I like how Rowe progressed in our defense, and I think the Jones' duo might make a decent 2nd year jump. That may make Butler expendable NEXT year. Can't afford to give him up this year.

Am waiting to see the whole picture unfold before making any judgement. Either way it tells me Butler is gone this year (inside info on RFA deal or trade) or next year when you either have to franchise or pay him.

Why not? It is a passing league, often playing in nickel. Having two corners is pretty much necessary.

I think what Karen means is that the Pats may be loading up for what appears to be a tough gauntlet next year. Not that they are making moves because of it.

I just don't understand why they wouldn't offer Butler the 14 million. Unless he's demanding like 16 or something crazy.

I kinda understand. We probably get a top CB duo for next year, and then the Pats have a decision to make. (Maybe next year we have another salary cap raise, so we can keep both.) And if some team takes away Butler, we are getting a first round pick.

If the team decided to sign Butler now on a long term, Pats wouldn't be able to get Gilmore.

I would like to see Butler extended in first place, but it didn't happen, and it won't this season.

We simply have to trust our front office. They know what they are doing.

If all this turns out to be is feeling Gilmore is a better corner and giving him the contract butler would have demanded you get the bonus of either both for the year with butler costing less than 4 mill or an extra first round pick which would replace the stolen one.

I think that is exactly what BB is thinking.

I think Malcolm's days here are numbered.

Because that's not how the Patriots have been operating in the last decade+.

They obviously don't want to be a top heavy team and putting close to 30m into two players (or 41m into three players including DMac) in the same position group is pretty bad cap management that puts pressure on draft picks working out to fill the gap in depth.

Butler is gone either this or next year.

Ryan Hannable had an interesting suspicion -- Butler and NE #1 (#32 overall) for Cooks and NO #2 (#42 overall).

Hannable can keep his suspicion.. That would be a bad move by the Pats, in all honesty. That's essentially trading 2- first round picks for Cooks and New Orleans 2nd.. Cooks is NOT that good of a player.

Would be crazy to think that just a year ago we talked about the big four.......Chandler Jones, Dont'a Hightower, Malcolm Butler, and Jamie Collins and having constant discussions of who you spend the money on, who you let go

That's what I'm thinking. It's too hard to predict what's about to happen but the Gilmore signing has left me with doubts about Butler's future. Would not be surprised if Logan is the one brought back and Malcolm traded.

Losing both Butler and Ryan downgrades our secondary despite the addition of Gilmore. I feel one of the two is sticking around.

People are acting like Cooks is prime Randy Moss. We should let Ryan go and keep Butler/Gilmore as the best duo in the league.

The Butler speculation is because it's believed he's at an impasse with the Patriots and most likely won't be re-signed. I really like Cooks but I would rather see them sign Butler long term, I just don't see them tying 30 million a year up on two corners. So if Butler is not going to be signed getting either a Cooks or a 1st round pick for him makes a lot of sense, especially with this draft absolutely loaded at both safety and corner. I love Butler but they still have to make the smartest moves, and that appears to be what they are doing. Ultimately it's hard to see the Patriots losing as they can end up with both Butler and Gilmore, get a first for Butler( unlikely) as an RFA, or swap Butler for Cooks and get an exceptional WR in return for Butler. If they do get rid of Butler they can fill his spot with a high pick in this draft. All in all things are looking good, losing Hightower would be the biggest negative but I'm hoping that won't happen.
