OK, here's what I'm basing that comment on. I saw a PFF list where Butler was rated the 3rd rated FA in all position (91, whatever that means) and the top CB. I read a post that FO's had him ranked in the top 5. My eyeballs saw he was usually the best CB on the field in the 16 games I saw,Not snide at all.
I'm interested in your opinion. You said he consistently graded out as a top 5 corner. I was curious at the time where that grading came from but wasn't going to pick on semantics.
But now you are contradicting that.
Just asking for clarification.
I would much rather have Amendola back than to bring Woods in
I think they could have both. I get the feeling Amendola will take whatever deal that keeps him with NE.
If they resign Harmon then that would seal Richards as a complete bust.
Amendola is clutch and will be forever remembered. I also think he may well stay. The problem is that he is like 'Mr Glass' from that awful film 'Unbreakable'. If you play him for seven games with high reps, then there is a chance he will break. That will be factored in when they are looking at a 53, as well as pay.
Yes, now I understand more clearly.OK, here's what I'm basing that comment on. I saw a PFF list where Butler was rated the 3rd rated FA in all position (91, whatever that means) and the top CB. So I fel fairly confident saying he's a top 5 CB in this league. If you are anyone else wanted to argue he's a top 7 or top 10, I wouldn't bother to argue with you because the point is that Butler is among the best CB's in the league, (though after 10 I would likely start to argue. ). Picking EXACTLY where he is on that list is very subjective anyway. But again that wasn't the point.
The real point of the post (and maybe I didn't make it clear enough) was that the Pats only have to pay Butler $4MM next season (assuming he's tagged with a 1st round tender). I contended that no team will pay Butler the market price of being the best FA CB available the 10-14MM/yr AND give up their #1 pick. I then tried to emphasize that opinion by pointing out that Butler is not what NFL teams ideally look for in an elite CB. These days Patrick Peterson and Josh Norman at 6'1 are who they want to pay big money to. Butler doesn't fit the physical prototype of the typical shutdown CB. He is listed at 5'11, but I've been next to him and that's not close. 5'10 would be stretching it.
The 2nd point of the post was to point out the obvious and say it would be a nice gesture for the Pats to extend Butler to give him MORE than the $4MM even if they don't have to to keep him. Then I offered up a possible scenario that I thought would be fair to both sides. JMHO, and one of a thousand scenarios that could be done. None of which matter because we don't do this for a living.
I hope that better explains the post
Tough in what way? Certainly not in taking hits and staying on the field. Amendola not only misses a ton of games but at this point in his career is held to a limit of snaps, which during the regular season seems to max out around 15 or 20.That knock ends up going on most slot receivers because they take an unreal beating, what matters is how tough they are and how well they hang onto the ball, and Amendola is exceptional in both regards.
