OK . . . let's get it out on the record.

If it has to be one or the other, who would you rather have--Barwin or Matthews?

Is this a trick question, like "do you still beat your wife" ??

I would be thrilled with either. I know this doesn't answer your question, but I hope BB has the choice and let him make it.

I'm trying to decide,I'll vote later.

Neither. I'd rather have TBC or the 2009 version of Rosie Colvin than either of these over-hyped kids.

I like Barwin, but not at #23......

Gimme Matthews at #23 any day

Barwin. He has the highest upside of any linebacker outside of Curry and Maualuga.

Barwin, regardless of where we are picking. He has the highest upside of any linebacker (perhaps even including Curry, definitely including Maualuga) and great intangibles. Moreover, he has the size that we covet on the edge. Matthews will need to bulk up, and unlike Shawn Crable it's not clear that his frame can bear the load.

I voted Barwin. With all i read about him and his potential. We better draft him somewhere along the line.

I like Barwin the best therefore I voted for him. However Matthews is in my top 5 at 3-4 OLB so he's a pretty good prospect as well.

Mathews is the lowest risks between the 2. Why? Because he has actually played the position.

I actually have him as Tedy's replacement rather than Mike's. With him and Mayo that would be an awesome pair of ILB's and Guyton could swing to OLB.

As long as both of them stay ranked in the 20's the Patriots have the ammo to get both. Now that would be a happy day.

I think Guyton has no chance at OLB.

I am going with Barwin. I think their college careers are comparable as pass rushers. From interviews I have seen, about equal on the abilty to walk and chew gum scale. So I will go with the better combine numbers.

"Prefers to run around blocks rather than take them on. While he improved as the year went on, remains a work in progress in disengaging from blocks."

Yeh, he sounds just like Tedy and Ted.

Though I grant you his rookie haircut would be most interesting...so, does Clay Jr. replace the void in your heart ever since the Jesters stole Ghoslton?

I had to really think about it On the real tho they're both binky-worthy, I'm just having a hard time finding a downside to B-man

I love his versatility for the Pats, I love his lack of an injury history, he's a big boy, he sounds intelligent and well-spoken, he did well at the combine...I dunno, what's not to like.

My only fear is that someone else (like Miami) will scoff him up, in which case I'll have to dig up a negative just to make myself feel better.

His hearing issue could be a positive in noisy stadiums; from his interview it sounds as though he's compensated for any difficulty with better peripheral vision, careful lip reading, etc, all stuff that could become assets in many circumstances.

Anyway he's my choice; there's just too much to like and not enough to dislike.

Now, you know that last year that I had no true love. I dated a lot and was fond of many, but 10 days before the draft I gave my heart to Mayo. The year before it was Patrick Willis.

Now your quote from NFLDRAFTSCOUT can be offset by just the opposite statement form Nolan a Pro Football Weekly.

I see a smear campaign againts Matthews from the Barwin cultist. While us Matthews supporters have nothing but kind words Barwin ( too bad he can't hear them)

We are taking the high road.:gossip:

It's true, binkying on Barwin doesn't make Matthews a bad prospect. I actually really like him, I just don't see him as #23 value, in large part because he's only 240 lbs. (And BB passed on Lawson, a more productive 240-pounder, around the same spot in the draft.)

Matthews is obviously a great prospect, but I agree that his size is the #1 concern for how he would fit on the Pats. I had considered both of them if they were available, with Matthews moving inside to SILB. but earlier threads discussing that issue seemed to disfavor Matthews' ability to play SILB compared to English or Sintim.

ok....lets do some comparisons......

experience: advantage goes to matthews although they each have the same amount of starting experience on defense

physical: barwin is a bit bigger, stronger, and faster but most of the numbers were pretty close........my big difference here is that barwin is naturally bigger while matthews had to work himself to get to his size...credit goes to matthews for doing the work, but a) there's alot of that size enhancement over the career of USC LB's b) I'll take the guy who was pretty much born with it....I would be concerned with matthews as he would need to get bigger to be effective in the manner a first rounder should be.....he might already be maxed out

scheme: barwin stood up for quite a few plays while at DE meaning he has the ability to read........but also has experience with his hand on the ground and has proven to at least have a chance against an OL 1-on-1......matthews does not engage blocks well and could be solved by a TE where barwin looks to be already beyond the normal abilities of a TE.....

misdirection is a weakness for matthews as he overpursues and gets taken out of plays.......one of barwin's strengths is the ability to read things like reverses and bootlegs.

right now, I think the only weakness barwin has is lack of experience in coverage.........but that said, he's got plenty of time at TE and stands to understand route reading pretty easily

as for special teams, their values seem to be about equal

I already like barwin better if they were available at the same pick...the idea of getting barwin at 34 is a no brainer versus matthews at 23.....in my opinion

And you only came over to Mayo because I'd been touting him and you finally started reading the many criticisms of Gholston and panicked. Nawrocky knows 3-4 like you know Playmate of the Month, he's seen pictures.
