Asking price for Asante Samuel - 2 second round picks

If I were a team that needed CB's, I'd give up 2 2nds for him. He would have to restructure that deal though which probably wouldn't happen. He's not worth $9M a year or whatever the average was. But I'm sure some stupid team will take it, if they got a 2nd and DRC for a backup QB who's proven nothing.

He is one of the best ball hawking CBs in the league. Having said that, 2 2nd rounders for a 30 yr old is a bit high. But don't question his skills. He is always among the league leaders in INTs. Not an agressive corner, or a good tackler, but he is a true ball hawk.

He can't play press, can only play one side of the field and sucks at tackling. If you want flexibility on defense, he is not your guy. If you play bump and run, he's not your guy. He is a ballhawk, but a liability in every other aspect of a corner's game.

The Eagles do realise that not every team will be taken for a king's ransom, like they did with the Cardinals!

When they acquired both Rodgers-Cromarie and Asomugha everyone assumed they would make a trade. Instead they announce 'if someone wants to trade with us then they have to come to us.' They obviously want to trade him, but are grasping for straws for negotiating leverage, praying for someone's top corner to go down. I feel like they're used car salesmen, except they actually have a half-decent product to trade. I half-hope that Asante starts *itching about getting starting time, so he lowers the trade value. Normally I don't mind the Eagles.

Samuel did some great things for us but now we have an all around all-star Cornerback who can cover as good as anyone and tackle as well. To me, he will be one of those multiple probowl type talents that will be around for a long time. I seen him in the mold of a Ty Law rather than Assante. This guy in Devin McCourty has fantistic hops, great instincts, impeccable football intelligence, great patience and a knack for being around the ball all the time. His rookie season was no fluke, and is a huge piece to a hopeful Superbowl run. Like mentioned earlier, with Leigh Boden who is a very good and savvy veteran with good instincts... CB is no longer a need. Just need a little bit more from the back end (Meriweather to step it up) and everything is fine. The current star CB is better and will be better than any other CB New England has probably ever had since Hayes.

Ty Law has a pretty decent chance to make the HOF. The NFL HOF not just the Patriots HOF. If Devin McCourty becomes as good a player as Ty Law was. I will be estatic.

All I can see when I think of Asante is the ball bouncing off the top of his hands in SB42. Should have been game over.

TWO second rounders? LOL! AND you'll have to pay him too...

CHILD PLEASE.

From the article itself:

"Typical caveats apply, of course: This is imperfect data based on the game charting project, which means it comes off limited television camera angles. In past years, this data has been very inconsistent from year to year, and we're going to study that in the offseason to try to figure out if we can get more accurate numbers by, say, looking at players over two-year spans. (I wrote this last year as well, but this offseason we have, shall we say, "extra free time.")"

=========================================================================

Do those stats include all the times he jumped a route without any help over the top and then his guy runs for 20 yards? TV angles are not a good way to grade out DB's for every play, it is too limited.

The guy is a huge liability. And the Eagles thought he was so great that they went out and traded for a young CB with a huge upside unless he goes the way of Asante, and paid huge money to Nmadi. Is their perception reality?

Getting Nmadi and possibly trading Samuel is more about the Eagle's scheme change than about Samuel's play. Juan Castillo's defensive scheme calls for more aggressive CBs, which is not Asante's forte. (Not unlike the current transition underway with the Pats).

In a scheme where he is allowed to play off, and provides for safety help over the top, he is among the most effective corners in the league. But he has to fit that scheme to be effective. If a team does play in that fashion, he is a worthwhile pickup. If not, then he is not.

I wouldnt give up two 7ths for him.

2 2nds....LOL No wonder Pot is the drug of choice in the NFL.....

Dan Pompei: Belichick considering trading two 1st round picks for Samuel to send a message to the other future draft picks that he's not afraid to get rid of them.

I think in enumerating Samuel's faults people are ignoring his qualities. Assante Samuel is an an excellent CB who like most players has some limitations. IF Samuel did come back, he'd be an excellent addition, because BB, like he did before, would put him in position to emphasize his qualities and minimize his limitations.

I think if he stays in Philly, he'll be an interesting fit for their DC. In Aso and RCromartie, they have 2 big physical CBs. It would be a great luxury to have a superior ball hawk to be back there taking shots at the ball.

That being said, 2 2nds is ludicrous even if you didn't have to pay him a dime.

I also found it interesting that in all those stats from football outsiders, Devin McCourty's name never came up

All I keep seeing is that ball Eli Manning ( You know Eli M. who considers himself equal to Tom Brady, obviously there wasn't a urine test taken when he made that statement on ESPN Radio M&M) anyway typical EM throw that went threw Samuel's hands that could have LOCKED UP another Superbowl win. Few times he's done that, live & die by it IMO.

Bill is well aware of Asante's limitations. That's why he capped his value where he did. One of the many people who never was was Asante. He sees himself as a #1 playing only the LCB position. Bill doesn't have the kind of secondary field general at the safety position nor the pass rushers to allow for Asante's freelancing anymore. Neither it would seem does Philly. Which is why they went after Nnamdi and are dangling Asante.

The eagles are ridiculous.
