I love Butler, its hard for me to gauge how good he is. Is he a top 5 CB? A top 10 CB?
Either way I would rather the Patriots keep Butler and Gilmore for the 2017 season.

If Butler turned down 40m guaranteed maybe he is getting bad advice. He is great at covering and is a physical tackler and just an all around great player. But he does lack size.

Here's what I think will happen. Pats are helping Saints drive up the price of Cooks. We'll resign Butler to big money, have a monster secondary and Belichick will find some other no name WR like Hogan who comes here and looks like a star.

Every day this trade DOESN'T happen is a blessing.

For the relatively low price of about $17MM the Pats will have 2 of the top 8 CB's in the league in one secondary. Only Denver will have anything that approximates that. If it's only for one season, I can live with that.

Would the Pats offense be better with Cooks? Sure. Most likely. But the question is, how much better? Would the offensive up tick be enough to compensate for a defense which would be THAT much worse without Butler? I don't think so. Not even close.

The only one who wins if this trade goes through are the FF owners. If the Pats need to add a different kind of skill set to the ones they already have on the WR corps, just resign Mike Floyd, who would be thrilled to be here for just pennies on the dollar.

What if there is no choice? A Logan Ryan type deal is good for him being an RFA. Even 11 per for 3. If he wants more than that, no chance.

He can take it the distance any play.
If BB can get Cooks and keep Butler he is truly the best GM ever.
