And Now There Are Five

There is no way I trade Judon for a 6th or 7th round pick. If someone wants to trade for him then it’s going to take a 3rd at a minimum. He’s their best defensive player, you don’t give him away for nothing.
Agree. He's incredibly valuable to a contending team which needs pass rush help to get over the hump.

To the NEP who are rebuilding and not interested in paying 32 year old players expensive, long term deals not so much...

They probably haven't extended those guys because 3-4 of them won't be here next year.
Peppers is the one "must have" to re-sign. Still young, great leader, and growing impact player.

Sorry to say, but Judon & Jones are certainly playing their last year with the Pats.
Both 31 - and potentially both diminishing returns compared to big $$ it'll take to keep them.
Wise could be gone. Seems his role will greatly decrease with White & Jennings improving.
Either way, we'll need to sign and/or draft a solid DE next year.
Godchaux is also on the bubble. Watts is here, but Davon could stay for cheap for another year or two if we need depth.

Except it is unclear who gets credit for the offense in Cleveland, AVP did not call plays. Stefanski did.
The feedback from those that have worked with AVP seem to indicate he's pretty good but he has to prove it. As much as he says he can adapt to his players, he also seems stuck on his one scheme which may not line up with the type of talent they have. Overall, An unknown.

Also, can you lose one of the greatest defensive coaching minds in NFL history and not have a drop off on defense? With the coaching continuity and BB kind of falling off the last couple years I think they can be fine but still a question mark.
Is Mayo over his head? Is he a good head coach? Things look hopeful but, again, an unknown.

There is just no proven history here for any of the coaches, AVP calling plays: Unknown, Covington as DC: Unknown, Mayo as a HC: Unknown.
I do know... that play calling is a choice whether the HC does it, QBs coach OC ect. However depending upon how an organization structures thier staff is usually what determines who gets credited. However AVP was still a coach on the staff.. AVPs been around.. Buffalo, Greenway as well. The guy knows offense. On the scheme that's what an OC does.. Josh had his and took it to Denver, LV.. pretty much the patriots offense so to speak.. Shanahan took his to SF, when he left ATL.. what I like that AVP said is he's not trying to force square pegs into round holes.. he's utilizing his players strengths to the best of thier abilities to cover up potential weaknesses. AVP is proven just not in NE, on the defensive side.. coving had been a coach in the defense 8 seasons, he is keeping the same defensive principles.. that Bill instilled and that Mayo and SB ran. All HCs experienced and inexperienced like mayo will have to adapt, and make changes and fix errors as the season goes on. Overall I'm optimistic I feel really good about maye and what he can be for this team.

I agree on the price for other teams, but I also think his leadership is very valuable to the Patriots.

We are upwards of $100 million in cap space in 2025 with few impending free agents left to sign. The roster is full of young OL and WR who will get extended auditions, so I expect our free agency activity at both positions will be minimal. We will have a top 10 pick, possibly top 5, and likely two in the top 40. Flexibility and capital are plentiful.

So why not extend Judon? I don't see that paying him market value through 2026 or so will have any negative impact to bring in the reinforcements necessary to compete while Maye is on his rookie deal. Letting Judon walk will also elevate our need to draft a pass rusher high in 2025, thus potentially limiting our options at other spots.

If we were tighter against the cap, I would understand the logic of moving on. As it stands today, extending him seems like a shrewd football move.

I agree I think he's more valuable to us as a leader and just to keep the D as strong as possible rather than just getting a 4 in return.

I'd consider a 3rd but not even sure that's enough.

Maybe he proves to be healthy and is on pace for another high double digit sack season and some team does something dumb but other than that I keep him and even consider resigning him in the off-season.

I agree. I would rather see them pay him. And I wouldn’t take anything less than a 3rd for him.

MY GUESS is that Wise and Peppers are most likely next, although we might be done until next off-season.

Did anyone think that Wolf would re-sign or extend all 13 key players who were free agents this year or next? Wolf has done an amazing job
Having a dozen players for next year (5 key players left from this year and 6 who we signed for one year. This is NOT a huge list for a team with over $100M in 2025 cap money.

We started with many key players to re-sign and several who would on their contract year in 2024. We figured to lose several of these players when they decided to move on to better opportunities.
ONWENU
HENRY
STEVENSON
BOURNE
DUGGER
BARMORE
JENNINGS
TAVAI

PEPPERS
JUDON
JONES
GODCHAUX
WISE
=======
We replaced Wilson with Takitaki and Zeke with Gibson.
We signed some one-year players: Brissett, Okorafor, Osborn, Watts, Uche and Hawkins)

Don't know why the New boss would be in such a hurry to extend Jalopy and re-sign DawgHouse & Uncle Dugg without a plan to extend (or at least give a wee bump to) Judon & Peppers (aka their Best defensive players)...

Time to trade Judon now then. However, his market is slim due to the type of player he is. I see Pittsburgh, Baltimore and LA Rams as the only suitors.
The guy who open things up for players like Josh Uche we need Judon... Uche was nothing without him.

You can ASSUME that there is no plan regarding Judon and Peppers.

Maybe the players will agree, maybe not. That doesn't mean that there is no plan. Almost certainly, there is a plan.

I guess I am stuck on your term "market value"
is his market value top 3 edge rusher in the league for 3-4 years? or does that put you in paying for past performance and not future potential performance?
I assume the conversation would be a lot different if Judon was 28 and not 32.
