Caldwell or Gaffney - Who would you rather have?

In all honesty what they did last season has little bearing on this year and the up coming camp/preseason. To the Pats coaching staff, they all start fresh at camp. So it really all comes down to who’s going to stand out in camp and preseason.

FWIW, I re-watched the Pats-Chargers game yesterday. One thing that was pretty clear to me is that Gaffney was not able to get good separation throughout the game. He picked up the majority of his yardage on incredible laserbeam throws by Brady that were in many cases threaded through a couple defenders. Throws that Brady probably would never have even tried if the Pats weren't down 14-3 with 1:00 left in the half at the time.

Meanwhile, Caldwell was working against the Charger's #1 CB and having a solid game that left them wondering why they let him go in the first place.

there's 2 ways to look at everything.

If Caldwell can play pretty decent against #1 CBs but then drop balls when he's wide open, there is a problem.

It's called: Reche Caldwell is erratic.

(In a nutshell, Caldwell. He is consistently solid throughout the season and into the playoffs. Gaffney has one great game the entire season. And you're telling me you'd rather have Gaffney?)

Caldwell wasn't consistently solid, he was mediocre, but Brady still found ways to get him the ball.

Gaffney stepped up in the playoffs while Caldwell choked. We're going to be in the playoffs this year, I'd rather have Gaffney. Especially with a full season and training camp more time to work with Tom.

No, I never said that. haha But i do think that for the most part, Brady makes receivers.
And i think Caldwell did a good job, just not up to my standards. Especially in the playoffs.
Do my standards mean a damn thing? Nope. I'm just praying that BB and Co. witnessed the avoidable receiving disaster that i witnessed.


I want to see if what i believe is right. Does Brady really make the receivers? And i have no clue how this is going to work this season. We have frickin Moss, Stallworth, and Welker coming.
************, If Brady does make receivers than what the hell is he going to do with these studs? Will it work out?
Maybe it won't since they already made names for themselves elsewhere and might not fit in the system so well, but if that's the case, we wouldn't have snagged 'em.


It's going to be interesting to watch and we're going to learn a lot this season.

Hasn't Reche's dropped ball % already been analyzed? If I remember correctly, it's about average. Better than Stallworth's for example.

You are judging Caldwell on one dropped pass (the other one, as has been pointed out, made no difference in the game). This is idiotic.

No the other drop was also horrible.

Luckily, Gaffney bailed him out the next play with a catch that's 1000 times more difficult.

Both drops were chokes, both count in my book.

Whether someone stepped up big the next play or not it does not matter, he still choked twice, and he choked big.

I was commenting on how ridiculous to ignore a dropped easy catch, just because someone else made an amazing catch the following play to bail him out... (who happens to be the "other" guy).

It's amazing that some of you are insisting that Reche only screwed up once, because the first drop was followed up with a TD catch to save his arse.

1 drop stinks but isn't the end of the world.
2 drops says a lot, especially when he was wide open.

– Jabar Gaffney did have a drop down the sideline, but he clearly looks like a guy who’s continued to make progress. He’s a smooth rout-runner and with a great understanding of how to set a defender up, and the coaches know it, based on the chances he’s getting. If the season started today, it’s probably not a stretch to say he’d start opposite Moss.

36 pages!!! My Lord.

My viewing of the games indicates anecdotally that Gaffney seems to have a much easier time getting open. For what we need him to do, he's my choice. Yes, I laughed when the Patriots picked him up after being cut by the Texans and Eagles. I'm glad to say I was wrong.

Frankly, I think we keep both and trade Washington. However, would it really be a shock if BB got rid of two of the three and kept Kelvin Kight for his special teams abilities or Childress for long-term potential? I mean, we're talking about the #7 WR if Jackson makes it back at some point.

I haven't read through 36 pages, so my apologies if I'm echoing somebody.

As a very vocal person in the Caldwell camp, I have no problem being wrong if Gaffney does build on last year and does beat out Caldwell for a slot in the WR. I expect both to make it on the final 53 man roster, but what number WR they are is up for debate.

I am hesitant to buy into Gaffney too much after two great post season games, one ok post season game, and one training camp practice.

Joking aside, I'll be surprised if Caldwell is on the roster of any team opening day. He might bounce around a bit this year, but after that he's probably done in the NFL.
