According to Vrabel Maye follows the play and checkdowns as they are called, and he said this repeatedly last season. So if people have an issue with the checkdowns it's with MacDaniels.

You really think a checkdown is a product of Josh McDaniels? Disagree. Every play that's designed has a checkdown. My point is that Drake does not want to take the check down. He's always looking to make a play down the field. That is not a Josh McDaniels thing. If it was, when did Tom Brady have the same issue? Tom was the best at getting the ball out of his hands quickly. And can we stop quoting what coaches say? There is such a thing called coach speak for a reason. To use that as some kind of justification that he's checking the ball down efficiently is quite the leap. Have you watched Drake play at all in college? I would imagine the answer is no because he was exactly the same way in college. This is not a Josh McDaniels issue. This is a Drake Maye issue. I love Drake. He's a great quarterback, but it's okay to say that he needs to get the ball of his hands a little quicker when the pocket is collapsing. There's a reason why sacks are often considered a quarterback stat.

He is, but he's only taking shots more than 10 yards past the sticks about 10 times a game.

I'd like to see a better short passing offense.
I don't want him to stop chucking it, because he's phenomenal, but the field is much bigger when doing both IMO

I think Maye’s completion stats are a little misleading. He has a high completion percentage so at first glance it seems that means trying to throw the ball downfield is highly effective. But I haven’t seen any analysis of what the percentage is if you include plays when he wanted to throw deep and never got to throw at all because he was sacked or scrambling. Those are the plays that would benefit from a better short passing game.

Last year's offense looked very good on paper but if you dig into it a little bit I think a big part was how often they converted 3rd and long. Just off memory and feel it was way more often then normal or what should be expected. I felt more comfortable with 3rd and 10 then 3rd and 3. At least one of Diggs, Boutte, Henry, or Hollins was likely to be open on a 12 yard route and give Maye two shots at that he's completing one of them. A better short game doesn't put them in those gotta have it moments as often which is more sustainable
