garçon at 8 a year is a gross overpay as are the rest of wrs in this market right now. The pats haven't had less than 10 wins in almost a decade largely because they have Tom Brady as the quarterback.

fyp........

Enjoyed*

Since then we've won a lot of games and come up empty handed in the post season. I guess I'm happy with that. But I don't see how looking to a big name FA to push them over the top makes us bad fans.

Enjoyed...through the end of last season, yes.

You realize that Tom Brady is a HoF QB with about 4 years left and the Patriots need to maximize their opportunity for success during that time, because Tom Brady won't be coming through that door 5 years from now.

No, I didn't realize that. Thanks for the 411.

Really, though, they WENT TO THE SUPERBOWL LAST YEAR. Sometimes I feel like I'm reading posts of confused Rams or Browns fans who logged in here during a fugue state, or something.

These lines of criticism might have some grounding in reality were they not being made a day or so into FA. If we find ourselves heading into the draft without having made some upgrades (as we've already seen, the likelihood of this happening is close to nil), I'll be right there *****ing with everyone else.

Patsfans aka sunshine.com. If you're negative in any way the village idiots come out and complain. Only positive thoughts on here!

You should start your own site where you complain about the Patriots 24/7, after all it is what you are best at. You can ban anyone who doesn't cry b.tch, and moan about everything the way you do.

You can call it MISERYLOVESCOMPANY.COM

I enjoy winning SB's. Not losing them.

I find it odd that you would enjoy that.

Is this a serious question? I'll assume you are just being sarcastic and just pointing out how stupid some of these early deals have been.

I dont think the Garcon deal was stupid, I think paying someone Megatron money is stupid and puts your franchise in trouble but that's a different story.

NFC West...you know they are the ones that fielded a 7-9 team for the playoffs that year.

I find it odd that you would misconstrue my words to assert something I, myself, have never said.

Oh, no, actually, I don't.

The bar is, justifiably, raised for the Patriots. However, that being said, do you really not enjoy your team getting to the Super Bowl because they've lost good games by less than a touchdown a couple of times?

I think you know what I'm getting at.

Of course I'm happy with the Pats. I just don't understand some peoples need to crucify those of us that would like to see the Pats make a free agent splash.

I'm sure things will be alright if they don't, but it doesn't mean things would be bad if they did.

Who has crucified you, and where?

Not me personally.

And I don't have specific examples.

But you see someone make a comment, or complaint, and it's "omg go play madden more" or "this isn't fantasy football moron"

The Eagles paying DeSean Jackson 51 million over 5 years can't help these negotiations any, either.

Your team only has a handful of players making $8/year. You are limited in the number of players that you can give that type of money to. Is Garcon really the player you want to give that money to? Is Garcon the player you want to sign when it will directly interfere with your ability to sign Welker? After all, you aren't going to have two players making that type of money at the WR position.

Personally, I don't think Garcon is all that special, nevermind someone making $8/year. I was shocked to see him sign the kind of contract. To me, it is a sign of a desperate team. It would be the height of stupidity for the Patriots, who are not a desperate team, to pay desperation prices for these types of players.

This is probably a good thing for us.

Harbaugh: "Now are you really interested in playing for us, or you just testing the market and flying to N.E?

Wasn't Maningham's original plan supposed to be signing w/ Tampa because of some position coach who's now there? Maybe he's been told that Tampa's finished spending stupid $$$ on flake WRs after the VJax signing.

They are also having Eddie Royal in. Looks like they are just browsing the WR isle to see if anything fits.

I wouldn't mind picking this guy up if nobody wants him.

Assante could have been had for 5M/year before the 06 season but then he broke out and after that yes he was never coming back.

Mankins wanted to get paid as well but they could have gotten him for 7/year instead of the just over 8/year they paid.

I never said they don't sign players early. Ty Warren, Nick Kaczur and Dan Koppen are three more. But in these cases the deals were for below market value where the team was getting a total deal but the player some long term security in a sport where injuries can end your career quickly. Mayo is the exception to the rule. He got a market value deal which tells you how much they value him. I'm hoping with the TEs they're willing to get to something close to market in order to get it done.

Finley just got 2/15M with the idea he'll cash in during the FA period for 2014 when the cap esculates. Gronk is going to be in prime position for that too. Gronk is playing on a 4/4.1 contract. I don't have the details but lets assume you have him for a million on each of the next two seasons even though it's probably less with a signing bonus. If he comes up in 2014 you might be looking at 5/60 to sign him and I think that's conservative. If they said to him now we'll extend you for 5 years and 40M and give you 10M up front now the total deal would be 7/42 vs 7/62 the other way. So by being proactive and giving the player long term security they've made him more affordable by 20M.

If he puts up two more years like this it's going to be more than 12M/year.

I agree with what your saying, what Im saying is that not all players agree to that, Mankins didnt and they tried to sign him early, he wanted what he wanted either now or later. Im also saying just because they dont do it doesnt mean they didnt try, it just means we didnt hear about it, thats the way they do business in Foxboro, everythings on the down low, we only hear about it when the player agrees and a new deal is signed.
I must have heard Felger say 100 times they took Mankins to the wall on his original deal and now hes over paid and they could have gotten him cheaper, NO they couldnt, they tried, it just wasnt widely reported that they tried.
It was either Reiss or Ian R that said they tried two years early to up Mankins but he didnt agree to a deal.

Mankins wanted to talk deal. The Patriots wanted to wait.
