Obviously Belichick and Pioli must have agreed on this. What is the big deal if he is a situational guy?

$1mm is not a lot of money, but I thought we'd be seeing Shanle coming here, not some washed up overrated has-been that is going to be a pylon on defense. This is crap.

Signing Seau doesn't necessarily mean a trade won't go down for more LB depth.

Seau is proabably better than any player we would have received from Dallas.

When he does sign. I hope:

1) He stays healthy emough to last an entire season
2) Him and Harriosn can really be the heavy hitters right up the middle. You know Harrison gave Belichick a glowing recommendation
3) I hope he becomes our Ted Johnson LB'er, in which i mean on third and short or whatever and short he comes in and makes a stop on the run. AKA a big run stuffer.

With that said knowing this team will compete for the title also must boost his excitement level.

So he could be a great haul. Could be the key word.

He moved Chad Brown from OLB to ILB. Chad Brown this TC before getting injured looked great. ILB he couldnt adapt too.

The guy can still play, it's just a question of how smoothly he can integrate into the system and if he can stay healthy. Relax dude, nothing is written in blood. If he blows, they'll cut him.

The Seau as coach thing is so overrated. Players play, they don't coach. I don't buy the mentor thing. It always sounds good, but rarely does it matter.

My main issues:

1-Is he going to make it through a season? Highly doubtful.

2-Is he going to take a roster spot from a promising young player like Roach, Woods or Mincey?

If they sign Seau he will make the team. Why would they bother to sign a guy two weeks into camp if they were just going to cut him a week and a half later?

He'll make it.

That means Beisel might get the boot.

Remember, they still need linebackers for the future. Not saying Beisel is it, but I think they're going to stash LBs all over the Practice squad and IR if need be.

I really think Rodney and Seau putting these young guys through an intensive "boot camp" type of building up is part 2 of the reason Seau's here.

The reason for this potential signing is pretty clear to me and is two-fold.

To a lesser degree it addresses the need for depth at the position.
I'm OK with that as watching Lord Monty, Gardner and Davis made me physically ill.

The 2nd part addresses issues brought up by McGinest during his recent intereview. Namely leadership and attitude.

You bring in a guy who, for as he said in a very annoying retirement press conference; has been in the league for 16 seasons, went to 12 pro bowls, made tons of dough, got tons of adoration and was fortunate enough to GET to a Super Bowl.

Yet it's not enough. He needs a title and probably feels this is truly a good last shot.

What kind of example does that set for the younger players?

Pretty powerful I think.

Plus I gotta say Seau has historically been an NFL media darling.

If the Pats go to the big game again, the media will be all over Seau and the Pats like flies on you know what.

I agree that he probably will but if this is in fact a desperation move then he might not. It could be the team doesn't really like him that much, but he is brought in because he is the best they've got. In that case he might not be good enough to actually beat out any of the other linebackers and is cut. However the fact that at this point the Pats have not made a trade and lured Seau out of retirement shows that they like him. After all trading for a decent but somewhat unknown linebacker would make a lot more sense than taking the time to convince a guy to forego retirement if you think he can't still play.

I like Woods and Mincey showed some.

I think the future of the rest is pure speculation.

Considering the total lack of young talent why give up on Beisel?

We're talking very low picks and UDFA's. They saw something in the guy to spend this much time on him.

What's the story on his injury? I think I was away when it happened so I'm clueless. Where is it and how long is his expected recovery? I realize that the best answers to these questions you can give me will be somewhat dicey cuz its Belichick but I know nothing.

I don't think he does. He's been doing this a long time, so he doesn't need the experience as much as the practices where he can learn the system. Additionally he is old and therefore more fragile so it would be better for him to get playing time in practices than in preseason games where play is less brutal and risk of serious injury somewhat reduced. Seau just needs to learn the schemes. He knows how to do the rest.

Jason Taylor said hes a world class leader and his pregame speeches are legendary! At least we got leadership and a very experienced guy..if he can stay healthy for us for a year..im all for it!

I am flabbergasted at the general negativity of this forum.

I was a huge Junior fan for years when he was in SD.

Now we have both Rodney--who was released b/c SD thought he was washed up--and Junior, who if nothing else brings a depth of experience second to few if any in the NFL.

Junior Seau is a likely HOF candidate, and I welcome him to the New England Patriots with open arms.

Seau just needs to learn the schemes.

He played for Saban last year, he'll pick up on the similar Belichick defense very quickly. He won't play on Saturday, though.
