Cap Rollover question

Let’s say we’re done making significant additions through free agency and trades. Can anyone give me an idea of how much cap space will typically get eaten up by draft picks and incentives. According to OTC we still have 68 million in space. For some reason I woke up this morning and wondered about cap rollover for next year.

I don’t about cap space because it can be manipulated in many ways. Was just curious on a rainy Easter Eve morning.

I wonder how much of the 58 ( after rookie signings) million they can roll over?

An additional 10-15 will be used during the season too.

So they will possibly be able to rollover 30-35 million. Or is there a maximum amount they can rollover?

There's no maximum, the last I checked Miguel had the Patriots at 38.5M in effective space after accounting for draft, 52 and 53, PS, bonuses, and potential injuries. Miguel's number is conservative and if they avoid the injury bug they'll have a little more cap. I'd be slightly surprised if they carry over less than 30M.

They can always renegotiate and spread larger cap hits out, especially on younger players by extending them.

FWIW they're only over if you count 2026 draft picks not yet made and don't count rollover.

neither have a guaranteed salary next year... possible cut candidates or base salary to bonus conversion... easily pick up 20 to 25m in cap space either way...

same with Hunter Henry, Kendrick Bourne, Jabrill Peppers...

Miguel, the expert, estimates all the remaining costs, such as draft picks, 52nd and 53rd player, practice squad, in season acquisition, etc to be about 26 mill.

This can change a lot at cutdown, if for example a UDFA bears out a guy with a high salary, or a guy with a dead money hit gets cut.

No offense but here's to hoping you're wrong and he has the kind of year that makes an extension the preferred method for lowering his cap hit.

No disagreement there, I would rather see him turn into Quinton Nelson than be cut, I’m just referring to what I think is the most likely outcome. And if I remember correctly the deal was structured in such a way as to give them an easy out after 2seasons.

The cost of an 'easy out' keeps going up, Onwenu has a $7.5M cost to cut after this season which would yield $17.5M 'savings' against the cap. More than anything else I guess it speaks to the premium the Pats paid for being a less than desirable destination when they re-signed him.

Let's see how Onwenu plays with a decent line and coaching. The OL plays as a unit, so hard to know how much was his fault last year, particularly given the instability at center. He also played out of position a third of the time - and he even practiced at left guard. He played 691 snaps at right guard and 329 at right tackle.

It's unfortunate, but the way he came into camp last year, so fat and out of shape, and he was no better than any one else on that line for more than half the year - at 19 million. Maybe he turns it around, but we'll see.

I agree, if he comes into camp, or any of them come into camp out of shape then I pity that fool. Vrabel isn’t going to have any tolerance for that at all, and he will torture them in camp. And they won’t be part of his long term plans if they do.

Hopefully all these guys got that message, and we see the results that come with coming into the season in your best shape. I honestly don’t get it, I’m at the gym 5-6 nights a week, and I’m not getting ready for anything other than golfing and mountain biking. I can’t imagine being a professional athlete and not caring about making the best of that opportunity. And I don’t think Vrabel will let them get away with not putting everything into it.
