Celtics 2023 - 2024 Discussion

Great win! But that's twice now that Carlisle has not called a timeout leading to a critical steal at the end of the game.
?This time he made the right call.
Indy had a fast break with potential for a numbers advantage over the C's.
A good offensive team like Indy( or C's)
will almost always get a better shot on that break than they would coming out of a timeout.
Calling a timeout allows C's to set their defense- a very tough defense- meaning
you're going to end up with a highly contested shot. I wouldn't want Mazzula calling a to in that situation either.
You have to give credit to the C's defense- everyone hustled back negating an Indy advantage and Jrue just made a great play. Against just about any other team Indy would've either scored or gotten fouled and win the game

Great finish but the Pacers' offensive adjustment to attack the paint needs to be addressed. GS destroyed us with a bunch of easy bunnies in the finals too.
Irving's strength is his ability to get to the basket. He and Doncic could present problems if they play Dallas in the finals.

I'm not so sure that it was the right move. All they had to do was call a TO and they get a very good chance to inbound the ball and end the game. It reminded me of the Bird steal and feed to DJ vs Detroit.

They were down 8 with 2:25 left, and finished:

Brown fg
Stop
Tatum 3
Indy FTs
Horford 3 (off ridiculous Tatum assist)
Holiday fg plus 1
Stop
Tatum miss, Holiday steal
Holiday FTs
Nesmith miss

13-2 run in 2:24. Amazing.

Every title run has a couple of finishes that stay with you years later. If the Celtics pull it off, this will be one of them.

Tatum's insane stat line really reflects how great and bigtime clutch he was last night:
36 pts
9 rebs
8 assists with 0 turnovers!!! Amazing for someone who handles the rock as much as him
2 blocks
1 steal

I don't think I ever saw the play he called at the end with four players in the backcourt running essentially a 999 ( or in this case 9999) play with all running a go pattern to catch and shoot a 3. He got the shot off but who knows if it might become more common now.

Maybe he got confused and thought Peyton was inbounding the ball

Contrast that with a sequence end of game with 25s left when "JAG Coach Joe" called (imho) a critical timeout while Jrue was scaring the crap out of me dribbling everywhere with multiple people converging. Tatum missed the following drive, but it was a good setup/look.

Edit: JimNance made great points about Indy's not calling a timeout may have been the better play. That being said, it was a 1 on 4... which is basically what Jrue was facing in the aforementioned situation.

Also on Mazzulla, Tatum said during a 3rd quarter timeout he told them to stop feeling sorry for themselves. I love that

I still say Jrue should have bricked that last free throw with 1.2 seconds left. Indy got a good look with that last shot.

Risky. If the Pacers get the rebound they'll have a chance for the win instead of a tie

Dallas up 2-0 with next two games in Dallas. It's tough to lose a series like that so looks like Dallas will be next.
Also, I think Doncic and Irving are slightly better than Tatum and Brown. And Gafford and Lively will certainly give Horford and Zinger (if/when he returns) problems as both are long and very good defenders. Dallas can also match us point for point. It will be a very good series. I think Hauser will start to knock down those 3's, which will be huge when the starters need a breather. He's too good of a shooter to continue struggling like he's been for seems like entire playoffs.

If Indy gets a clean rebound with just under a second left and call time out can they advance the ball to half court? That would be the only reason I'd want to make that free throw.

Yep, they had a timeout left. If they got the rebound they'd have the chance for the heave to win it

I thought Jrue might’ve passed it over to Tatum when running up the court. Clock probably would’ve run out with the Pacers failing to get the foul in or if they did well less than a second on the clock.

Though I understand not taking any risk and also putting the better free throw shooter at the line.

I would prefer the heave from 80 feet over them being able to inbound the ball at half court. It’s why I need to know if they could move the ball to half court after a rebound and calling time out. Besides, there’s a very good chance that a brick would cause a funny bounce and Indy might never had a chance to call time.
It doesn’t matter now, I just want to know the rule.

You simply don’t intentionally miss a free throw with a chance to go up three points unless there’s like .3 seconds left.

Sorry yeah, they could've brought to half court

Dallas doesn't match up well with Boston. The Celtics can throw multiple defenders at Luka and Kyrie and hopefully, limit their influence. On the other hand, the Mavs don't have good defensive match ups for the Jays.

It goes without saying that we need KP fit and firing. Being able to bring him or Horford off the bench will be a massive differentiator.
