Have we been watching the same McCourty through 1 3/4 seasons? I would have said the complete opposite. He is starting to remind me of Darius Butler in man to man. I remember Butler would always be close to his man, but he did a poor job of locating and playing the ball in the air, and he always seemed to be just a half step behind.
Although McCourty seems to excel more in zones, he used to be a better man corner. His strength is getting up on the line and putting his hands on the receiver. This allows him to compensate for not being extremely instinctive in his reaction. The fact that Bill rarely allows press man infuriates me and works against DMac. Perhaps weak safety play has contributed to this philosophy.
Kyle Arrington isn't complaining though.

By no means am I saying you're wrong, I happen to agree that he can play press coverage, however most of his best work (going from memory) in 2010 was playing zone and them moving onto the receiver. After additional film study, via youtube, I would have to say that you are correct, as it pertains to this year. Last year, McCourty did well to get his hands on and reroute the WR within the first 5 yards. For example, these 2 great plays, one on Jackson and one on Calvin Johnson. See this clip at 00:25 and 01:01 (please excuse the terrible music). In both cases he is lined up on the right of the screen.

However, this year watch Jackson blow by McCourty in a press man situation (He is lined up in the near side slot):

It seems to me that McCourty has just regressed in these situations. He is lacking the certain physicality that is present in good corners (or assault, in the case of Revis). He also looked faster last year.
First of all...Hello!!! My first post....Live in Wyoming but have been a LONG time PATS FAN from the Parcells' Days...anyway....
Since I only have my wife to bounce frustrations off of...and btw she is a hard-core PATS and Brady fan also...I just had to get on the forum officially and ask HOW LONG McCourty will continue to play???? Just watching the game you can see he is out of position, gets beat, doesn't look for the ball, and is constantly missing tackles....He cost the PATS at least 14 points today....It seems Belichick has benched and even released many players in the past for much less egregious play....I have to question the coaches decision to continue to start him.....
MCCOURTY MUST GO!!!
There...I said it (to someone other than my wife), and feel much better.
Wow, still hot under the collar even though it's 5 below here and snowing!!!
Calm down.
Then again, if I lived in Wyoming, I'd probably be mad at the world too.
Ha... Nope, not mad at anything but watching watching McCourty consistently get torched...the entire year!!!!
Lockout and the lack of OTAs.
How do you explain Gronk, Aaron, and Spikes (when he's out there). Hell, Dane Fletcher looked much improved when he was out there running around compared to last year.
Philip Adams outplayed McCourty this year until he got cut. Molden has played just as well too. Those are guys off of the street. I'm not writing off McCourty at all. But, he's been god-awful this year. And, to describe his play any other way is disingenuous.
Why is he still a starter? Make him earn it. Sick of seeing him get toasted.
Because, shockingly, he's the best CB on the roster?
