If Moses retires, these may be one-year options.

Shula.

I think the only one even close to Bill is Reid. Closing in on 300 wins and has 3 super bowls and took two teams to a Super Bowl.

Respect to Shula even though f him. And respect to all the others like Walsh or Lombardi they are close too but they just obviously don't have the chance to pass him like Reid does. And even still Reid has a ways to go still. I've been thinking about this a lot the last few weeks and unless some other QBs/teams really step up their game then I actually think Reid and the Chiefs might pass us. They are halfway and the competition in the league isn't good enough right now to see this stopping anytime soon. It doesn't take much but they are a wagon right now.

I don't think Walsh gets enough love for greatness. Changed the league.

Belichick's and Shula's careers stack up pretty similarly side by side. Both enjoyed runs of about 20 years of greatness, and about combined 10 years of mediocrity.

The best arguments Shula has going for him that is that he would have had 15-20 more wins had he coached 16 game seasons his whole career, and the lack of a true bottoming out season like the '23 Patriots. However his teams never came close to the prolonged domination of the Belichick Patriots. Shula's teams were more like the Steelers of 2001 on, forever in the mix, but usually third fiddle in the conference.

Shula obviously has the wins but only got over the hump once in all his years coaching. I think Walsh should be up there too. He was the GM and won multiple super bowls and also helped to majorly impact the game with the west coast offense. As for Reid I don’t think he coaches long enough to pass Bill in wins. He is already in his mid 60's and isn't in particularly great shape but I am sure it is tempting to keep doing it when you have the best quarterback in the league.

Shula's twilight began in 1975.

Quite honestly, I can't believe how much the guy skates by without being criticized for winning only 2 championships - and yes, I said "only 2 championships". He was a HC for 33 years. If the Super Bowl winner (or NFL champion during those 3 years he coached before there was a Super Bowl) was simply a randomly selected team, you'd mathematically expect him to have 1.3 (based on how many teams there were in the League in any given year of his tenure).
And Shula* and the Doofins* cheated to get those two SB wins. They paid the highest fine ever (at the time) and lost a 1st round pick for tampering to get Shula. Sound familiar?
The Doofins cheating led directly to their 2 SB wins, including their undefeated season.
The Pats meanwhile were fined for violating a memo and the clowns wanted to diminish 3 SB wins retroactively from 6 years before.
Funny how all of that worked out.

As for the best HC I'd take Lombardi. His .900 playoff winning % and 5 titles in 10 years seals the deal for me. The only thing that stopped him was cancer.

I think Lombardi is the only HC in league history to be part of the team HOF’s/Ring of Honor for two different teams- Packers and Redskins/Commanders

Bill has 6 rings as a head coach, and this discussion is about head coaches, not coaching careers. Reid has 3, and is unlikely to pass Belichick, but it’s not impossible. And the Chef’s didn’t get lucky with Mahomes, they targeted him and traded up for him. It’s far easier to make a case that the Patriots got lucky with Brady than it is the Chef’s got lucky with Mahomes. The Patriots passed on Brady until the 199th pick.

Where ownership lives is irrelevant, they are all billionaires with multiple residences, and why would anyone in their right mind live in Kansas City anyways?
I hear that the steak is great.

Too bad he wouldn't get a colonoscopy.

I use to say BB. but it has become clear to me more and more that it was mostly due to Brady allowing BB to spend so much on D while still producing and sometimes even winning with offensive comebacks. And the history of BB post and pre Brady is pretty damning unfortunately. Of course every coach needs QBs to win but it shouldn't have looked as bad as it did and he shouldn't have lost the locker room and pulse on the team like he did. Brady just allow so many of BB's ego problems which would otherwise sink him to be swept under the rug cause he commanded so much respect and was such a good leader. BB is still a top coach of all time, but not the GOAT IMO.

I might say neither and put in Bill Walsh.

I have a hard time arguing that BB or any other coach is the sports and cultural icon that Vince Lombardi was. The trophy is named after Lombardi for a reason….

I put BB on the top tier of coaches along with a few of his peers. Plenty of arguments for and against each of them as GOAT with no clear winner to me.

Unfortunately yeah his legacy isn’t what it was after seeing the team crater the last few years. It was Brady that gave us the 20 year run and the dynasty. He was the offensive mind that BB just isn’t. There’s no way that nonsense like Matt Patricia offensive coordinator would have seen the light of day if Brady was here.

There's only one guy on this list above who is ranked first or second in every category.

He won 31 playoff games, the next closest won 9.
For me, playoff win percentage is the equalizer. Vince.

It’s Belichick. 6 SB wins as a head coach in the salary cap/free agency period. You look at some coaches, pre salary cap and free agency, and they had their some of their same guys sometimes 10 years in a row.
