Bedard: There was second guessing about Mayo over summer and him getting a second year isn't guaranteed

1) Kraft made a commitment to Mayo, obviously a terrible idea. He wanted to keep Mayo here while also keeping Bill's son.

2) Kraft fulfilled that commitment

3) Then, the Kraft's promoted Wolf to be above Mayo and essentially to report to the family.

4) I would be shocked if Wolf didn't get approval for his off-season plans with the Kraft's (more than once).

AND NOW?
There is not a lot to do anytime soon. However, the team COULD make McAdoo an interim coach and also hire the jets coach as an Advisor
For The Defense or simply as DC. We got a wakeup call when the jags ran 18 times in a row without the patriots being able to do anything.

Covington was totally useless in reacting to the running game (for the 3rd? game). My gut tells me that the secondary coaches would have done better than Covington. We didn't want to lose Covington, so we promoted him to the level of his total incompetence.

I also suspect AVP doesn’t report to Mayo. Which makes you wonder what he’s actually coach of?
If AVP doesn't report to Mayo, then there would be little disruption if Mayo and Covington go and Saleh comes on board as DC, with McAdoo as the interim coach.

It's coming out in dribs and drabs, but signs are pointing to Mayo being little more than a figurehead/team media spokesman. No Xs-Os expertise worthy of his post, no input on game planning. All just because RKK fell in love with the guy's personal profile and decided not to interview HC candidates. It's beyond outrageous.

Mayo as a media spokesman for the patriots is beyond sad. He should be trained at corporate headquarters with regard to how to deal with the media.

If Mayo is a figurehead, then Covington is on his own running the Defense, developing defensive game plans and making defensive decisions during the game. That would certainly explain a lot.

I heard him interviewed by Zolak before Sunday's game and it sounded like he was giving away the defensive game plan -- "Don't be surprised if you see us playing two safeties in the box" on such and such situations. It was dumbfounding he would share that kind of thing.

Today on 98.5 Bedard more or less said that's the case. He said Mayo (or SOMEONE) needs to step in with a firm hand and start making adjustments. If not, players inevitably will lose faith in the coaches' ability to put them in position to win.

Who do you guys think can do so much better with the current roster? They have a lot of building to do, firing Mayo would be just dumb at this stage. Even the great BB didn't win much with this roster and he had the guys who are now hurt playing.

Mayo will keep his job unfortunately. What will happen is both coordinators will be fired. This will be a bill O'Brien type scenariom
They can’t just fire the coordinators. There isn’t a coach in the league that would take a coordinator position under Mayo after seeing what a disaster he is as a HC. Particularly knowing the job would very likely be one & done.

I don't disagree with that at all. Joe Gibbs winning 3 superbowls with 3 different mediocre QBs might be the most impressive coaching feat in the NFL history.
Gibbs definitely has his own unique HoF story but even with Brady as his QB I still think winning 6 is the most impressive coaching feat. It's just a number that so far exceeds the rest that it ends debates.

What a convenient excuse the roster is for CEO & coach “It’s not my fault” Mayo. I wonder how many years Mayo’s water carriers will use that excuse.

I can think of one coach that would have this team winning the AFC East, this year, with Drake Maye. Too bad Kraft decided to fire him last year because he fell in love with Jerrod Mayo for leading a prayer group in Israel.

There were plenty of injuries last year too. And most any year really. Detroit lost Hutch is that an excuse for them to only win one game the next 7 weeks?

It's not all player personnel, good coaches can make chicken salad from chicken sh*t. I have no doubt at all this team would be 3-4 -- maybe even 4-3 -- with an experienced coach like Vrabel at the helm. Vrabel worked wonders with bad rosters in Tennessee. Seattle and Miami should've been wins.

That is one of the dumbest things written in this forum in quite some time. The almighty Belichick was 4-13 last year. You think they go from 4-13 to division champs simply by adding Maye (which assumes Belichick actually drafts Maye, which is probably not happening)...? As Henry Hill said....

I'm not in love with Mayo, it just seems like a Jets move to fire a first year coach with a bad roster. First of all, Mayo has a 10 million buyout, he isn't going anywhere, if he doesn't turn things around, I'll have my pitchfork out like the rest of you guys, but not yet.

Definitely too soon. I mean if he can somehow get 4 wins the rest of the way it would be more wins than last year. That seems like a large number but if Maye keeps playing well things should have a way of evening out.

Not sure how anyone could seriously believe Mayo would be safe if they lose out. They had a **** ton of money to spend and high draft picks, yet do worse?

Mayo’s goal is to match Bill’s 2023 win total to stay safe.

Promote McAdoo to be the interim coach and hire a Defensive equivalent of McAdoo's current job (one who could take over as DC if necessary). Saleh comes to mind.
====================
Mayo is a negative. We would be better by subtraction if he were to go.

You're smokin' the good ****. Bill wouldn't have them winnning the afc east with Maye because Bill wouldve never drafted his ass.
