Banks and King debate overtime

As I pointed out earlier in the thread, playing an entire extra period (non sudden-death) would lead to significantly more tie games as well, which you can probably add to the list of things the NFL wouldn't like about it.
That is very true.

But if that's the case then do away with OT during the regular season entirely, and play either a full period, or the suggestion that Dfresh429 had for playoff games.

I would just like to see them ban field goals in OT. Nothing angers me more than seeing a game won on a coin-flip advantage followed by a 42-yard field goal taken from the middle of the field.

At least get into the red zone for christsakes. The current system is like having a PGA playoff on the driving range.

57-43 is a huge difference.

Before they moved the kickoff, it was 51-49. Just move the kickoff back 10 yards in OT. Problem solved. 50/50 chance of winning.

I guarantee your stats are wrong. Because they don't list ties. My recollection is that before the kickoff was moved, it was 51-45-4 or so, that may not be exactly right but the idea is there.

I like the system the way it is now. I agree with Banks. But I would support moving the kickoff up to address the post-1994 change, in order to placate people by bringing the stats back into line. But anything else I don't like.

I don't agree with having each team touching the ball in OT. This isn't like baseball, where a team needs to be at bat to score. In football, any element of the team, offense, defense and special teams can score.

I think it should be left alone.

What's the percentages on defenses scoring first in overtime?
