Celtics 2023 - 2024 Discussion

I don’t even know the NBA traveling rules anymore. Someone on ESPN broke it down and showed it in slow mo to show it wasn’t travel citing something in the rulebook. Some of those step back 3s sure look like travels as well. Seems they let players take 3 steps all the time but then call travels when a planted pivot foots moves like 1 mm. I need some kind of tutorial because it’s confusing.
Agree. Plus a lot of crossover dribbles are carries and palming. Wish they'd call them. A slick crossover that involves a carry or palming is not slick. Takes no talent to do that. An 8yr old kid could do that.
You wanna see legit crossovers and magical handles? Dig up some old film on Pete Maravich and the original Tim Hardaway(Sr. of course)

I played in HS, AAU, club in college, mens leagues, etc and even a little officiating. I would like to think I know what traveling is/isn't.

I no longer have the foggiest idea except what I see players get away with.

I have no clue what the NBA formally defines as a travel once the ball has been "gathered" once the dribble has completed or after the pivot foot had been established.
This has been a major aggravation since the absorption of the ABA.

Oh, and get off my lawn!

Seems there's plenty of tolerance for palming the ball as well.

They only call carrying/palming if the player lifts his off hand in a motion to make a pass. Otherwise, they carry it on every dribble these days. Can you imagine if Magic Johnson had been able to dribble like that?

You forgot "After the ball has been palmed, the dribble is gathered, and the ball is rotated while the player's body rises along with a second step motion and after the third step takes place the player pretends the ball is released as his arms extend and the ball is strategically launched just before the fourth step happens".

Pritchard is small so three and half steps look like one and a half steps

Dominating how? Reg season? Post -season. 2018 Pats waxed the Chargers, beat the Queefs in Arrowhead and ***** -slapped the Lambs in the SB. 11-5 in the reg season is irrelevant.

2008-2010 Celtics were a dominant team. Healthy they win 3 straight.
You just answered why they weren't dominating. I include regular and playoffs.

They did beat the Chiefs. But they didn't make easy work of them. The Celtics made easy work of each opponent. 16-3 is pretty incredible.

The NEP track record was dominance. The Brady/BB issue was a distraction which spilled over in to 2018. Once they tempararily set aside their beef they reverted back to their dominant ways.

Clearly mahomie@kelcpee didn't watch all that much of the Pats in '18 and only saw Game 2 of Celts vs Pacers. They may have swept Indiana but outside of Game 2 that series was a rock fight, their only sweep was far and away their toughest series.

Getting rid of Smart and getting Jrue was the catalyst.

Love Smart when he was here and you can't hate his hustle and desire to win, but the guy was an awful influence on offense come crunch time. Ill-advised 3s and hero ball influenced the Jays in a negative way. Always seemed like they were in a panic with Smart running the offense. Jrue on the other hand seemed to have a calming influence and you saw that in crunch time these playoffs. He stepped up on offense when needed but always defferred to the Jays for the most part. I felt like Smart thought he was more important than what he was on offense in crunch time. It also opened up the offense for White who deserved more touches.

Lastly, I thought our coaching staff was brilliant. It felt like they had all the answers for whatever the other team was trying to run. I was not a Mazzulla fan after last year, I thought the team wasn't prepared to face zone defenses (which was their weakness), but during this year's run, the team not only knew what to do against zone but thrived against it. Testament to the preparation the team went through.

His game management and timeouts were also called at the right time to either stop runs from the other team, or when our offense needed a bucket. Brilliant job by him.

Agreed. I also think there was a wannabe “alpha” quality that Smart had that held Brown (and maybe Tatum) back in terms of team leadership

I understand your point, but I think it is an age thing. Brown and Tatum were held back due to their youth more than by Smart. Tatum has transformed his body and now he has to adjust his shooting to match his body and then he will be a beast. Just like Brown did, but Tatum will excel even more. Tatum will be a better shooter in 2025 and 2026 as he transforms into an NBA beast.

What question that is never asked? Who in the NBA, right now, would you want instead of Jason Tatum? If you pick a different player you are an idiot. Tatum has the build, the moves to the hoop, and now he has to re-establish his shot. After re-establishing his shot, Tatum will be a beast. The NBA guys know that so Tatum is 1st team All NBA. The idiot Internet posters and NBA expert commentators still do not get it, but they will over the next two years.

You seem to be hung up on the age thing.

Smart was clearly holding the J's back.
