Bye-week Thread: Radical Rule Changes

How about adding a "four-point play" option. After scoring a TD, a team has the option to try to get into the end zone from the ten or twenty, one play, no kicking allowed.

We're talking XFL type stuff.

Eliminate the punt and field goal on 4th downs. Offense picks up where the defense left off.

I think this is the best single modification I have heard. Just simply get rid of punting, kicking can stay. Game to start at the 50 yard line after each score.

Force all players to wear skirts and panties and play in Kangol caps.

Seems that would satisfy today's kinder, gentler faux fans.

Eliminate PAT kicks. Pick different distances from the goal line to attempt 1-point, 2-point or maybe even 3-point conversions.

That would add strategy to the game and excitement to comebacks.

Abolish the current divisions and go to a tiered league structure, as in every soccer league except for the MLS.

There's still an AFC and NFC, sixteen teams each.

The top four teams in each conference are in the Elite division. The next four are the Upper division. The next four are in the Middle division. The last four are in the Lower (or "Jets memorial") division.

Elite division gets two playoff spots, including one bye. Upper division gets one playoff spot with a bye. Middle and Lower division gets one playoff spot. The last playoff spot is a wild card available only to the upper three divisions, with the first tiebreaker being to go to the team in the higher division.

Each team has to play every team in their division home and home (6 games) and every team in the other same level division (4 games). The rest of their schedule, they have to play the teams that finished the last year in the same place within their division. The #1 finishers within divisions all play each other next season. Or if that's too much interconference play, then a team will have to play the teams in their conference that finished last year in the same half of within their division. In this case, the #1 (or #2 team) in AFC Elite will have to play next year the #1 and #2 teams in the Upper, Middle, and Jets Memorial division.

The top team in each division (except for Elite) gets promoted. The bottom team in each division (except for Jets Memorial) gets demoted.

Draft is tiered. Every Jets Memorial division team will draft before the Middle division teams draft, and so on.

If you think we got joy out of seeing the Jets implode last year, imagine the joy we'd feel if they got demoted at the end of a year.

If we took last year's results as the starting point for this structure, here'd be the new divisions for this season. I didn't work out ties.

AFC Elite - Den, NE, Hou, Indy
AFC Upper - Bal, Cin, Pit, Mia or SD
AFC Middle - Mia or SD, NYJ, Buf, Ten
AFC Lower - Buf, Cle, Jax, KC

NFC Elite - Atl, SF, GB, Sea
NFC Upper - Was, Min, Chi, NYG
NFC Middle - Dal, ST, 2 of TB, Car, and NO
NFC Lower - 1 of TB, Car, and NO, ARI, Phi, Det

NE's schedule Den, Hou, and Indy home and away. ATL, SF, GB, SEA, from the opposite Elite division. And the other AFC #1s and #2s would be Bal, Cin, Mia or SD, NYJ, Buf, and Cle.

Get rid of the offensive line and make the defense count 5 monkeys before rushing. Make all players power walk instead of run and instead of tackling we do bear hugs. Oh wait... Those are the changes already coming from Goodell.
I like this rule except it should be 3 Mississippi!
