There aren’t many players that draw the kind of public admiration that Troy Brown does from Bill Belichick.
So when rookie Bam Childress was compared to the Patriots’ do-it-all 13th-year player by the head coach, it was worth hearing.
“Similar to Troy Brown, he’s got the quickness, he has good hands, instincts. Tough kid,†said Belichick after yesterday’s 28-26 loss to the Dolphins. “He has been working hard over there. You know, in the defensive backfield we had a couple guys today that didn’t play, so Childress was on emergency duty.â€
Just like Brown has done. Just like Brown, Childress the defender lined up on slot receivers. Just like Brown, Childress lined up as a receiver. Just like Brown, Childress played on special teams.
And just like Brown, Childress came into the NFL in an inauspicious way.

“Just like coach says, ‘The more you can do, the better,’ †said Childress, who hasn’t played defense since practicing at the position as a redshirt freshman in college. “If I can go out there and play defense or offense or special teams or whatever it is, just to help this team win. It’s not about me, it’s about the team.
