As a Super Bowl team we might have been expected to sign 1 of the top 50 FA's.

31 other were competing for free agents. Well, perhaps, a couple were so cap-tied that they couldn't.

How successful have the New England Patriots been in free agency thus far?

According to Sports Illustrated’s Eva Geitheim, Mike Kadlick and Karl Rasmussen, the Patriots’ additions of Alijah Vera-Tucker (No. 16), Romeo Doubs (No. 23), Kevin Byard (No. 26) and Dre’Mont Jones (No. 40) were all ranked among the top 50 free agent signings of 2026.
B-but I saw on Patsfans.com that this was the worst FA period the Patriots have ever had!

Cheep does not fit in this equation.

Pats have the best FB in the league though.

That's high praise for Vera-Tucker especially given that he typically only plays half a season due to injury. Maybe SI didn't include that reality in their rankings.

I think we'll be pleased with the pickups - especially Doubs

They spent 3x as much to get Jones (#40) than they would have to keep Chaisson (#35) but hopefully he's worth the extra money too

not the sexiest list but based off what I’ve seen since last March, this front office knows what theyre doing

A.J. will make it all worthwhile.

Who did we expect them to sign that they missed out on?

So. much. pre-season euphoria. How I feel about the Pats this year makes the irrational exuberance preceding the 2008 financial crisis look like Bill Belichick's disposition while passing a kidney stone. I am so irrational I'm like hold my beer, pi. And my pie too, if that were a thing.

Byard was the only solid signing. Doubs was pointless. AVT is extremely high risk and paid way too much money. He should be on a prove it deal. Jones is a journeyman and graded out poorly defending the run. Lateral move and it's wouldn't shock me if someone else emerges to take snaps from him.

Byard was a great signing. Compliments Woodson perfectly; not only from a play style/production standpoint, but also from a leadership/mentor perspective. Doubs is an underrated receiver. Most of it is due to Green Bay’s offensive system, but he was their best overall receiver during his tenure & will be a surprise for many here who aren’t familiar with his ability at all three levels; especially in the red zone. Also, while myself & many others want Boutte here, his situation is still anyone’s guess. Doubs would slide right into that role. Then you have the injury factor; so no..he’s not redundant. AVT (in theory) should be on a prove it type deal, but unfortunately, that’s not what the market dictates. He’s not a mediocre player when healthy; he’s an all-pro caliber player when healthy. Thus, we had to pay up……While KLC was a solid player for us, he’s been the definition of below average/average his entire career. He’s really only effective at rushing the passer & average at that. Others such as Barmore, Williams & Tonga took pressure off of him & made his job much easier…and he’s a liability against the run. Dre’Mont is equally (if not better) effective as a rusher & is much more stout against the run. We need a physical presence up front; he provides that in spades. PFF is missing the context of certain situations/personnel groupings etc that Jones was in last year. He’s simply a better player than KLC. We also attempted to trade for him at the deadline last year, so we know Vrabel & Co. coveted him to augment the D-line. He’s familiar with him as a player. I trust Vrabel. That being said….it may be hard to top last year’s FA signings; which was borderline historic haha, but this year’s crop has the potential to be excellent as well. We. Shall. See.

IVWT..

Last year, people were saying Milton Williams was grossly overpaid, asked who the hell was Khyris Tonga, Morgan Moses is too old and cannot stay healthy, Garrett Bradbury sucked and would be a turnstile, Chaisson was a bust who probably be at best a situational player, and Cory Durden was just a body for an empty roster spot who would likely be cut at some point.

I think Doubs could be far better than expect. Green Bay has a weird offense where they don't let any receiver shine. They are happy to have three or four receivers get 600-800 yards rather than having a 1,000 yard plus receiver. With AJ Brown taking the main focus of opposing defenses, I think Doubs can really shine.

AVT wasn't going to get a prove it deal. He is a potential All Pro guard when healthy. Yes, the when healthy part is key, but the potential All Pro was always going to make teams willing to pay. And he isn't really making that much money.

And the Pats were high on Dre'Mont Jones even last year trying to trade for him at the trade deadline (The Titans refused to deal him to the Pats because their owner hates Vrabel). He do pretty well when he went to the Ravens. And again, Chaisson was considered a lesser player than Jones is when the Pats signed him and he overperformed. Why can't Jones? If he does, it would be an upgrade.

The spent a first round pick and a future 5th for AJ Brown, besides that they did a great job spending on value free agents and not breaking the bank on overpriced trash.

Gonzo, Drake… sometimes the best free agent money spent is on your own players.

It's funny how the media's first words back in 08 were about a financial scandal but they were soon calling it a crisis.
