Bench Newton!

It's pretty clear that there was an agreement between Bill the Coach, Bill the GM, and Newton the quarterback...come here, sign my cheap *** contract offer for one year and you'll play 16 games barring injury. Newton gets his 16 games to try to look good and hopefully get another contract elsewhere and Bill the GM gets his cheap contract. And people don't forget, at the time he signed his contract, the NFL was seriously discussing 50% capacity league-wide, so Krafty Bob surely wanted Newton to put fannies in the seats, sell merch and hopefully provide some excitement in the post Brady era...

Bill already said he is starting on Sunday vs Miami. He was emphatic about it. Cut off Mike Reiss mid-question and said "Cam is our QB."
Is that true?!? Ugh, I can't take it anymore. What's the point? There is no logic or team-first sense. Which proves it must be what I said on another thread - it's political, from Kraft, all about optics.

Nothing to do with optics.

But it does tell you all you need to know about Stidham's future with the team. Which has exactly 3 games remaining in it.

I wouldn't mind seeing Cam stay as a specialized QB or wildcat role like Tebow did for the Jets. If the team wants to design plays for it.

Pats must find two QBs who can pass though. A bridge guy to be our starter, and then a draft pick. Hope they do.

Not a bad idea for short yardage , thats one of the things he’s actually good at. Maybe if we grab a blue chip prospect and don’t need any other spots at qb other than stidham (pretty sure he’ll be briught back at least another year). But if we’re taking the cheap route again and bringing in veteran reclamation options or whatever rather not him take up a spot.

It's highly likely they keep him next year. They had 3 qbs this year. Most likely jettison hoyer, draft a QB high and hopefully sign a "bridge qb"

Cam is not the answer.. why play him and be stubborn about it.. we are not making the playoffs .. how do you decide stidham is so bad based on second team reps. And the he looked much better than cam yesterday in the limited time he was there. The throw to asiasi was actually good. If there was a veteran TE they would have caught it... And maybe the stats look different..

But Bb stubbornness really stumps me. The only reason I see Book playing cam is he might have given a word that he will ensure cam gets all other bonuses because of the low base salary. No other logic comes to my mind. And bill is known for treating veteran players well.

Enough of putting sridhar in the doghouse. Let us know how good/ bad he is on game day. What do we get by playing newton?

We are not going to win with newton...

I'm not sure what the reason is either but I hope we find out someday.

Do you know how many backup QB’s we had that never got 1st team reps, that never saw meaningful play time, that we ended up just discarding and that was the end of their career? You act like Bill needs first team reps to do some to make an assessment he’s made many times over in his career. He’s drafted over 10 QB’s since he’s been here.

The starter not performing well doesn’t all of sudden make the back up good
Based on what.. at least when he played yesterday or the prior game he looked much more comfortable in pocket than cam.

What makes you thiNk he stinks when he has not even been given a proper chance and first team reps...
When he played yesterday he got sacked twice like Cam was all night, he didn’t make any of the deep passes Cam made earlier in the game, he had one drive stall out after 7 plays despite starting on the 30 because on 4th down receivers couldn’t get separation, then went three and out. He made one decent dump off pass....

Bill has clearly made his decision on Stidham and it's not a favorable one. It's done. The reason doesn't matter to me all that much.

No matter what, we'll probably have much more promising QB's on the roster next year.

And the defense clearly had it's foot off the gas.

In the Chiefs game in 2014 the same was true - and Jimmy looked a lot better than Stid looked.

This is such a flawed argument. Don't you see the difference between operating a game plan from the beginning of a game, vs coming in the last 5 min down 3 TD's?? Defense's play the pass and rush the QB in that situation - and the Rams are one of the best at doing that. So, can't compare his 2 sacks. And he was obviously given plays to try to move the chains with dink and dunk, he wasn't told to throw hail mary's. From what I've seen (KC game), Stid would have done better starting this game than Cam. Teams just don't fear Cam's arm at all, but he can't see or react well enough to consistently get anyone the pass.

The bridge (doubt it will be Cam) will start, and depending on who the draftee is he'll be ready to be plugged in when the time comes. I think Hoyer has a better chance of being QB3 than Stid does based on his knowledge of the system.

Stidham played awful in the KC game and everyone on here said if Cam played we would have won

Why can’t we just take Belichick at face value on this in that he doesn’t think Stidham is worth being a starter. If every QB deserves a chance at starting why didn’t we just sign Etling in the off season and give him the chance we never did.

Not every guy shows enough to be worth putting in that role. Even if the guy ahead of him isn’t that good

The Early Bird, Little Billy, Skippy & Cant are all damn lucky there won't be any fans in the stands for the final two games...

As for the next 3 games, why can't Stid & Cant split reps, same as NO has done with Brees & Hill? I realize that the talent levels are incomparable, but it's one of the few things they haven't tried yet...

The reason for me is I want to have hope. You cannot win consistently in the NFL without a good QB. Watching Cam has become painful for me. If Stidham is worse, then we are missing an essential ingredient this year and there is no hope of having a successful offense.

Here's my boiling hot take..

We are looking at the sad end of part 1 of Newton's career. His legs aren't what they used to be, injuries have further degraded his throwing mechanics, and he has been unable to adjust and figure out how to play good football.

He comes back next year on another cheap 1-yr deal (maybe we draft a qb early, maybe we don't) and so begins part 2 of his career. His body recovers a bit over the course of the off season, he better learns his physical limitations, he better learns the offense, and he is able to clean up his mechanics a bit. He runs the offense a lot more like we were accustomed to seeing with the goat and plays decent enough to earn a 3 year, midrange contract with us which he plays out as a top 12 qb.

I’d start Cam vs Miami, and if we lose, maybe throw Cam on IR and ride out Stidham. Cam is hurt anyways. Least we can put the Stidham talk to bed if he stinks vs Buffalo and NYJ.

Some have speculated that Bill wants to make sure that Cam hits as many of his contract incentives as possible but the only additional incentives that he can hit are playing time bonuses, which only increase by 250K at each level (unless they make the playoffs and that went bye-bye last night).

I kind of wonder if continuing to start Newton is about keeping the rest of the players motivated. He’s clearly a leader and liked by his teammates. Bill is still coaching and trying to improve the rest of the roster and develop a winning culture.
I can’t imagine any player is motivated by watching the guy playing the most important position on your team suck worse than they’ve ever seen anyone suck.

Why in the world would you play that piece of trash against Miami?
I would seriously consider benching him and going to a wildcat offense if he was the only QB we had.
This is the worst player to start 10+ games for the patriots in the belichick era.
