They say Harmon will get 5-6 mill...i think he will be back..but i would also like jefferson

Not snide at all.
I'm interested in your opinion. You said he consistently graded out as a top 5 corner. I was curious at the time where that grading came from but wasn't going to pick on semantics.
But now you are contradicting that.
Just asking for clarification.
OK, here's what I'm basing that comment on. I saw a PFF list where Butler was rated the 3rd rated FA in all position (91, whatever that means) and the top CB. I read a post that FO's had him ranked in the top 5. My eyeballs saw he was usually the best CB on the field in the 16 games I saw,

So I fel fairly confident saying he's a top 5 CB in this league. If you are anyone else wanted to argue he's a top 7 or top 10, I wouldn't bother to argue with you because the point is that Butler is among the best CB's in the league, (though after 10 I would likely start to argue. ). Picking EXACTLY where he is on that list is very subjective anyway. But again that wasn't the point.

The real point of the post (and maybe I didn't make it clear enough) was that the Pats only have to pay Butler $4MM next season (assuming he's tagged with a 1st round tender). I contended that no team will pay Butler the market price of being the best FA CB available the 10-14MM/yr AND give up their #1 pick. I then tried to emphasize that opinion by pointing out that Butler is not what NFL teams ideally look for in an elite CB. These days Patrick Peterson and Josh Norman at 6'1 are who they want to pay big money to. Butler doesn't fit the physical prototype of the typical shutdown CB. He is listed at 5'11, but I've been next to him and that's not close. 5'10 would be stretching it.

The 2nd point of the post was to point out the obvious and say it would be a nice gesture for the Pats to extend Butler to give him MORE than the $4MM even if they don't have to to keep him. Then I offered up a possible scenario that I thought would be fair to both sides. JMHO, and one of a thousand scenarios that could be done. None of which matter because we don't do this for a living.

I hope that better explains the post

I would much rather have Amendola back than to bring Woods in. Amendola has something you can't buy, clutch, and I'll take that over more regular season production every time. I don't think Amendola is going anywhere because I think they would have released him prior to free agency to give him his best shot at finding another team. I don't see the Patriots waiting until the chairs are filled to cut ties with him.

I'm really hoping they get Branch done before free agency opens.

If they resign Harmon then that would seal Richards as a complete bust.

I think they could have both. I get the feeling Amendola will take whatever deal that keeps him with NE.

I'm just not that interested in Woods, I would rather they look elsewhere.

Amendola is clutch and will be forever remembered. I also think he may well stay. The problem is that he is like 'Mr Glass' from that awful film 'Unbreakable'. If you play him for seven games with high reps, then there is a chance he will break. That will be factored in when they are looking at a 53, as well as pay.

Disagree completely, Richards is more Chung's back-up as an in the box safety than he is a deep cover guy. If Harmon goes I would expect them to look for a free safety not a strong safety.

That knock ends up going on most slot receivers because they take an unreal beating, what matters is how tough they are and how well they hang onto the ball, and Amendola is exceptional in both regards.

Yes, now I understand more clearly.

My thoughts:

I put Butler more in the middle of #1 corners, but that's not a huge difference.
Whether PFF had him 1st or 100th would mean nothing to me, because they are 100% useless.

The RFA is an interesting dynamic. I think what is most likely is that no one would give up a 1st for any RFA. But if they were willing to Butler would reject a lowball offer. This is why the scenario I was discussing is basically impossible.

I think what should and hopefully will happen is this.
Butler is tendered for 4 mill. Both sides will watch what corners sign for. If the top corner in FA this year gets 14 mill for 5 years, that is Butler comparison. Understanding that signing today is in Butler best interest as it reduces risk, he would take slightly less than 5 at 14 plus the 4 this year, and sign for say, 6 for 72. That gives him 5 years at 13.6 added to his 4 mill this year. Essentially he cashes in a year early.
The Patriots then will have the ability to put as much or little of the hit into this years cap number.

Tough in what way? Certainly not in taking hits and staying on the field. Amendola not only misses a ton of games but at this point in his career is held to a limit of snaps, which during the regular season seems to max out around 15 or 20.

Quiet little signing, but Matt Lengel is coming back.

I liked what little I saw of him last year. Nice depth signing.

King info should follow soon. Miguel put them under the cap weeks ago..
