D10 10:37 2:26 ATL 35 5 19 Punt

Score: 20; 23

Kickoff: Gramatica to 1 yd in the end zone, 31 yd return; tackle Poteat and Woods, penalty-offsides on Spann 5 yds.

m: 1st and 10
r: Naked bootleg, QB run, 9 yds.
o: WR each side, Flanker right, FB offset left-motion inside to I, then inching right.
d: 3-4, press coverage-CBs back off before snap;
DL Freeman, L.Smith, S.Thomas;
LB Woods, Roach, Alexander, Mincey;
CB Spann, V.Brown;
S G.Scott, Andrews.
b: Woods sets the edge on the Flanker; Freeman holds the line against RT/RG double-team; L.Smith battles with C and is knocked down by LT coming over to block LBs; Roach meets FB in the hole.
a: Atlanta ran a good fake, taking advantage of the inexperienced defenders; Mincey stayed home on the backside and forced the QB to run to the sideline to beat him around the corner, this allowed Andrews to get back over and Spann to come from across the field to pin him against the sideline where he stepped out trying to change direction.

m: 2nd and 1
r: Run, left side, 6 yds.
o: I formation, WR wide right, TE left, WR slot left-motion inside behind RT.
d: 3-4, press on both WRs before the motion.
b: Freeman and the RT battle laterally; Alexander gets locked up by the RG; L.Smith loses play side position to the C; Roach beats the LG outside and is doubled by the FB/LG; S.Thomas holds the line against the LT, but is tripped over the Roach/FB/LG pile; Mincey is driven 2 yds deep by the TE.
a: Freeman’s lateral pursuit got him there, wearing the fashionable Falcon RT cape, just as the runner came through the hole; Andrews filled the hole and split the tackle with Freeman.

m: 1st and 10
r: Pass, TE, crossing pattern, incomplete.
o: I formation, WR wide right, TE left, WR slot left-motion inside behind RT.
d: 3-4, press coverage.
b: Mincey is playing run against the LT; S.Thomas drives the RG into the backfield; L.Smith doubled by the C/RG; Freeman works against the RT started thinking run, then broke free outside to rush.
c: CBs in man, Roach came up for play action, hand checked the TE thinking he was blocking, then saw no ball and turned to chase the TE, he was several steps behind up the field when the ball got there; Alexander bit on the play action, and was just starting to chase the FB who had a huge lead in the flat when the ball went upfield; Andrews came up to help Roach (or was also responsible for the TE) and was in coverage when the pass was thrown.
a: Woods rushed off the edge and was in the QB’s hair as he threw; Ball was on the money, but Andrews had kept a springloaded shoe in reserve and launched himself to get an arm in front of the TE; Either Andrews knocked the pass down, or he disrupted the TE’s concentration for a drop - the announcers claimed a drop, but in slow motion it looks an awful lot like a knock down and Andrews is strutting a bit afterwards.

m: 2nd and 10
r: Run, left side, 4 yds.
o: WR slot each side, Flanker each side.
d: 3-4, soft coverage, SS up near ILBs.
b: Freeman hand sparred with RT, who released, then had to hand spar with RFlanker; L.Smith is engaged by the C, avoids the chop block by the RG, then is doubed by the RT; S.Thomas holds the line against a double-team by the LG/LT, though he is sealed inside by the LT’s position, until the L.Smith group runs into them and takes them all down; Mincey sets the edge on the Flanker.
a: Mincey set a hard edge and forced the runner inside (you can see him start outside then change his mind as he notices Mincey’s targeting systems lock on when he came out from behind the Flanker’s shadow); NFL.com credits Mincey with the tackle, but it looks like S.Thomas unwrapping himself from around the RB as they untangle, certainly Mincey was still outside when the RB hit that pile-up; The QB audibled to this call.

m: 3rd and 6
r: Pass, TE seam route, incomplete.
o: 3 wide, 2 right, TE left.
d: 4-2 nickel, press on slot right/wide left;
DL Woods, Klecko, L.Smith; Mincey; Poteat at nickelback.
b: Woods taken wide by the RT; Klecko doubled and taken wide by the C/RG; L.Smith checked by the LG; Mincey checked by the LT.
c: Man, LBs in zone.
a: It looks like the TE stone fingered the ball, but he also took a shot from Andrews that would have made him work for it anyway.

m: 4th and 6
r: Punt, 38 yds, downed at the 8.

Score: 20; 23

Just stopped by to check out the Thomas discussion... only to discover I only thought I saw the Atlanta game. Ho Lee Crap, Box... you don't take your football seriously or anything, do you?

Anyway, the back story is, I was directed here from another thread, where I opined that this is just a kick-butt draft class... and I stuck Thomas in the "not quite yet" category in terms of immediate contribution. Looks like the feeling is here, he's a keeper if not an immediate contributor -- though without ruling that out either.

After last night's Arizona game to add to what we got to see in Atlanta, I'm feeling pretty good that we might squeek out enough wins to challenge the annointed Dolphins for a shot at the AFCE title Failing that... I am now confident we have a better-than-average shot at a wild card!!!!

Tongue firmly in cheek of course. It's feeling better every day to be a Pats fan. Great work, Box... makes me feel like getting the dish, get the much larger TV or new glasses, and learning to work a DVR! Well, almost.

Can't wait to see what the Arizona breakdown yields.

Nah, football is just a hobby. On behalf of Pats1, myself, and our spiritual mentor Patsfan37, "y'all come back now, y'hear?"

O11 08:11 5:31 NE 8 16 80 Field Goal

Score: 20; 23

m: 1st and 10
r: Run, Cobbs, right side, loss of 3 yds.
o: E.Davis wide left, Rasby TE left, Mills slot right, Henry wide right, Cobbs RB;
OL Britt, Yates, Barthelmes, Stevenson, Hand
d: 4-3, SLB 2 yds of line outside TE, press on Henry, S in the box marking the slot.
b: Hand got on the inside shoulder of the RDE and fought him laterally right; Stevenson drove the RDT a couple yards upfield; Barthelmes never controlled the LDT, but he kept him occupied until the play was over and did get playside position to screen the RB; Rasby ole’d the LDE for Yates to pick-up and completely whiffed on LBs; Britt did a belly flop attempting to cut the MLB; Yates was knocked on his tail by the LDE; Mills locked up with the S upfield; Henry ran the RCB of the screen.
a: Cobbs had a crease in the ‘C’ gap, he was spooked by the LDE getting in so fast and chose to stop and change direction instead of accelerate through the hole - hard to tell with the TV angle, but it appeared he could have hit the jump jets and gotten through the hole ahead of the LDE’s charge; Hand and Stevenson had the door open with only the WLB to beat on his way upfield.

m: 2nd and 13
r: Pass, Mills, square out, incomplete.
o: E.Davis wide left, Rasby TE left, Mills slot right, Henry wide right.
d: 4-2 nickel, soft coverage.
b: Hand rode the RDE wide, partially lost the outside, but used the momentum of the RDE’s swing to drive him into the ground; Barthelmes had a good lateral fight with the RDT and eventually lost the right shoulder, but not before Cassel set and threw; Yates was bull rushed and was beaten inside, but not before Cassel set and threw; Britt and Rasby doubled the LDE.
c: Zone.
a: Cassel was a little late on his throw for Mills, who got the ball in his hands just as the DB hit his hands and gave him a love tap; A hand off to Cobbs running off tackle would have gotten at least half the distance needed, everybody dropped for the pass.

m: 3rd and 13
r: Pass, Cobbs, dumpoff underneath, 14 yds.
o: E.Davis wide left, Rasby TE left, Mills slot right, Henry wide right.
d: 4-2 nickel, Ss in the box, FS marking Mills, SS showing blitz, looks just like a 4-4.
b: Hand rode the RDE deep past the QB; Stevenson and Barthelmes stood-up the RDT, then Stevenson released to check backside for Hand; Rasby rode the LDE wide, but was being beaten outside; Britt and Yates stood-up the LDT, then Britt released to chase back and force the LDE to take a deeper angle.
c: Zone.
a: beautiful pocket, Cassel used it well, surveying deep, then stepping up and hitting Cobbs on a crossing pattern underneath the LBs; Cobbs scooted to the first down mark and out of bounds.

m: 1st and 10
r: Pass, E.Davis, sideline comeback, 15 yds.
o: Henry wide left, Rasby TE right, Mills slot left, E.Davis wide right.
d: 4-2 nickel, press on Mills, SS up to the line showing blitz.
b: D-line stunt-slant left to open the lane for the SS; Rasby picked up the SS; Britt rode the LDE wide until he spun back underneath and found himself walled away; Yates checked the LDT who also spun away and found himself walled away; Stevenson and Barthelmes outmuscled the RDT; Hand rode the RDE inside, but lost on a spin move back to the outside.
c: Man outside.
a: Nice pocket, plenty of time to survey the field; E.Davis ran a nice comeback and gained additional yardage with a nice spin move to throw the CB off his back.

m: 1st and 10
r: Run, Cobbs, right side, 11 yds.
o: Berlin wide left, D.Thomas TE right, Mills slot left, Musinski wide right-motion to slot right.
d: 4-2 nickel, soft coverage.
b: D.Thomas turned the RDE out; Hand and Stevenson doubled the RDT, Stevenson released and Hand finished turning him out; Stevenson drove the RLB left; Barthelmes drove the LLB left; Yates turned the LDT left; Britt rode the LDE into the backfield behind the play; Musinski blocked the SS out and screened him from the play as he pursued upfield; Mills screened the LCB; Berlin gave the FS a shot upfield and screened him from the play.
a: The RDE eventually overpowered D.Thomas enough to get back inside, but Thomas pushed him down from behind (legal within the tackle box); The RDT was able to twist away from Hand with both going down, he got a paw out to briefly slow Cobbs; Cobbs busted loose of the RDT’s grasp and powered up the middle for a first.

m: 1st and 10
r: Pass, D.Thomas, crossing underneath, incomplete.
o: Berlin wide left, D.Thomas TE left, Mills slot left, Musinski wide right-motion to slot right.
d: 4-3, OLBs on the line showing blitz, soft coverage.
b: Britt rode the LDE wide and deep; Yates and Barthelmes road the LDT wide; Stevenson stood-up the RDT; Hand stood-up the RDE (he broke free on the pursuit angle when Cassel was flushed, but he wasn’t going anywhere downfield); Cobbs picked up the blitzing WLB, but was beaten inside flushing Cassel from the pocket.
c: SLB man on D.Thomas.
a: Cobbs missed his block; Cassel opted to throw the ball away rather then risk a dumpoff to D.Thomas crossing underneath with the SLB at his back.

m: 2nd and 10
r: Pass, Mills, square out, 9 yds.
o: Berlin wide left, D.Thomas TE left, Mills slot left, Musinski wide right, Evans in at RB.
d: 4-3, OLBs online, WLB showing blitz, press on Musinski, soft on the right.
b: Britt rode the WLB wide and deep; Yates rode the LDE deep; Barthelmes stood-up the LDT and rode him left; Stevenson and hand rolled the RDT/RDE in together; D.Thomas marked the SLB who dropped into coverage, then joined Hand/Stevenson’s group.
c: Man, LB zone.
a: Good pocket, Cassel had time to survey things, Berlin cleared the left side and Mills came underneath behind him.

m: 3rd and inches
r: Run, Evans, right side, loss of 1/2 a yd.
o: I formation, Evans TB, Mills FB, Musinski wide left, Rasby TE right, D.Thomas Flanker right.
d: 4-3, Line shift left-RDT on nose, SLB online, RCB online outside the SLB, FS moving up to LB line (9 men in the box), soft coverage.
b: Barthelmes was beaten playside by the RDT; Yates and Britt blocked down collapsing the LDT/WLB; Stevenson met the MLB; Hand blocked down on the RDE; Rasby was overmatched by the SLB; D.Thomas moved the DB off the line; Mills engaged the SLB off of Rasby’s whiff.
a: The RDT penetrated the right ‘A’ gap off the snap, before Barthelmes could engage, he came in behind Mills lead block and wrapped up Evans in the backfield; The blocking scheme was ineffective leaving Barthelmes one-on-one with the DT lined up on Barthelmes right shoulder in a short yardage situation; An workable option would have been to take the cushion granted Musinski outside, 'one step and throw to a WR taking one step, turn and catch' had the first down - inexperience or audible restrictions.

m: 4th and 1
r: Pass, Mills, spuare out, 17 yds.
o: Berlin wide left, D.Thomas TE right, Mills slot left, Musinski wide right, Cobbs in at RB.
d: 3-3 nickel, press on Musinski, SS in the box.
b: D-line stunt left, MLB blitz; Britt rode the LDE wide; Yates and Barthelmes doubled the NT; Hand and Stevenson doubled the RDE; D.Thomas picked up the SLB, but was beaten inside; Hand released the double-team and picked up the blitz; Cobbs chipped the MLB, then released underneath.
c: Man, LB zone.
a: D.Thomas looked awful close to holding as he was beaten inside; Berlin cleared out the left side and Mills came underneath again.

To be continued...

...continued

m: 1st and 10
r: Sack, Cassel, loss of 1 yd - penalty, E.Davis Illegal Motion, 5 yd penalty.
o: Henry wide right, Mills slot right, E.Davis wide left-motion inward, Rasby TE left, Cobbs RB.
d: 4-3, SLB online outside TE, press on Henry, WLB 3 yds deep between slot and RT - moves up online showing blitz, FS 6 yds deep over slot.
b: Hand 'check punches' the RDE, then drops a little too late, but just enough in time to force the blitzing WLB a step wide of Cassel; Stevenson rode the RDE wide; Barthelmes, Yates, and Britt stood up the DTs and LDE, then rolled them in together; Rasby marked the SLB until he dropped into coverage, then released into the flat.
c: LB zone, CB man.
a: E.Davis curved back toward the LOS 1 step too soon; Cassel had Rasby open in the flat, but didn’t pull the trigger for some reason, he may have been too close to the Britt scrum, can’t tell from the angle.

m: 1st and 15
r: Run, Cobbs, right side, 4 yds.
o: Rasby TE right, D.Thomas Flanker right, Henry wide left, Musinski wide right-motion to slot right.
d: 4-3, SLB online over TE, SS in the box over Flanker, soft coverage.
b: Britt rides the LDE wide; Barthelmes stands-up the LDT and turns him left; Stevenson and Hand drive the RDT off the line and to the left; Stevenson releases and stands-up the WLB; Rasby meets the RDE each sliding to their knees with matched leverage; D.Thomas seals the SLB inside; Yates pulls and leads into the hole finishing off the RDE starting to rise; Musinski seals the RCB/SS out leaving Cobbs an open lane behind him.
a: Great blocks by D.Thomas and Musinski at the point of attack opened a big hole, the FS coming up quickly wrapped up Cobbs for a shot gain.

m: 2nd and 11
r: Pass, Mills, square out, incomplete.
o: Henry wide left, Mills slot left, D.Thomas right, Musinski wide right.
d: 4-3, SLB online outside TE, WLB 3 yds deep between slot and LT - shows blitz, soft coverage.
b: Hand takes the RDE wide and runs him into Stevenson’s block when he cuts back inside; Stevenson easily rode the RDT’s push; Barthelmes stood-up the LDT; Yates and Britt doubled the LDE; Cobbs nearly cartwheeled the WLB on his blitz, cutting his inside leg out from under him.
c: Man
a: Same basic play to Mills side, this time the MLB ran with him, making it a narrower window for Cassel, Mills got his hands on the ball, but it may have been a fingerwidth too far in front.

m: 3rd and 11
r: Pass, Cassel scramble, 15 yds.
o: Berlin wide left, Mills slot left, D.Thomas right, Musinski wide right.
d: 4-3, SLB online outside TE, WLB 3 yds deep between slot and LT - shows blitz, soft coverage.
b: The RDE trips over D.Thomas’ foot as he releases into his pattern and Hand does a good job of correcting his overbalance and pinning him to the ground; Stevenson rides the RDT into the RDE; The LDT and LDE run a twist; Barthelmes hands off the LDT slanting left to Yates and picks up the LDE coming behind the DT; Yates takes the LDT handoff and checks his progress; Britt hand punches the LDE to slow his stunt and picks up the MLB blitz; Cobbs squares up on the WLB blitz and doesn’t allow himself to be thrown off, he gets in another check before the LB can beat him inside.

m: 1st and 10
r: Pass, Mills, flare, 3 yds.
o: Berlin wide left, Mills slot left, D.Thomas right, Musinski wide right.
d: 4-3, SLB online outside TE, WLB 3 yds deep between slot and LT - shows blitz, soft coverage.
b: Britt tried to cut the WLB on his blitz and did force his hands down; Yates stood up the LDE; Barthelmes rode the LDT’s bull rush; Stevenson stood-up the RDT; Hand tried to cut the RDE, and got his hands down; Cobbs forced the SLB to check his rush and jump sideways; The MLB came on a delayed blitz unblocked.
c: Looks like a zone to keep the ball in front of the secondary.
a: Quick pass to the flat and try and make someone miss in the face of a full scale blitz.

m: 2nd and 7
r: Pass, Throwaway, incomplete.
o: Henry wide right, Mills slot right, E.Davis wide left, D.Thomas left.
d: 4-3, OLBs online showing blitz, soft coverage
b: The Gs and C tried to ole' their blocks; Britt and Hand each try to steer their men coming underneath them across the pocket and into each other; The OLBs came clean.
c: Zone
a: The Pats were trying to set up a screen left but the rush was too strong, Cassel reads the blitz and throws the ball into the dirt underneath the coverage.

m: 3rd and 7
r: Pass, Henry, slant, incomplete.
o: Henry wide left, E.Davis wide right, Rasby TE right, D.Thomas TE left - shift, Henry covers the tackle, D.Thomas to Flanker left-motion to Flanker right.
d: 4-3, SLB online outside Rasby, soft coverage.
b: Britt tried to cut the LDE; Yates and Barthelmes stood-up the LDT; Hand was beaten inside by a spin move from the RDE - but he ran into Stevenson riding the RDT outside.
c: Zone
a: Looked like Cassel was trying to throw a quick slant, either Henry ran it too shallow causing the ball to be low, or Cassel threw too low; it looked like the play was designed to get the 1st down first, with a TD for fun if the defense was slow.

m: 4th and 7
r: Field Goal, Gramatica, converted.

Score: 23; 23

Good God, that was a long drive.

We need some more of those this year.

One drive to go and this is wrapped up.

Excellent. I'm almost done converting the first half, and once I get some of Arizona under my belt I'll shift back to Atlanta, convert the rest, and hopefully Dave can post it.
