Can’t act like he choked in the big moments when he was pretty big for us.

o_O

That Play inside the 10...Wouldn't you call that a pretty big moment?

But nobody's saying that he choked.

He did make some Plays.

Ahhh...How delightful to read a well-considered, thoughtful argument, quite in contrast with the raw sewage that certain posters routinely spew!!

If you don't mind, I'll carve out this one part of your response, as it's of particular interest to me, and circle back to other ones, afterwards ~ possibly tomorrow, as I'm planning on turning in early this morning, after a long night of bloodsucking!! :D

Let me give @manxman2601 a shout out, as well, as he may be interested in chipping in a comment or two...and perhaps others will add their perspectives?

Let me bring your quote back down here:

You make multiple strong points, here.

It looks like you misunderstood me on #12, the part you quoted, though, because you imply that I'm "worried" about Cap Space, when I was only clearing it out to spend it. :D

And I take a back seat to no man in my faith and trust in Mad Bill, even though I've emphatically disagreed with many of his moves, over the years.

Maybe we should be worried about it in a year, though, as I alluded to in part #1, up there...

Here's what elicited my concerns, about which I'd certainly like to hear your perspective: One year, hence, I foresee no less than 6 enormous raises coming due:

FB Brandin Cooks
SE Christopher Hogan
OG Shaq Mason
BT Malcom Brown
BT Danny Shelton
DE Trey Flowers

Flanker Back, Split End, Offensive Guard, Bear Tackle, Bear Tackle, Dragon End. :D

You can see where I'm going with this.

Between the six of'm, they count a pinch above $20,000,000 on our Cap, right now.

Next year, if we keep all 6? With Brown and Shelton looking at Year 5 Club Options, and the rest'f'm free to roam Free Agency, and with all 6 likely to be even better, this year, especially Hogan, we could easily be looking at $50,000,000 or $60,000,000.

And I agree with you: Mad Bill is amazing with the Cap, one result of which is that we're not looking at much at all in the way of Expiring Dead Money or Expirations of the Bloated Salaries of OverPaid Veterans to defray those upcoming costs with.

So that's my concern, you see.

Those Salaries are one year away from hitting us like a Pig In A Python.

That's all right: I know that it's an anaconda. But I thought that the picture was hilarious, and I didn't really give a rat's ass, to be honest with you, what kind of snake it was...

And "pig in an anaconda" doesn't illiterate as well. ;)

2nd Team Getting Their First Start
I don't think Rivers is ever going to be a Ninko replacement. He's not big enough. No I see Rivers as the guy we keep so we didn't have to go after Vinny Curry. THAT's the role we get to see from him, if not this year, by next year when the ACL will be well in his past.

Rivers is listed at 6'5 250lbs. thats pretty damn big. I don't think he has the skill set to replace Ninko, but I agree they may have a different role in mind.

I dont think prima donna is the right word for it.

But there were a couple instances throughout the season that just made me scratch my head. The drops on short throws on the LOS where he mentally was already turning before even catching the ball or not contesting various deep balls that ended up INTs or close to INTs.

Add in his limited route tree and what WRs that have a big name now make in the post-Sammy Watkins reality.. I am not surprised that most prefer the first round pick to Cooks..

Cooks did nothing but produce good numbers for us, but some patriots fans (not you) will continue to kick him on his way out

I think Cooks is a very good player, but the value of number 23 overall for is too good to pass up . I like the trade. It's clear based on today's reports both sides couldn't agree on an extension

Off The Grid,

Congrats on calling the trade but you are dead wrong about Cooks being a Prima Donna. I am friends with one of Cook's close friends and that's not his personality at all. Not at all.

You got the trade right, but you are wrong about his Attitude. He's a quiet, religious person. Keeps to himself. But is an extremely hard worker, and puts a lot of value into team. His is also very family oriented.

On the first: Thank you for your kind words, Brother Britt!!

One the second: I believe that you've misunderstood my meaning. May I recapitulate?

01 ~ I never called "cowardice" on any play. I did call his play in the 2nd quarter "selling out", and I stand by that...But I would characterize it as a "Business Decision." Had Cooks cut to the left or right ~ we're talking about the play inside the 10 yard line that cost us a 1st down and led to a failed Field Goal ~ he would've exposed himself to an enormous hit...so he jumped. That's awfully lame, but not cowardly.

02 ~ By now, you probably already realize: I didn't even mention the play he got injured on, much less attribute his getting clobbered to "cowardice." That Play disgusted and horrified me, but it was not Cooks, but Jenkins, who elicited those feelings.

Thanks again for your gracious words on both counts, and I hope that clears things up?

Yes, indeed, and my apologies for my misunderstanding. Thank you for sharing your insights and opinions, which I always find absorbing.

I think many people are undervaluing Cooks, but you might overvalue him a little bit. He is clearly a tier away from being among the true elite receivers in the league and yet he is in line to make maybe 17m a year on that extension. He is a very good player and damn good at what he does well.

If another team can maximize his strengths then maybe this team thinks his role will be worth that big contract. Personally, I don't think he is worth that much in a NE offense. You might find it ridiculous but on some level media guys like Curran are onto something that a healthy Mitchell in his specific role in NE could be more efficient than Cooks was last season.

BB is the king of putting together teams made up of many niche players whose strengths fit very well into our schemes. Those players are generally cheaper than those that can do a lot of things very well.

Do we win the afc championship game without Cooks?

Who knows what the gameplan would have been if Cooks was not on the roster. Either way, overall he played well for us last year and certainly would have deserved a ring.

I like Mitchell the player and person, I just think his injury history is very troubling.
