuring out the best way to move the ball, shot selection, etc while utilizing everyone is going to be challenging, since there’s only one ball, and there’s such an abundance of options. So I’d just go back to, again, it seems like you’re basically just doing the enhanced 2018-23 Celtics when you have Tatum and Brown scoring 55 points on 45 attempts. Agree they are at their best when all of them are more involved: Holiday, White, Pritchard, and Hauser.

Wait are you trying to suggest Hauser needs to be on the court more than Brown? Still?!

I like Sam but the guy shoots threes and plays with effort on defense. He has nothing else to his game, yet. But I’m proud that you stand alone with this opinion, credit to persistence, I suppose.

It’s okay, I’m not gonna bag on you for being wrong unless you bring it up!
