Bedard: There was second guessing about Mayo over summer and him getting a second year isn't guaranteed

This is Wolf leaking that Mayo is getting canned in a few weeks if he doesn't fix this ****.
Please, please, please be right, and don't be wrong.
We have all the makings of a bad dysfunctional organization. Just don't ruin my goddamn quarterback.
With the way he's played within this ****storm, I might think he is unruinable.

The real danger is he gets wasted.

This is not all on Mayo.

This is on the Krafts.

If you end up firing your new coach after one year, you're a bad owner and you don't know what you're doing.

What makes this even worse is that Mayo has not actually had the support he needed to succeed.

He doesn't have great coaches on the offensive side, the front office shot blanks in free agency, and Mayo himself compounded the drop in team culture with his public pronouncements and touchy feeling Pete Carrollish rah-rah routine.

Mayo is going to be a convenient scapegoat, but I will never be convinced he wouldn't have succeeded as a coach if he actually had proper support and also proper seasoning. It is Mayo's fault at the end of the day because he's a coach who can be scapegoated and he went into this situation willingly pushing out his old coach.

Bottom line: this is Kraft's failure.
You can do a bad job and fail with good people surrounding you or with bad people surrounding you, but you still need to be judged on the job you do.

Ill take it as good news if its true that mayo isn’t bulletproof, he shouldn’t be.

Im still willing to give him a chance but so many red flags so far. Mostly the lack of accountability, throwing the team under the bus and saying the x’s and o’s were fine. I thought the guy was a leader, but so far its the total opposite of what i expected there.
If he loses the locker room down the stretch they will need to move on. The team MAY have a few bad apples now but last year the locker room overall seemed to be in a good place despite the awful year.

He's playing exactly like his college tape - he's a very slow reactor which isn't going to cut it in the NFL. I don't see him doing a 180.
It also seems like since he was drafted, neither Bill nor Mayo know where to play him. SS? LB? No one on the Team seems to know.

Also, I feel like it’s worth mentioning - this team has been absolutely rocked with injuries to a ridiculous degree. You might be wondering, is their strength and conditioning coach doing a bad job? Who is in charge of the team being in good shape?

Oh, right, it’s Jerod Mayo’s brother, Deron Mayo. “Head Strength & Conditioning Coach”. Previously the assistant coach until his brother became the HC and he got a promotion to run that show too due to family relation. Now everyone’s hurt.

The blame mostly goes to players wearing smaller pads so they can play faster. The game is faster but the risk of injury is higher.

Cronyism. It has PLAGUED this team now for years.

If this is true, they need to already have someone in mind. If they don't, this will create more chaos and draw this out. Canning a first year HC after half a season is no way to start a rebuild. I get that people are unhappy with the results so far (yours truly included). What did they honestly expect? To be undefeated? JFC, BB, GOAT HC, was not turning things around and he had what, 5 years of trying to do so? If this happens, they have to bring in a known commodity like Vrabel or Kingsbury and not take a flyer on someone who is "such a great guy and teammate" and a virgin at HC. As much as I hate losing, I really hope the leash he is on is not this short. Also...if Mayo is gone, is everyone else going to be purged later on?

Agreed. Dude is a different breed, and took me a minute to see it. He won't be wasted, he will get the help he needs this offseason.

I think they expected a tighter ship. Coming from a former team captain and I believe green dot holder for the defense, stuff shouldn't be that bad. The guy is literally saying one thing one day, the opposite the next. That will send any company into a tailspin because you won't know which way is up.

Doing the Mayo is no way to lead a business. I agree it's not a great to can a guy halfway through a season but you could slide McAdoo into the HC spot for the rest of the season. Mayo wasn't ready and it is becoming clearer and clearer everyday.

You Belichick haters are hilarious always coming up with some weird, out there angle to discredit everything BB has done.
I don't hate Belichick and I fully acknowledge him as one of the GOATs alongside Bill Walsh and others. I just can't think of a time he did something amazing as a coach without having LT when he was DC or when he had Brady at QB.

If you bring up missing the playoffs with Matt Cassel, just remember Todd Haley made the playoffs with Matt Cassel.

I want Mayo to succeed and if he does i would credit Belichick for Mayo's success for being part of his coaching tree.

You all blamed McDaniels, Patricia, Flores, and Mangini for failing to succeed because they tried emulating Belichick too much and now deride Mayo for not doing it. Again it's pure comedy gold the way you Belichick fans act and debate.

Man, who could have predicted this loose power structure of neither Wolf or Mayo being in charge being a problem?

Agreed, McAdoo is on staff and can be an interim HC for half a season.

I tend to agree it would be hard to go to a “first time” coach again after this, but Ben Johnson is probably the exception. He’s really been brushing up for a long time and has passed on opportunities for a couple years now to stay in Detroit.

Wouldn't it raise a red flag to not hire a BB disciple when the rest of them have all failed badly except for Bill O'Brien who had moderate success for a few years in Houston before imploding?

I don't like seeing guys cut in front of the line for promotions without merit. Mayo is that guy and it's not shocking he's been a disaster. He wasn't even a good LB's coach. That's like hiring Troy Brown for HC when the WR's have been a problem since 2018.
I wasn't a fan of Mayo getting the HC job, especially since it was clear Belichick's philosophy wasn't working anymore. If Kraft fired Belichick for failing, why hire one his coaches who couldn't earn the DC role as HC.

As a Pats fan I'm hoping Mayo succeeds and I would love to see someone from Belichick's coaching tree succeed.

But actively rooting for the guy to fail because Belichick was fired is lame and in turn only makes Belichick look worse. That's what I find funny. Belichick fans should be rooting for Mayo to succeed.

I’m 90% sure Wolf outranks Mayo, but Mayo was here before Wolf. Wolf didn’t choose Mayo and probably realized by middle of training camp that it wasn’t going to work out.

Yep, if what he is doing with Goff is any indication, what he would do with Maye might be off the charts. Maye in two games has proven he can do the following A) go through his progressions quickly B) after doing so, make the right decision on what to do almost 100 percent of the time. C) He can run the no huddle. D) Diagnose the pressure pre snap E) Understand what to do with the ball pre snap. F) Know what to do with the ball post snap.

Thats the stuff that elite QBs can do. Put Maye in offense where guys are getting open left and right, he might throw 60 TDs. I haven't seen someone that I have been as impressed with so early as I was with Brady. Maye has some Brady traits..or at least stuff that makes me go hmmmm this might end up being something really really good.

Or maybe he realized he failed to improve the roster and left Mayo trash to work with and started to build the case against Mayo to save his job as GM.

I think you are right about their expectations. But to think that BB could not right the ship after 4+ years yet somehow a cherry HC will solve things, is a bit of wishful thinking. The ship was listing port side almost to the deck, and somehow, the newbie HC will get that leak plugged and water pumped out and get it righted. They must have had a LOT more faith in Mayo than BB at the time. And for those of you thinking I'm a BB ball washer or even a Mayo ball washer....I'm a TEAM ball washer. =) I would hope they give him more time. Now if things are going the same way, 1/4 of the way through next year? Definitely time to let em go. It's looking more and more like Mayo's time as an Exec at Optum isn't helping out here. Wonder what his day-to-day looked like there.
